  • Hi guys , sharing you another video. This time i had a small issue with this Mazda CX 5 Skyactiv that is a small leak from the Oil Control Valve / VVT Solenoid area.
The car has done 42.000kms and it is 2013 Gen 1 Mazda CX 5.
I had to replace the gasket in order to fix the issue. Hope you guys find this useful . Please Enjoy the video.
    NOTE :
Valve cover bolt torque specs are 7Nm.
Please use some RTV sealant on the new gasket (oil control valve) . As it is prone to leak again after 1 - 2 months of use.

Great video. A few things to mention:
    1. The VVT gasket should be put on dry. Do not lubricate it (I noticed you put oil on the outside and inside of the gasket). Oil on a gasket will create a passageway for a leak. As noted, you may want to put some RTV on the top of the inside of the VVT gasket where it fits over the solenoid itself and the outside of the gasket where it fits through the valve cover. However, this is not necessary as it isn't noted in the mazda workshop manual. Other manufacturers with a similar design recommend this.
    2. Make sure the VVT solenoid is thoroughly cleaned (use brake cleaner and a rag) to remove any oil.
    3. Make sure the channel (on the cover) where the valve cover gasket fits into is cleaned. Spraying brake cleaner and running a rag through works. Again, any oil, debris etc is a passageway for a leak.
    4. No need to hammer in the VVT gasket. I've seen this in other videos as well. The gasket fits in with minimal effort. To note, on some older mazdas with a different gasket design, it was necessary to hammer in as the fit was much tighter.
    5. Ensure follow correct valve cover bolt torque sequencing as per mazda workshop manual. In addition, it is recommended you do two passes with a torque wrench. Often you'll find on the second pass the bolts that were tightened first are now loose.
    6. The most common RTVs out there are manufactured by permatex. Permatex instructs that the final torque of bolts be done one hour after the valve cover is replaced (bolts to be torqued finger tight only initially). Before restarting vehicle RTV should cure for 24 hours. Of course, this may vary with other manufacturers.
    7. I noticed another comment about using anaerobic gasket maker. This issue with this is it can not withstand high temps and the high vibration of an engine. In addition, I believe they have minimal oil resistance (permatex for example indicates it is not recommended for valve covers or oil pans). As a result, it will probably fail. Both black and grey RTVs are suitable for valve cover gaskets. Grey is preferred as it is more rigid on cure (and recommended by mazda).
    8. The question is often asked if the VVT gasket and valve cover gasket should be replaced at the same time even if one of them isn't leaking. The answer is yes. They become harder and less flexible over time. Even if one is not leaking now, once the valve cover is removed, it will probably end up leaking as the gasket that is not replaced may no longer be able to create a proper seal.
    10. When cleaning the engine block where the valve cover gasket sits, use a plastic razor blade. A set with a handle can be found for cheap on amazon. The plastic won't scratch aluminum.

Great video, but there is one correction I'd like to suggest! I just did this repair myself, and there's actually 15 bolts holding down the valve cover, you site several times that there's 14 which is incorrect. I spent about 45 minutes wrestling with the valve cover before realizing that there was one more bolt to take off.

Great video. Gave me a nice visual guide of what to expect as I replaced the gasket and OCV seal on my '14 6 2.5L NA. It has 180,000 miles (~290,000km) and was leaking at the back LH corner. Few comments on what I learned along the way:
    1) There are two flanges on the RH side of the cover that you can get your fingers under and pry it up with. The cover was stuck on pretty good at my car's age and mileage. Then lift up and off the OCV as you show in your video. You just have to manipulate that wire harness as you work.
    2) There are fifteen (15) 10mm bolts securing the valve cover, all are exactly the same length/style.
    3) The factory manual recommends a certain tightening sequence for the valve cover bolts. Basically they want you to start in the middle and work your way out. You did yours in a star pattern which is probably fine, just an fyi.
    4) Initially I didn't consider how long the RTV silicone takes to fully cure. The Permatex stuff I used said 1hr to tacky and 24hrs to fully cured.
    5) Probably good to do an oil change after this work as dirt, crud and maybe some of the old sealant scraped off can easily fall into the engine.
