I appreciate the way you use MDF as a material. About 20 years ago I constructed a 16 foot work bench so that I could build a Murphy Rebel aircraft.
A few people thought it wouldn't stand up. I preferred it over plywood because it was heavy and very flat. My workshop floor was terribly uneven, but a few shims here and there and it was perfectly level. I didn't paint it or coat it in any way to protect it, thinking it would be disassembled when the project was complete. When the main components of the aircraft were done, a friend of mine asked me if he could have half the table. He wanted to build another aircraft and already had an eight foot bench. He wound up building two planes. The half bench I had remaining is still in my shop. It's a little worse for wear today, but if I had properly protected it the way you do, it would be just fine. I've subscribed to your channel and enjoy your little apprentice. My little apprentice is now a father himself and has already built two houses. Cheers to you and your family.
That really sounds like a beast of a work bench. I like it! Thank you for sharing. MDF is a good product when used correctly.
What makes your video so worthwhile is that I always learn something new and gain insights into new tools...a lipping planer!...After a few different guns, a new compressor and lots of practice I am finally comfortable spraying nitrocellulose lacquer..Yes, it's a vertical learning curve. Another variable with spraying is the weather-humidity wreaks havoc when spraying nitro...so much to learn...so much fun! Thanks!!!
Thank you. Spray finishing is a great skill to develop.
You're one of the few professional carpenters I could find on TH-cam. Flawless!
Thank you.
In my 25 years of woodworking and my billions of videos watched on TH-cam I have never seen a disc sander on a tablesaw that is really cool
Thank you. I have them for sale. Check the links below.
Mike I really enjoy your videos one thing I really like is how much time you spend with your son on camera I’m sure he loves his dad keep up the great work dad
Thank you very much.
You know it cannot be a bad day when the bell rings and Mr. Farrington delivers a new video. Really high standards as always, you cannot go wrong with Mike.
I also have to say thank you, because you taught me a lot. I'm half way from completing my first alcove unit and I would have never been able to do so without you!
Best!
Wow, thats way cool to hear. I'm happy to hear my videos have helped. You've made my day.
I watch many woodworking videos and yours are in my opinion the best. Good blend of technique, speed, narration and overall length.
Thank you Jason. Thats good to hear, when filming and editing, its really hard to know if I'm on the right track, it just feels like I'm guessing. A little positive feedback keeps me making the best videos I can.
Love your work! A tip that my father-in-law gave me might be useful. In lieu of your very nice & expensive clamp collection to space the surface & laminate material, he kept a section of PVC pipe with aluminum shade blind slats. He'd apply the glue, let it tack up, then lay the slats on top. Next went the laminate, likewise with tacked glue, then he'd pull slats out & roll the material together with a J-roller. Would help keep your shiny clamps from occasionally getting laminate cement boogers all over them.
Thank you, great tip. I normally have a bunch of dowel rods on hand. I had used them for another project recently. The PVC is a really good idea because it will resist the glue pretty good.
Mike, your projects just get better and better. Agree, attention to detail is crucial, yours is superb.
Nice Ace Cafe tee shirt.
Thank you very much Barney. I have had the pleasure of visiting the Ace. Being a Moto guy, it was a great place to visit and enjoy a pint.
A true artist. Your attention to detail, quality, and craftsmanship in both your projects and videos shows through. You're the Matt D'Avella of woodworking and I can't wait to see what you put out next. Keep up the good work.
Thank you very much.
My wife and I were blown by the cuteness of the shop apprentice. And we approve him for approving this video 😊
Greetings from Croatia
Thank you. He is my little bundle of joy. I hope to travel to Croatia one day.
@@MikeFarrington You should definitely visit Croatia. I may be biased but it's absolutely beautiful :)
Once my kids get a little older I'd like to do some traveling, Croatia is on the list.
@@MikeFarrington That's awesome. If you travel somewhere around here I'd love to show you my shop and get a beer. I live in a place by the sea called Fazana (population ~2500).

Two years late just found ur channel , amazing work
Thanks a ton!
Very nice work Mike!
One of the things I like about your videos is how you explain things, whether it's about a tool, a specific piece of hardware, or the decision process you go through. Those are gems that I look for in each video. Also that you link them in your description. Call it lazy, which it is, but that detail makes me go look at those sites when I see something I like and I appreciate your doing it. Hope you have a great Thanksgiving!
Thank you Justin.
What you said at 4:25 in regards to milling long boards instead of already cut rough sized lumber for more precision, literally got me laid off at a cabinet shop years ago... they insisted on long boards.
That doesn't surprise me. I had my sharing of those conversations when I was first starting out.
Nice outcome !
Thank you.
Such quality product and video Mike! Thanks for sharing with us.
Thank you Erik.
Loved the tips on the painting process - thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
A really clean looking installation 👍👍
Thanks 👍
This is precisely what I want!! 👍👍👍👍
Thank you.
Great video, superb production quality. Nice to see how a pro works.
If you’re looking for a fantastic water-based finish that dries quickly (around 30 mins to dry each coat, a few days to fully cure) I can’t recommend enough the Sherwin Williams Kem Aqua Plus system. I struggled with the thinning process and drying times on all kinds of water-based finishes before I stumbled across KA+, which is designed specifically for this application, is KCMA rated, and comes ready to spray right out of the can. They only sell it in the commercial stores which blows my mind, they’d make a killing if they sold this to DIYers refinishing their own kitchen cabinets from their regular stores. I shoot it with a cheap 2-stage $125 Wagner HVLP gun/compressor kit and it comes out looking it was done by a pro.
Thank you. I really like Kem Aqua as well. Problem is all the Sherwin Williams stores around me a horrible. I often ask and they tell me thats not something they sell. The closest commercial coatings store is an hour away. I ask if the local stores can order in for me... they tell me no. Total bummer.
Ah, glad you’ve discovered KA+ as well. Idk why Sherwin doesn’t do more with that product. Thinning latex and other finishes not designed for this purpose and trying to spray them ended up being a fool’s errand for me.
@@spindlenine I'm with ya. Cabinet Coat has been the only other finish I like. In some ways its a little better than KA, its closer to paint than a cabinet finish, despite what the names says, but it dries super hard, sprays good enough, and lays out great. The one advantage is that it can also be brushed, I have found KA doesn't brush well at all, which is great for those projects where some brushing is needed.
Interesting, I will have to check out Cabinet Coat. Being able to brush the finish could be handy. Does it come spray-ready or have to be thinned?
KA+ indeed brushes terribly. I couldn’t believe how bad it was when I tested it out for brushing... great for its intended purpose in a spray gun, though.
@@spindlenine Give it a shot. I might not be your go to, but its always nice to have another option.
priceless! guys like you are dream in my book! i love renovating and DIY projects. i wish i have someone like you in my team!

Your attention to detail is sublime Mike, you've given me some well needed inspiration 👍🏻
Thank you Andy, thats great to hear.
Ever thought about using a waterborne paint air dryer? The work well in automotive applications where waterborne paints are used.
I have not. That may be something I look into.
Mike..
Another great video. Fyi..buy some welding sticks, put in a piece of ABS with caps on both ends and put in some paint thinner to keep glue off sticks. Easier to use. Just a hint .
Thank you. Good idea.
quality work again Mike!! great to see this level in an environment filled with amateurs bragging about how they don't know what they are doing!

Thank you. My saw was made before those were a thing.
You the man Mike!!👍👍👍👍
Thank you!
I hated using a HVLP gun so I picked an Graco cordless airless sprayer and it is awesome. Not thinning and it will spray everything.
I have a Graco handheld as well. I can get a better finish with a conventional spray gun, but I think that has more to do with what I'm used to.
@@MikeFarrington I couldn't get a good finish with the HVLP but with the Graco the finish is like glass. I agree it is what you are used to.
There are many ways to get the job done. I will say airless is faster, no question there.
Great video mike
Thank you very much.
Great one!
Thank you.
Beautiful work!
Only thing is that I'm watching your videos almost back to back, I'm starting to feel like a stalker 🤦🏻♂️

Really beautiful job on the joining and painting!!
Thank you very much.
Hey Mike great job on the desk - your video couldn't have been more timely! I'd like to see you do a video on how you build your drawers using the Blum Tandem slides - I've never used them and recently ordered a few sets for a project. I have instructions but I would still like to see how you go about sizing your boxes for the slides in an efficient and accurate way. The instructions have very precise measurements down to the 1/32" in some cases. It would be great to hear your experience on how you size your drawers and manage tolerances. Keep up the good work!
Thank you. I will be doing a few hardware videos soon (next couple months). I don't know what instructions you have but I work with metric for the widths. The instructions I use say measure the opening, minus 42mm and that is the width of the front and back. The sides are as long as the drawer slide. Hope this helps until I can get the video ready.
It´s very good job!
Thank you.
If you use any wooden dowels for setting the laminate on top of the contact cement it would be little bit easier since you can slide it back-and-forth rather easy
Thank you. Years ago when I did more laminate work I would keep a set of dowels around for just the reason you said. I don't do much laminate these days so having the dowels laying around is sort of a pain, but the clamps are always there. Honestly thats the only reason I use clamps. Dowels really are a better way to go, PVC pipe also is a good idea.
Someone give this man a TV show
Thank you, that is kind to say.
Gracias por enseñarnos a hacer muebles como los tuyos. No me pierdo ningún vídeo tuyo. Felicidades y saludos desde España
Thank you very much. I will have another video out soon!
I love it all except the laminate top. I realize that was probably a budget driven decision by the customer. I think it would've looked sweet with a butcher block look for the top.
Great job as always! Thanks for making these videos!
Thank you Gabe. I don't think the decisions had much to do with budget, (thats my nice way of saying money wasn't a big deal for this client). I gave the customer 3 counter top samples, wood, laminate and solid surface. They didn't like wood because it left an impression when writing with a pen, they didn't like the solid surface options I had, but they really like this laminate. I agree it would have looked cool with a wood top, but, this was what worked for them. Different strokes for different folks.
@@MikeFarrington whats the laminate top called, or what do I search for to find one? I'm from Sweden and it's hard to know what to translate into :)
@@xaph1 The product is from a company called Formica. Look at their site, you'll find plenty of info.

I've been using biscuits for drawers also, I think it's a good way to go at times.
When the height of the drawer is such that you can get two biscuits or more, its a great way to make drawer boxes.

@@russ3llfromup Thank you very much.
"If you have an HVLP setup and you're struggling to spray water-based materials..." - Does that mean you're using HVLP or conventional guns? I have a conventional suction gun with a 2.0mm tip that I'm cleaning up and I'm going to start spraying water-bourne paints. I'm wondering if I'll need to thin the paint down at all. I would love to see a video with more detail of your painting methods!
I spray with both conventional and HVLP. I have a conventional gun that can spray epoxy, so I don't need to thin paint to get it to lay down. This was an experiment that I heard from a painter friend, the point of it was to get the stuff to dry faster, or its probably better to say cure faster. Two thick coats can take days to cure, two or three thin coats may dry faster. I'm not totally convinced at this point. Also, I wanted to show people that you can successfully thin water based paint and get really good results.
I never miss an episode! Great work and narration!
Thank you very much.
Lovely job Mike, and as ever a faultless video. Spot on!

When I started painting cabinets the first one looked like a melting candle (terrible!) as you mention it takes a little practice a the proper mixture (paint and gun setup) to get a nice result

I love every video you do. Not trying to blow smoke up your arse but you seem ultra efficient and the quality is top notch, I know the workshop and tools help but they’re useless without a skilled hand to operate. Another great build 👍
Thank you Ben. Tools really do help, and I agree that it takes a certain skill set to use tools properly. With that said, I have plans to start showing alternate ways of doing things in future videos.
Excellent desk and excellent video! And I agree with you, that laminate pattern is great :)
Thank you. Its a great laminate for sure. I can't wait to install it on my personal desk as well.
What tip do you typically use to spray the water based paints? I have a HVLP system and a 1.3mm tip and even diluting up to 25%+ I can't get the paint to atomize properly. Should I order a 1.8-2.0mm tip?
I normally use a 1.3mm, but I have a secondary valve that controls pressure to the cup, so I can just turn that up until I get enough material. Before buying a new tip, I strongly suggest that you continue to thin the paint until it atomizes. A bigger tip will actually make the problem worse in some cases, more paint is even harder to atomize. Try thinning the paint more and make your fan pattern narrower. Do 3 or more coats on a test piece, see if it turns out the way you want.
Thanks!
