- After a long, slow day, making anywhere from zero to 3 knots... A wall of air slams us on the port quarter. In an instant, Sophia heels to starboard as she gently lowers her bow. The sound of water lapping against the hull grows louder as she continues to gain speed at a shocking pace. Our only option? Dig in, Hold on, and do our best to stay on course. Previously secure items begin to fly around the cabin as I hear my wife call out "5.7 !!!" a few seconds later "SIX !!!"
As quickly as it had come, it was gone... This video is lake sailing in a nutshell. Hours of slow, relaxing, peaceful, sailing with a few moments of white knuckle terror dispersed throughout.
SV Sophia is a 1990 Catalina 22 with a fixed, wing keel also known as a shoal keel.

Very cool. Thanks. I have a Catalina 25 and sometimes that happens when a rain storm is approaching. Fun times except when the rain storm actually catches me instead if verring off like I was so sure it would do.
Yeah, It caught us that day. We had to de-rig and load the boat on the trailer between the squalls.

Love your channel. We are from South Africa and we would love to have a Catalina 22 but you dont get them here. The copy of the Catalina over here is the Jaguar 22 but it doesnt have the pop up roof..

I don't use the pop top as much as I thought I would. It's really heavy and awkward to open and close.
