    Dodge 2012 Grand Caravan, single monitor. Sound from the VES did flow through speakers, but the monitor did not display the video. I found this youtube video, and ordered the single unit from Doug's eBay page. Almost immediately upon ordering from eBay, my part was in the mail for delivery. Arrived a few days early via USPS. Installed today following the instructions provided in this video. Another satisfied customer, thank you Doug!!!

    I can't thank you enough. I had traveled from FL to MI with my 4 yo son. While there, the video stopped working. While looking for possible reasons online I came up with this. I ordered the part, borrowed my dad's garage for an hour or so, and had it working again. It made the drive back to FL so much easier. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

    Just finished the job with success! My son had smacked his head pretty good into the 3rd row monitor which caused it to go blank. The second row monitor worked fine. So I followed the instructions and replaced the cable on the 3rd row monitor only and it worked like a charm. I am not a handyman so it took me a good 2 hours to do the job. When you get to the part where you have to pull the entire overhead panel down, you will have to use a lot of force, it will feel like it is going to break and then it will pop off and come down. I recommend one person on each side pulling down from side to side (short width). My other tip is remember how you disassemble the thing apart because there are no instructions to put it back together other than reversing all the steps you took in the video. Good Luck! You can do it too!

    Another satisfied customer! We fixed our 2009 Rotan today. One note - the 2009 has one long console along the roof, so just pop off the front and back covers (with lights) and proceed with unscrewing and unplugging per the video. Also your ribbon was exactly the part needed.

    I don't think you realize how amazing this is that you would share this with others. This has saved us a fortune, and I am completely grateful in every sense of the word for your help! Completely shocked when it actually worked, and my kids (but more importantly mom) are thrilled to have their DVD player back again... day trips will be much more enjoyable again!

    Doug, A BIG THANK YOU for posting this info! I ordered the cable and followed your video instructions to do the repair myself. As soon as I opened the monitor housing, I immediately saw the cable was cracked. Replaced it and the system is working like new. Easy repair that took only 45 minutes and saved me TONS of money.

    Thanks Doug! That thin flat little cable was the cause. Very, very valuable information you are providing, and very much a money saver. It's a waste that dealers will typically only want to have you buy a whole new system, when, if this is tried it saves a lot of money for the consumer, and builds trust that the dealer knows their product.
    Glad you had the interest to post this two years ago, thanks for your service!

    Not only was this the exact problem I had and the exact fix, but Doug also had the part for me on eBay (extremely hard to find anywhere else). Went to pick it up in person since it was close by, and Doug was extremely helpful. Don't let a dealership sucker you into spending $800+ on a new TV, do what Doug says carefully and fix it yourself for $25. Thanks Doug!

    Great video. For the 2008 Grand Caravan you need an 8 mm socket instead of a 7mm. Easily figured out the appropriate steps on my vehicle following the methodology of this video. Had my 10 year old help me lift it back into place

    Wow, I am so thankful for this video. I was able to fix our 2009 routan in about 2 hours. I spent 20 on this part and bought a 20 dollar wrench set (for the 7 and 10mm wrenches). My husband was so proud. Can't thank you enough for sharing!!

    Great tutorial!! I have a 2011 VW Routan SE, basically a Chrysler T&C with only one VES screen, but it stopped working a few months back. Came across this video, bought the 32-pin cable, followed the instructions and BAM, we have video again!! Definitely worth the time and minor frustration with disassembly and reassembly to not have to spend I don't know how much money to take to the dealer, etc... And I managed not to break a single thing! Thanks!!

    This video is worth about $1000.00 to owners of these systems. I just did mine and fixed the problem. Be careful with the panel clips, they are hard to separate from the ceiling and the ones when separating the monitor. Thank you for posting this repair!!!

      Douglas Bollenbach Hi Douglas I am in the process of doing the repair and I am at the part where you need to pull down the console. Did you have any trouble pulling it down? I am bit scared I am going to break it when I pull it down since it seems like you have to put a lot of force to pull it down. Any tips on where to pull down and how much force you had to use would be greatly appreciated it. Thanks!

      No problem Matt, I just answered your question in another spot but to get it down just pull, it is easier if you have two people so they can help catch it if it comes down too fast. Grab the console but don't grab the plastic tubes used for console lighting.

    I am so happy I found this video. My wife and I bought a 2010 Routan with the expectation that the VES worked. Well, after finding out it did not and they could not fix it, they said we had to take it to VW and we have to pay them to fix it. A simple ribbon cable should not cost 1500, which is the low end the quoted us. Thank you very much for this, you are saving a family with 6 children a lot of money and for that I thank you again.

    Just got both ribbon cables off eBay and pulled down the entire 2 DVD roof console from my wife's 2013 Town and Country. The 3rd row ribbon looked fine but replaced anyways. The second row ribbon had a defined crack in it. This fixed my problem of a blank 2nd row and a split screen 3rd row. (Sometimes the 3rd row would work and a blank 2nd row but after opening the 2nd row a few more times I guess that finally killed the ribbon) Thanks so much for the video. Only real difference from this was since ours was the whole one big console there are four plastic ceiling connectors you have to pry from roof after all the bolts are removed.

      Good call on replacing both, the original cables seem to harden with age. I recommend replacing them both when the console is down. Glad to hear it worked well for you and thanks for the feedback on the plastic fasteners.

    This worked great in my 2010 Town and Country. The only thing that I would add is that there is a center screw in the dvd unit hidden under the part number sticker. My index finger would have appreciated that, since I sliced it trying to gently pry apart the dvd unit.

    Called a dealer to see if they would replace the ribbon cables but they wouldn't. They want the $800 dollars for a whole new module. Got your kit and it worked great. I only changed the front cable and it seemed to fix the problem with the front and rear screen. Not a bad deal for $32 and I have a spare cable. Mine was in a 2010 Routan

    The loose connection is a crack in the ribbon cable. The only way to fix it is to replace the ribbon cable. Usually the screen with the most use goes out first, does your third row get the most use? Check your second row screen also, it is easier to do them both at the same time if they're both showing signs of cracking. Hope this answered your question.

    Unbelievable, I had quotes from the dealership of 1200 to fix. The instructional video is great. I just sat in the van with my tools, and the video on my phone. It took me about an hour to complete for the 2009 town and country. Some of the installation is a little bit different from the video. I have a dual ves and you have to take to the whole piece (both 2nd and 3rd row screen) down from the headliner. If you have a dual ves system replace both ribbon cables at the same time. I did not and am now ordering another cable. It shipped real fast.

    Yes, replace 3rd row monitor ribbon cable. You can check the ribbon cables by playing a DVD and moving screens back and forth. If they flicker, replace both at same time.

  • @dougpittman2332
    @dougpittman2332  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    There are two fuses for the audio system, I don't remember which ones right now, check those first. Look in the owners manual for locations. Also, sometimes you can tell the problem is the ribbon cable by swinging the monitor back and forth while "on" and look for the screens flickering. If your VES system is a 2008 or 2009 it is time to replace the ribbon cables. I have also recently changed the cables on a 2010 model Grand Caravan, so these cables are all starting to crack and fail.

    Great video, my 2008 Jeep Commander is considerably different in the takeapart steps, but where it is different, it's actually simpler and easier. Once a got the screen & hinge away from the base, I could plainly see the cable, frayed and broken from several years of folding the screen up and down. Putting it all back together was much easier than taking it apart, and it worked first try! If there is a downside to this, I expect that with use, as it is folded up and down more, and with age, as the plastic becomes dry and brittle, that the same problem will happen again. But in my case, it did take 8 years, so I think this new cable should be good for at least another 8. :)

    I replaced the 3rd row cable about 6 wks ago because it wouldn't power on. The screen powered on after replacement, but wouldn't display video from either DVD player. The setup screen displayed correctly, but during DVD videos the screen was powered, but blank (backlit). i ordered another cable last week after the 2nd row monitor quit, and caused the entire VES system to quit. Today i replaced the 2nd row cable, it had completely disconnected, but t was in too poor condition to simply re-install. After replacing the 2nd row, i experienced the same malfunction that I was having in the 3rd row(powered blank screen/setup working). So i re-opened just the monitor backing with power on, touched the newly installed ribbon cable, and to my surprise, it started displaying video! So I re-seated the ZIF connector, and now it works perfectly. I then did the same thing to the 3rd row, now both are displaying perfect video!
    Bottom line, if it didn't work, try it again!

    • @dougpittman2332
      @dougpittman2332  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Matthew Isley Good job! Thanks for posting up your solution. You almost need three hands with the ZIF connector. One to hold the cable straight and fully inserted, and two more to close the latches completely.

    Doug I just watched the video after reading a little on the Chrysler forums great job! My T&C doesn't have VES and only a single second row monitor driven by the 730n/RHR DVD player, it powers on but I get no video, I can use the menu on the monitor to chose the source but nothing plays. do you think this could be caused by the same ribbon cable?

    • @dougpittman2332
      @dougpittman2332  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +curtis Latner Yes, when the cable breaks the symptoms can be varied because the ribbon has 34 pins or "wires". Depending on which pins break it will cause all kinds of strange behavior in the video system.

    Great Video. Symptoms the same. Before swapping the 2 screen ribbon cables I checked the continuity with my DMM and all were good??? After swapping, neither screen turns on. both open switches changed state when manually actuating when unit was apart. Both ribbon calbes did seem to have a defined crease/pinch point and the ribbon wires/traces did look funny at the edges but I metered no breaks. Odd right? Going to order 2 cables and see. ALSO ODD, my problem started after battery went dead when I left it on to download music via USB connector.

    That front plug for the dome light can be a bear. Just pull down the front cover and let it hang by the dome light harness, turn it a little to reach each screw. On the long consoles there are still just four screws, two at the front under dome light (one Phillips head and one 10mm) and two at the back under rear snap in panel (one Phillips head and one 10mm). Hope that helped.

    I haven't had a problem with the in-dash screen before. Pull your in-dash unit out and open it up, looking for poor connections and cracked ribbon cables. If you're not comfortable with pulling out and possibly breaking your radio and monitor I would suggest locating a used replacement first, before taking on this project. Check your part number on the radio monitor and then look on Ebay or Car-part.com.

    I replaced 2 ribbon cables on a 2010 T&C with dual monitors. I had a friend help me and it took about an hour, and we can do it much faster now that we know what we're doing.
    However, 6 days later and we're having a problem. The front monitor comes on with the Chrysler logo and after that it goes black. The sound stays on in the van, which is just enough to appease our daughter. The back monitor works just fine.
    Thoughts?

    • @dougpittman2332
      @dougpittman2332  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +iBlackbook The usual area that gives the most trouble are the ZIF connectors.Verify that the cables are fully inserted, squarely, and that the latches on ZIF connectors are fully latched. They can be tricky and almost require three hands as the first side wants to open as you are latching second side, all while keeping the cable fully inserted.

    Models with the long console will have "push pins". There are 4 and are meant not to be reused. They are black plastic and the wings on the plastic will bend the first time you pull the console down. You may want to replace them while the console is down to keep as close to factory condition. Here is a link to some factory documentation as well: www.mopar-accessories.com/en-US/imagehandler.ashx?id=2226

    We have two DVD screens in our 2008 Chrysler Town & Country and the second row screen was black and the third row screen was split, but the third row screen would work when we started a movie. We replaced the ribbon in the second row screen, and instead of working it went from black to a split screen. Since it didn't work, we put the old ribbon back in (we wanted to return the ribbon to save money) but now the third row screen only works once in a while and second row screen is still black. Any ideas on what we could try? Do we need to replace both ribbons at the same time, and if so, why? Thanks for any thoughts and ideas!

    Hi there, I was able to make this fix myself, thank you so much. The only question I have left is how to programming the screens as they both shows 1 and 2 on both screens. the screen is now functioning but none of them is receiving the video image from the dvd. Now both screens are showing split screens but no signal. I do appreciate a lot your help!

      Check all connections first, large connector with lever and
      flat white connector at front of console, black white and orange connectors on
      screens, and the ZIF connectors. Verify the cable is oriented correctly, metal
      contacts of cable facing up, in ZIF connector and that it is inserted squarely.
      Usually the ZIF connectors are the issue.
      However, in about three percent of cases the 2nd
      row monitor is the problem and will have to be replaced. You can find a used
      screen on eBay or even easier, try car-part dot com or LKQ.
      Sincerely,
      Doug

      +Doug Pittman Thank you Doug, Just to make sure I have express myself correctly. After I finish all the process the second row screen is now functioning, before changing the ribbon it was not. It is on now, even dough based on your comments, the screen itself might be the issue ? I assuming it is fix now because it displays like is working fine. I do assume the ribbon was placed properly, or this characteristic it means it was not ? Before taking down the console down again I want just to make sure I am doing the right thing. Thanks again for helping out !!

      +Lorena Vargas First make sure the VES is ON in the radio. Go to menu and turn on screen 1 and screen 2 in the radio. If the screens still don't show source signal (movie) then the next step is checking all connections as described below.

They installed the white one and the monitor still is black... any ideas or do I just need to replace the whole thing. Its a 2015 Chrysler town and country. +john michaels I'm not sure which overhead console your Commander has. If it is the short one all you have to do is loosen the screws under the screen and the monitor drops right out, 30 seconds. If you have the longer console it may have to be removed to access monitor, look for removable pieces at the front and back of console, if they are removable there should be screws underneath to release overhead console from ceiling. Hope this helped.Check out the Jeep Commander Forum to see if someone has already done a removal and has posted specific instructions.

      On the single long console there is a plastic cover at the front and another at rear. Once these are removed you have access to the electrical connectors and the total of four 4 screws that must be removed. Once the screws are removed from front and back then move to middle and pull straight down.

    Question though.
    I just replaced both my ribbons (middle row monitor was black, back row had the split screen)
    Now back row works, but middle is still black. I tore it all apart and double checked connections, but same result.
    Do I have a bad monitor, or is there something else I should try?
    The middle row one gets the most use since we bought the can a couple years ago, if that is a factor

      First thing I do is turn on each monitor through the dash radio control, both “buttons” should no longer be gray and should function. If you checked all connections including the cable ZIF connectors, 34 pin cable is silver side up while 68 pin is silver side down, then it’s most likely the second row monitor. Check out car-part.com for best selection of used monitors. Hope this helped.

      Check all connections first, large connector with lever and flat white connector at front of console, black white and orange connectors on screens, and the ZIF connectors. Verify the cable is oriented correctly in ZIF connector and that it is inserted squarely.
      95% of the time the connectors are the issue, in about five percent of cases the monitor will have to be replaced. You can find a used screen on eBay or even better, car-part.com.

    (2010 Routan) Doug, thanks for keeping up on this forum. I pursued this last summer after months have having nothing for 8 months. However, when I finished, I did restore visual to the middle screen, but nothing piping through from the player... both screens now show the 1-2 split. I took it all apart and put it back together again, just to double check. And, obviously, I've now been putting it off and off to dig in again to figure out what is going on. Do you have any guidance on this before I spin my wheels for 10 hours when it is right under my nose?

      I'm sorry to hear that you are still having issues. If you have checked all connections including the ZIF connectors and you are sure that the cable was installed with the silver side up I'm not sure what the problem could be. Even if your 2nd row unit was fried, very rare, you would still see a change in the symptoms when the new cable was installed. You can return the cable if it has been less than 30 days, even though it is not resalable, and I will gladly refund your $21.

    This was a lifesaver. I have the 2nd and 3rd row screens in my 08 Grand Caravan. 2nd row display is working again! However, I think I forgot to reconnect something in the 3rd row because now it just displays the Dodge logo followed by a blank screen. Is there a setting that may have been accidentally switched that would cause the 3rd row display to be blank, or do I have to pop it open again and check my connections?

    • @dougpittman2332
      @dougpittman2332  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      First make sure to turn both monitors "on" using the head unit. Also, try shutting the head unit off and then back on. Sometimes after the new cables are installed the head unit has to "recognize" them. If that doesn't work, then yes, time to go back in and check all connections.

    • @newcreaturehobbies
      @newcreaturehobbies 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Doug Pittman are the monitors controlled in a setting menu? How do you turn the head unit off and on? I've looked for a way to power cycle the head unit, but it just switches over to clock mode.

    Hey Doug if the ribbon cable is bad does the front dash console also not work?

    • @dougpittman2332

      Because there are 34 pins, think of them as wires, in the 08-12 cables and 68 pins in the 2013 and newer cables, depending on where the crack occurs the symptoms can be varied. I have heard of vans that have crazy electrical issues, windshield wipers and dash lights flickering, because of a crack in the VES cable.

      Stewart Moreland Correct. There are only four screws, two in the front and two in the back. In the middle are plastic "push pins" that hold the console up as it gets screwed in on the assembly line. Just pull straight down to release the pins.

I have all the screws out but unable to pry it off. Do I need to take the entire top console out or is there a trick to pop out the screen in order to fix with the cable? +Nicole Delphous The long console has four screws total that hold it to the ceiling. At the front of the console is a plastic cover that must be removed to reach the front two screws, one Philips head and one 10mm socket head.At the rear of the long console is another cover, contains two map lights, that must be removed to gain access to rear two screws, one Philips head and one 10mm socket heat.Once those four screws are out the only thing holding the console to the ceiling are plastic clips, move to middle of console and pull straight down. A second person makes this step easier but is not necessary.Hope this helps.

      +Doug Pittman Thanks Doug. Was able to get it down :) Went through all the steps and just put everything back into place and hooked back up the battery to find that the 3rd row screen now plays but the 2nd is blank. Before taking everything back down, do you have a trouble shooting guide that I could try? I'm thinking that I must have put the ribbon back in correctly if the 3rd row is working?
      I did take it back down and realized that the 2nd monitor ribbon wasn't connected. Reconnected it and put it back up and still nothing on the 2nd screen. Again, the 3rd row monitor is working :)
      I even went through to check on the drivers screen and it shows the 1st monitor as ON. I'm wondering if the monitor screen might be shot? Hmmm.......well at least the 3rd row one works.

      +Chris Klappe Firstly, verify you have power by checking the 2nd row 12v outlet, the one next to driver side 2nd row seat, by plugging in an accessory such as phone charger. This 12v power outlet is on same circuit as video monitors.Next, if you have verified that you have power and the monitors are still not coming on then it is time to find a used monitor. Here are the instructions for that:I go to Car-Part.com, it is a database of all the salvage yards in North America, and put in year make model then select "tv" from part drop down menu. It will ask you 2nd or 3rd row. Sort by distance and find one local for a good price, usually $150-$300.

    • @dougpittman2332
      @dougpittman2332  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      JR Larkin All you can do is double check all connections including the cable and ZIF connectors. Usually the ZIF connector is where people have an issue. Cable goes in silver side up and make sure the cable is seated in the ZIF connector fully and squarely. You can also try disconnecting the battery if you haven't already, as sometimes the radio needs to be reset to recognize the dvd player again.Also check the 12 volt power outlet next to drivers side sliding door, also has hookups for audio and video cables. If you have power there then the fuse is still good, if no power there then replace fuse, under hood, and try again.
