I'm so glad that a female autistic TH-camr is talking about this and I hope we can begin the wave of discussing this film through an autistic female perspective. I'm a film critic working on my own review at the moment and it struck me that autistic female sexuality is something that fiction almost never explores. As @awizenwoman mentioned, it's not exactly called autism in the film, but I think there's definite case to be made here. Thanks so much for making this video!

We need to argue for actual autistic characters to be shown in film.

It cuts down the idea that if you meet an autistic person, you have met one autistic person.
Not all autistic people are about social justice.
People who don’t have the ability to speak aren’t. Or maybe they are. We don’t know.
I think it’s great that Taylor has this platform, but she needs to be careful not to amalgamate all autistic people into all acting and thinking the same way.
Every autistic person is different.

If it helps, I don't think the video was trying to equate having a child's mind to being autistic, but more trying to say that parts of bella's experience mirror the female autistic experience in less literal ways and more emotional ways. Like questioning social norms instead of accepting unquestioningly, etc. Hope this helps.
She wasn't autistic, she was someone with a brain transplant.
I felt the exact same watching this movie!! I instantly identified with Bella and everything she said and did felt so… right. What I love the most about this film is that it deals with naivete and idealism in a way that doesn’t mock it as so much media does, but rather portrays it as the correct attitude to have and condemns the people/society that take advantage of it or try to squash it. I’ve never seen a piece of media before that was not only sympathetic to a different way of understanding the world, but affirmative of it. It just filled my heart.

I agree completely. As a late diagnosed high masking autistic woman, this film mirrors entirely my experience of my sexuality. From a teenager discovering masturbation to happy ‘furious jumping’ with lots of partners, all the way to experiencing the bewildering tongue lashings from men who couldn’t understand my desire for sexual autonomy. I am now settled and happily married whilst in postgraduate education and I feel a deep affinity for the character of Bella Baxter. This film will be considered a future classic.
It's odd that so many films etc, portray autistic people but never call them autistic or as Aspies.
I'm beginning to suspect that a much higher than baseline percentage of people in the film industry are undiagnosed autistic. Which is weird, because I have a lot of beef with how the film industry works and what it stands for that comes from values I have that are intensified by my autism, so I've tended to think of it as a more neurotypical space.
@@JonBrase Performing arts and the arts in general are, from my experience, an extremely neurodivergent space. My suspicion is that they appeal to neurodivergent people because of the way we spend our entire lives having to learn to communicate with a different neurotype to our own, which I think prompts us to become very creative in communication - and art is communication. I actually did work as an actor and stunt performer for a short time, and without a doubt, my coworkers, for the most part, came across as an incredibly neurodiverse group.
I think it's partly because autistic people have existed for millenia, but we never had a term for it. In retrospect these characters are seemingly obviously autistic, but that's because we understand better now.
@@spyroninja This is very true! There are plenty of real-life people(for example, Michael Jackson) and fictional people(for example, Adrian Monk and Ambrose Monk) from the past who would have gotten an autism diagnosis if they grew up in the '90s or later.
Totally. Even though I don't think it applies to this character specifically, but definitely something that happens - will never forget the first couple of the Hannibal series episodes and the whole discourse was pretty much 'outing' will as an autistic guy but... it just stayed there, it was never developed in any way and yet so many autistic people identify with him too. It's been a struggle really

It felt sort of strange to watch my, like, EXACT way of experiencing the world as an adult autistic person being portrayed through a lens of young mental age in particular, but I'm not sure enough of the ins and outs of that feeling to be able to explain exactly why. I left the theater wondering how the other movie goers felt about Bella as a character because however they feel about her is exactly how they would feel about me. Every word she said, thing she expressed/way that she expressed it, want/need/dream she had, and action she took made so much sense to me. I spend every day grappling with the same things she grappled with.

I was just thinking about what you called "injustice" earlier today.
I've only suspected I was on the Spectrum for the last few years (I'll be 60 this year), so I'm still going through a review of all my life experiences.
As for this topic of "justice/ injustice," my thoughts now are based more on the fact that, in order to survive in this world, I had to literally "live-by-the- rules" (the golden rule, manners, fairness, etc) in order to fit it and be a part of society.
It's only now, in retrospect, that I've realized that the pain and disappointment I've experienced has come from never realizing that I was the only one following those damn rules.
And, now, having to come to terms with the fact that I had no "rules" to deal with others infractions, so I learned to simply walk away so I wouldn't be hurt by them again.
It's not an ideal situation, but now as a "hermit," I'm working to try and understand the experiences in my life from the perspective of woman who lived a lifetime in a world that never really existed.
I hope the insight we all gain will one day help others navigate more successfully through their futures.
Keep up the good work and thanks for opening up a space for us to share our experiences.

@@CC-xn5xi I am a 63-year-old male who just recently discovered that I am autistic. I went to a Bible College and found out that Christians didn't even live by those rules. Coming to a new understanding of my life experiences is good and hard, so many things I would rather not remember again are coming back with new meanings.

Participating in that has been something to look forward to. Some of my favorite creators are in it! I can try to link it if anyone’s interested.
I was taught to “live by the rules” too, but mostly rules about what NOT to do. Don’t act that way, stop being annoying, etc. I was rarely ever told the positive rules, like you have to put yourself first, and to make an omelet you have to break some eggs. So much so that I mislearned that telephoning someone was inherently interrupting them rudely.
I guess I was taught to make life as easy as possible for my caretakers (esp. parents) while making my life as inconspicuous a possible for myself.
Yes!! I saw this movie and vibes so hard with Bella. Polite Society is often illogical and Bella is a symbol of individual freedom. She took true ownership over her autonomy. So inspiring!

I watched this movie yesterday, and I was so sad, because people in the theater were laughing at her actions, and I was completely understanding the reasoning behind why she did the things she did.
That is exactly what I thought. It felt like they were laughing at me, because I'm Bella.
i saw it before i was diagnosed, i was also laughing but i think it was with her, like yeah why are things like that?? while i now understand that a lot of people were laughing at her
The naivete aspect certainly hits home: I'm deeply intellectually commited to the Christian doctrine of original sin, but my instinct is still always to assume the best of people (though just believing in original sin may be part of that too; correctly understood, it helps you see others' faults in light of your own, which helps humanize difficult people).
Have you seen the movie Stranger Than Fiction? It also featured a protagonist who is very clearly high-functioning autistic/Asperger's but it's never mentioned outside of him having a savant skill. It's an absolutely beautiful movie and I highly recommend it. Will Ferrell proves that he is actually a great dramatic actor in addition to a comic.
I ADORED that movie. Well before I knew I was autistic.
LOVE stranger than fiction
All Yorgos Lanthimos films explore language, cognition and societal norms. So, I would recommend watching all of them. Poor Things is the one that gets more specific about neuro divergence and a unique protagonist. I agree with what you said and one doesn’t have to be female to relate to Bella :)
thanks for this. I just discovered your channel . I was diagnosed in adulthood and watched the movie yesterday and I'm glad I found so many of us loving Bella. I agree with all your observations, and also
- When she's given specific instructions on how to interact, followed by her responding "wonderful!" (or something like that) to someone sharing news of his dying father.
- the flowery language. at some point, Duncan says "how to you know 'empirical' but you dont know what (something much simpler) means?!"
- agree with mark ruffalo's character being PERFECTLY carried out. it was a great balance between being a bit of a satirical caricature and a nuanced perforance.
- the SCORE!! omg that music would have been disconcerting to say the least in any other movie, but here it just made sense. a very brave choice by lanthimos.

The injustice thing hits hard. I resigned a tenured teaching position in 2010 over the ethics of the college's administration. I haven't worked a fulltime job since. I'm a muscian now, and a retired architect. I found out I was autistic in 2022. I got a medical diagnosis so I would be believed. I hoped. Your content has helped me greatly. I understand so much better from you and other autistic creators what autism actually is, and how to manage my life better in light of it. Mostly though, thanks for having the courage to present yourself as you truly are. I find it endearing - that indescribable miraculous autistic quality that's present in all autistic people. The earnestness and vulnerability. Thanks for taking off the mask so completely. You're inspiring =)

The biggest injustice for me is that we are born on this planet, then we have to work a life time to 'secure' a teeny tiny bit of it. I remember as a teenager thinking that was outrageous! I still do actually. As for paying for water... haha it's true though - it's outrageous! I do relate to that, I feel outraged at any injustice I encounter. Or bad behaviour, even simple rudeness.

I just smiled watching this. I won't be seeing the movie, I think it would disturb me too much. I can relate to watching something/reading something/learning something and having epiphonies and being soooooo riveted and just wanting to share my thoughts so badly! I process things by talking about things out loud with another. Everything you said makes so much sense!! Love it!!

Have you seen the 1990 film *Angel at My Table*, directed by Jane Campion, about NZ author/poet Janet Frame based on her 3-part autobiography? I saw it the year it came out. Every now and then a certain scene would come back to haunt me because I related to it so strongly. I am now 71 and self-diagnosed a few months ago as being on the spectrum, having established I was ADHD in 2017. When it haunted me again recently I finally got that it was because she was likely autistic and read the middle volume of her autobiography. Although it did not have the incident from the movie, (it will likely be in Part 3) it did have many other scenes I related strongly to. Even without my awareness of my ASD it was a beautiful movie. I would love to hear your thoughts about it,
Also: I was stunned by the power and beauty of her writing in the one part of her autobiography which I *have* read. I can't wait to read all three parts in the correct order. (The 2nd part is titled the same as the movie, hence my mistake in ordering through the library).

i had soo many of the same thoughts watching this movie, i shared it after with my family and was completely shot down, told “not everything is about autism” but this movie really spoke to me in that way too - thank you for beautifully articulating this and making space for this❤
Idk I have definitely accepted that I am nieve... but also, I think I just find the good in ppl... it really is always there and my default is to see it.
Balance for me has been realizing that not so good can coexist in all of us, so see the good but dont give full trust. Keep my boundaries and show myself the same compassiion I've always had for everyone else.
I finally got to a city where I could see this film, and did so today upon your recommendation. Loved it!!! Of course, im still processing what i saw (😁😇), but in short, I loved the Steampunkishness/Sci-Fi/Fantasy aspect of it, how they caressed and treated topics that we seldom get to see in film, & lastly I think that Emma Stone should win an Oscar for her portrayal of Bella 😊

Hi Taylor, First of all, Merry Christmas! I'm so glad you enjoyed the movie. Yorgos Lanthimos is one of my favorite directors. I haven't seen this one yet but plan to soon. If you've never seen "The Lobster", you might enjoy it. I have never worked with Lanthimos, so I don't know him personally, but keep in mind that there are MANY neurodivergent people in the film industry... and some pretty big names! So, it could be that it's not an accident that Bella's character seems autistic. xoxo
At first, I didn't see the relationship between her and autism,
but hours later I remembered the scene in which Willem Dafoe's character tells her that she was the only person who didn't look at him with horror or pity... that's when it hit me, I thought that hers is a very peculiar look at everything, and her behavior is governed by unshakable principles, her principles are stronger than the the tendency to adhere to conventions... Neurotypical individuals have the tendency to follow conventions more than abide to the logic of things. She is not childish, she is super logical, children are not so logical, children rely a lot on other people's opinions... she, on the contrary, is oblivious to opinions...

It’s definitely a lot to take in. It’s an intense movie.
Its usually the ones who arent trying that makes it right because it just is.
I saw this movie litteraly 24 hours before I was diagnosed by a psychiatrist (But I was already almost certain), and I remember feeling confused as to why people hated this movie and what Bella represented. Everything she did made so much sense to me. At the end I felt like a beautiful, free, inquisitive "monster".

This is something I desperately hoped some autistic woman would talk about publicly because from the moment I saw the trailer, and then confirmed resoundingly during the course of watching the film, I felt it depicted my existence and brain entirely. Behaviours, thoughts, abstracted enormous way of viewing the world and its largeness as I grew up and developed, her way of walking and of talking (though for me this stiltedness fluctuates with my fluctuating functionality), disjunct between oppressions of society and self, and everything else. It was perfect. But also difficult to watch the audience respond with humour and delight to her way of being and unique (or odd), curt mannerisms in social interactions when in reality it is something that has caused mainly hostility, discrimination and real violence towards me. I do however appreciate that in the world of the film itself, her existence and behaviours are depicted as complex in their reception. A master work for the autistic liberated woman.

I had a delighted laugh as at one point you were describing how you felt about the movie and were searching for the best word. Just saw it the other day. Movies are one of my big Autistic interests, so I had to watch it when the Oscar buzz started rolling in (plus I too am a big Emma Stone fan). She (along with Ruffalo and everyone else) absolutely crushed it in this film. I'm glad I waited until it was available to rent because I probably would've felt awkward watching it in the theater. On top of the great performances and visuals, it was a story that makes its viewer think which IMO is what the best movies do. Wouldn't recommend it for a "switch your mind off" flick with the friends, but definitely recommended for those looking for an excellent character study.
For me, as an autistic person recently diagnosed myself, I loved this movie as the autistic experience. And I feel, personally, maybe others agree, but I think the best autistic characters in film and tv are the ones who are not written to be autistic. Because when they actually try, they get pigeonholed in the whole “we have to make it obvious. So lets pick every single trait there is, cram them into a person, make them a savant. They have to be super intelligent and alien like.” But when you dont try and you just make a person, it comes out more genuine in its coding, intentional or not.

I loved poor things I gave it 5 stars. I also went to the theatre by myself to see it and was enamored.
The opening shot of her jumping off the bridge in her blue dress was hauntingly beautiful. The movie was exceptional. She had a new lease on life and as she matured through the movie she became more free not only through her sexuality but also in her academia (the goat scene at the end lol) I i knew it was a reason I wanted to see it confusing trailer aside.
I do like this movie (literally just finished it), but if you're into really intense films about agency, etc, you should watch Mother, with Jennifer Lawrence. Also, Yorgos' other films are good too. Dogtooth is my favorite, and the lobster is interesting and weird. Those would be the two I would recommend. The favourite is good, but not as interesting as the others. And killing of a sacred deer is just intense.
But yes, I'm glad that other people are pointing out her character's traits! I fully agree!
I agree wholeheartedly with your sentiments. I watched it on Thursday night & your comments are getting me to feel the material on-screen a little more, as the days go by. I was very riveted but i was, at times, somewhat confused but i think that was the point with Baxter's "reconstruction", if you will. I haven't seen or even heard about this movie and I don't have to because you validated so much of what I've experienced as being autistic.
"I have found being alive to be exhilarating" and exhausting and I wouldn't change how I see life for anything. Even when I fight so hard against the injustices and the darkness and I refuse to give up; something inside of me remains unjaded. Something inside of me always wants to run free even when society says "Be yourself but not like that."

omg, and the foley was phenomenal; i was struck when the director included those atmospheric sounds of bottles clinking and people speaking while bella is at the bar. i was gobsmacked and felt so seen lol. i've never watched a movie that utilised heightened senses with so much intent.
I normally don't watch movies like that but I love the actors so I watched it and couldn't stop watching it!! I relate to Bella so much!
I haven't seen this movie, but I seriously relate to what you said about being completely enamored and not being able to leave the theater afterwards because you felt like you also ended. It's not often that I experience characters or storylines that are like that, but when I do it means more to me than I can process.
Peacock has the SyFy channel series "Resident Alien" and I relate so much to the Alien, Harry, and love the show's humor, lol. Looking forward to seeing "Poor Things" as well. Thanks!
Finally got to watch this because I went to the movie today. I relate to her so much by the way I march to the beat of my own drum and must seem odd to others but I try not to care. I wish I could make decisions for myself the way she does and not care at all how it affects anyone else. I’ll be thinking about this one for a while.

I haven’t seen or heard of that movie. Doesn’t sound like something I would care to watch.
But in relation to what you describe and the autism I represent, I could see how I could be misunderstood in some of those descriptions.
For instance, the childlike…I worked as an animator (I actually watched an hours cartoon today w my children, as most families in Denmark on Christmas eve). I get excited about the artwork, and also get silly w my kids. My ‘inner child’ comes out. Not the same as having a baby’s brain.
But today I did feel somewhat helpless. It has been a trying time in my life, and having many things to deal w at Christmas just became a bit too much.
My energy has been dispersed, for many reasons.
I sometimes wear ‘silly’ clothes, because I don’t have much money, since I got fired for being “obnoxious” (autistic/adhd). But really just asking questions and not adhere very well to authority the way as expected.
A woman can dream of a man, and all the interesting, exciting and wonderful sides to this particular one man. Not the same as many men.
Idk about the sex scenes 🤷🏼♀️

I am debating the following scene in my mind. I'm in too minds about this. it's like 30% she really just doesn't understand. and 70% malicious compliance. because she repeats the words so exactly. like "oh, you want me to just be a talking doll that only repeats what you told me. fine. let's see if you've really thought this through."
I have been looking forward to this movie just off Emma stone and the visuals. I AM SO HAPPY THIS VIDEO EXISTS I COULD CRY 😭😭😭

I watched this movie yesterday and felt the same way regarding Bella! ❤
Loved this movie… and yes, I think her experience is a great parallel for the ND reality.
I also loved the film. I went with my girlfriend, who is also autistic. I was so happy that my eyes got watery. I cried tears of joy. I felt they clearly made an autistic-coded character for representation without applying a negative or inaccurate stigma. It was so good!

I have adventured it and found nothing but sugar and violence. lol I think is the line bec that and a handful others also stood out to me 😂. I thought it wasn’t intentional as well but the more I watched I started to wonder lol it’s so bang on exploring a nt world with autism in sooooo many ways it’s amazing.
I just saw it and YES! Once she started coming into being an adult, I related so much to her character and how she interacts with others. It’s just a different way of thinking and interacting with a world that is innate to everyone else.
And I wasn’t an Emmy Stone fan before but she won me over with this performance.
As an autistic person, I have no issues with the sex scenes. I thought neurotypicals tend to be more weird about sex. I also have done autopsies myself, so that doesn’t bother me much. Except the eyes. That bothered me a little 😅

I haven't watched Poor Things because it's not been released in my country yet, but speaking of autistic representation I would like to ask you, have you watched Our Flag Means Death? I think that show did a wonderful job of representing the different flavours of the neurodivergent community!
I loved watching that film. it's such fun. and bella is very relatable. there are one or two moments of malicious compliance... I think it is malicious compliance. she's just playing daft. and this wonderful little scene to the end of the film where she talks to her fiancé about having been a sex worker and that she would like a little less toung when kissing. and he says he'll try his best. and she says "I really enjoy this direct concersation style we are having" or something alon those lines. and YES!!! direct conversation. talking about how you want or not want something without the other person getting offended. YES!!!
also: the film is like frankenstein+feminism+steam punk+candy shop aesthetic. the author of frankenstein is, of course, Mary Shelly. the name of Mary Shelly's father is William Godwin. I love that.

I've never heard of the movie, but I don't watch many movies in general. 😅(possibly because I get migraines from the theatre, I don't really like watching things alone, and when I watch with other I have trouble sitting still for 2 hours and keep getting told to stop fidgeting... and I need to get up for a bathroom break in the middle and annoy everyone).
Anyway, I looked the movie up on wikipedia for a synopsis and it doesn't seem like something I'd be interested in, but it was interesting to hear your thoughts on it.

I really related to her character, but trying to find other people who saw the Autism link has been really disheartening. People are so negative about this take online and keep calling it a p3do fantasy when it's so much more than that. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

mas horas depois lembrei da cena em que o personagem do Willem Dafoe diz a ela que ela foi a única pessoa que não olhou pra ele com horror nem pena... aí foi que eu pensei que ela tem um olhar muito peculiar pra tudo, e um tipo de comportamento regido por princípios inabaláveis, os princípios nela são mais fortes que as convenções... o resto das pessoas tem a tendência de seguir mais as convenções do que a lógica das coisas. Ela não é infantil, ela é super lógica, crianças não são tão lógicas, crianças se baseiam muito nas opiniões alheias... ela pelo contrario está alheia às opiniões...
I watched it. I enjoyed the film. But I did not identify with her... Perhaps because I'm not a woman? I'm autistic, but male... I do not like tatoos, I cannot understand why someone would want to mark their body, the same goes for nail polish, lipstick, piercing... hair dyeing, makeup... So the scene where she returns with marks on her hips, my reaction was like that of the mustached man in the film who saw it: Why would she want to do that? And in many other scenes, not all, I did not identify with her. Rather with the other characters.
I'm surprised so many people in these comments here are identifying with her.

But I was a bit ashamed because of how it gripped me. I have no one on my life-including my husband-that I feel I can talk with about it. While the movie doesnt blatantly say or mention autism, or claim it from an autistic lense, I almost feel as though thats for the better. Movies like music have left a bad taste in my mouth for movies ABOUT autism, and I feel as though the best and most artistic understandings of Autism come from an exploration of “weirdness” or just general differences from society. It just IS a representation. It’s a different experience of being human, and in my eyes thats all autism is if you boil it down.
Do you think Fawning via masking is more common as a nerve response instead of fight or flight or freeze when it comes to autism

I don't have problems with R rates content. What gets me in movie is scenes like the one in Christmas with Kranks when the chaos of getting ready for the party happen and the fact that their lies and stubbornness just make me cringe while the daughter is clueless. The movie unwatchable. Those types of movies overwhelm me. The one scene makes me leave room.
Yes, it would have been better to warn us in the beginning of this video... I stopped watching this video, and went to see Poor Things. I'm in my 50's and have had lots of "experiences"... I have been there and done that... I don't need to watch a movie like that to "learn" any of that... So... I'm not a prude, locked up all my life, who hasn't lived... This movie could have been great, but the disrespectful treatment of sex and the body and how it relates to the dignity of the human soul was super sad. I feel like my heart needs a good bath...
