I really don't understand why people don't like Dove here. Amanda Seyfried will always be my favorite Sophie but Dove sings this very well from a technical standpoint. She has very healthily placed belts and low notes. Her vibrato is really clear and easy. I think the reason for her making her voice a bit deeper is because she's imitating her mom. Donna has a deeper voice than Sophie so it makes sense since Sophie is reading her diary and she can't possibly imagine what her mom sounded like when she was young, only how she sounds when she's older. Either way, I think Dove did great.

I also think going with that faux "soul" texture cold have just been character choice and I actually really love. im auditioning for Sophie and I'm combining both Dove and Amanda for inspiration to this song. Like you said she is very technically good singer. I saw some people hating on her for singing "lawny" but she has the correct mouth position for singing the vowel sound, but people who aren't vocalists don't know that

David Caballero they had only a few days to rehearse it and the bad quality of the video and the mics make the sound totally different. To be fair you really cannot judge the voices with this quality... The song is even slower in the video and I think all the voices are darker

Speaking technically, Dove is a little flat here and she sings extremely forward into her nose, and nasal resonance doesn’t carry over a band well at all. Which isn’t her fault, because for some reason modern voice teachers now say that singing into your nasal cavity resonates well, but all of the old most famous opera singers in the world (Caruso) were extremely against it. This is why you can’t hear any of the singers. Either way I still think she’s amazing and wonderfully talented, she’s not going to be perfect, no one is! People are so hard on her as if they could do better.

OK I know Dove Cameron is supposed to look perfect in every moment but if you watch mamma mia original version you'll notice Amanda's character looks more natural even I think she isn't wearing make up so Dove could forget about all the make up and false lashes come on honey you are beautiful and perfect. I mean, obviously you need SOME makeup, but they should have picked a lighter shade of lipstick, maybe a little less eyeshadow, instead of falsies maybe just some mascara, etc. I know it’s still not THAT natural, but makeup is necessary for a good on-stage performance. Maybe just a little less + more neutral colours.
Stage makeup will always look extreme when you have a camera close up. Live performance isn't about how well it photographs, and dramatic colors are what translate to an audience sitting 20-70 feet away from you.
Luisiana Villegas you have to wear stage makeup when performing to be able to show more expressions in your face. The “original” isnt the movie. The movie came AFTER the on stage version back in 2000. Amanda didnt originate the role.

Much better singer than I thought from watching her Disney stuff. She has a much bigger range and is a more expressive actor in this. Yes to people who like the original I get it. But she did great. the movie and the actual on stage musical have very different feels to them and i prefer the movie with amanda seyfried as sophie so i was definitely expecting this to be a little different than what i’m used to
I love Amanda as Sophie as well however Dove also did an amazing job. Plus you can not compare a movie to a live production. In movies they lip sing to a prerecorded sound track and well live is live they have to sing and dance without sounding out of breath.

Honeys I don’t see I problem with this what so ever, I think the problem is ppl are not giving this actress a fair chance bc Amanda did such a great job but this doesn’t make her performance bad just not the same as Amanda’s and that’s okay on the other hand she is not “loud” enough for stage and yes you can make her mic louder but still that’s the only problem I see. so many people hating on dove, but I honestly thing she did so good in this production. I loved Amanda, but I don’t have a favorite. Honestly they are both so wonderful as Sophie. I think dove played it wonderfully, and I think Amanda was amazing as Sophie.

OK I know Dove Cameron is supposed to look perfect in every moment but if you watch mamma mia original version you'll notice Amanda's character looks more natural even I think she isn't wearing make up so Dove could forget about all the make up and false lashes come on honey you are beautiful and perfect. By the way good interpretation and her voice is like an angel's.

I totally get where ur coming from but if she wasn't wearing makeup the lights and size of the stage would wash her out and the people who r sitting in the back wouldn't see the features of her face. I do musical theatre and we always pack on the makeup or u can't rlly see the faces of the actors
I agree. I mean, obviously you need SOME makeup, but they should have picked a lighter shade of lipstick, maybe a little less eyeshadow, instead of falsies maybe just some mascara, etc. I know it’s still not THAT natural, but makeup is necessary for a good on-stage performance. Maybe just a little less + more neutral colours.
Stage makeup will always look extreme when you have a camera close up. Live performance isn't about how well it photographs, and dramatic colors are what translate to an audience sitting 20-70 feet away from you.
Luisiana Villegas you have to wear stage makeup when performing to be able to show more expressions in your face. The “original” isnt the movie. The movie came AFTER the on stage version back in 2000. Amanda didnt originate the role.
oh honey i definitely like the original better than this version but theres no way im gonna agree with this. Its a stage production, she kinda has to wear heavier makeup. Hate to brake it to you, but amanda was wearing makeup too (it was just way lighter).

the movie and the actual on stage musical have very different feels to them and i prefer the movie with amanda seyfried as sophie so i was definitely expecting this to be a little different than what i’m used to

Nice vocals, but the choreography was lack luster and the scene was slow. This was probably a 4 hour show with the pace they were going.

I love Amanda as Sophie as well however Dove also did an amazing job. Plus you can not compare a movie to a live production. In movies they lip sing to a prerecorded sound track and well live is live they have to sing and dance without sounding out of breath.

Dove is amazing in this! And if she was pregnant in the musical omg that would be so cool to watch! I love her so much and she is my fave celeb, but lots of people are hating on her because she is trying to sing slightly lower. Her voice is naturally pretty high, like mine, but she is just trying to sing the part like it is supposed to be sung. The directors would not have chosen her if she were horrible in the first place. And she wouldn't have received a Daytime Emmy Award either in April of 2018. Everybody leave her alone. Unless you have done this exact musical and were given the same lines, dance moves and songs, then you should NOT be comparing her to Amanda and certainly not judging this beauty. She is an amazing actress and I don't care what people say negatively about her otherwise. Just face it, she's amazing.

Honeys I don’t see I problem with this what so ever, I think the problem is ppl are not giving this actress a fair chance bc Amanda did such a great job but this doesn’t make her performance bad just not the same as Amanda’s and that’s okay on the other hand she is not “loud” enough for stage and yes you can make her mic louder but still that’s the only problem I see.
Her portrayal of Sophie is very convincing and all do I wish it had more to it, the Hollywood bowl is huge and there’s screens everywhere so she “didn’t need” to do much to emote anything cause ppl were seeing her regardless.
So just quit trying to point out flaws and or mistakes still cause Karen, your high school doesn’t even have proper ppl doing it.
