Great to see you again Greg! I do have a question about the point of interruption in Scenario 3 (team B incorrectly granted a timeout when team A's legal throw-in was bouncing in the backcourt untouched). You say the throw-in has not ended yet because the ball was not legally touched by a player inbounds (which makes sense), and therefore, the POI throw-in spot will be where the original throw-in was. However, Rule 4-36-2b says "Play shall be resumed by...(a) a throw-in to the team that was in control at an out-of-bounds spot NEAREST TO WHERE THE BALL WAS LOCATED when the interruption occurred." So, wouldn't the correct POI throw-in spot be nearest to where the ball was when the the timeout was granted?

Hi Jeff! I can see the logic in your statement. I think there is a small opening in the rule as written where the assumption is that normal on the court play is interrupted.
Next clause "A free throw or a throw-in when the interruption occurred during this activity or if a team is entitled to such." implies, but doesn't give us the full answer either.
In the end, I think this is up for interpretation and the throw-in not ending supersedes.

@@BetterOfficials As usual, you have a great holistic perspective of the rules and prove to be correct yet again, which is why you are, indeed, the NFHS BASKETBALL RULES EXPERT! Thanks Greg, and Happy New Year!

I can't tell you how much I appreciate finding quality material for free. I think a big issue with reffing basketball outside of parents is that not enough older and more experienced referees are trying to help younger ones. Older basketball players help younger basketball players. Older coaches help teach younger coaches. But basketball refereeing has little guidance. (At least it's the case by me)

scenario 1 ,,,no free throws...but counts towards team fouls....correct? I see this play happening a ton in lower levels of basketball....loose ball, bodies everywhere

NFHS makes it simple: ALL fouls count towards team foul count!
