    In this video I build a neat fireplace mantel that is installed over some vertical shiplap. I top it off with some crown molding and base molding. I show each step of the process and of course insert my really good dad jokes along the way.

    This is the first comment I’ve ever written on this channel, but holy crap. Maybe sounds corny, but I grew up teaching myself how to be a finish carpenter and cabinet maker through TH-cam, and mikes channel has taught me so many of the things I know today, and has alway and will always be my favorite channel to watch. I now own a construction company that specializes in finish carpentry, and although not the only person I look up to, you’re definitely one of the people that I aspire to be in my career. I respect your work immensely, and look forward to whatever comes out next!Thank you so much for the content!

    Great tip I discovered for using screws into cement, brick, or mortar...
    Put a length of 14 gauge ground wire into the hole.. You can tighten up the screw very well without worrying about it stripping out the cement, brick, or mortar. Also a good way to save a hole if you do strip it out. Throw a bit of wire in and you're golden!

    When I glue my miters I apply even coats on each piece and then I let it sit for 2 minutes by the clock. Usually most of the glue gets sucked in . I the apply one more coating of glure on one of the peice. This leaves more glue in the miter and I get a stronger bond.

    • @MikeFarrington
      @MikeFarrington  ปีที่แล้ว

      Good info. I glue both sides and I do it kinda slow, attempting the same thing.

    In my opinion Guns N' Roses probably started off as a hair/glam band but then evolved into a straight rock band. When Appetite and Lies came out, they had the look of glam, but the sound was much more complex and edgier than the hair bands of the day. By the time Illusion game out, they were totally hard rock. If the original lineup (including Izzy and either Matt or Steven on drums) had stayed together, I believe they would be as iconic in the rock scene as the Stones, Zeppelin or The Who.
    BTW, great build as usual!

    I really enjoy the precision and neatness of your shop and work. I'm heading out now to clean up my garage purely because I watched this vid. I'll also blast some gunners as a tribute. They were defiantly not a glam-rock band. Their songs told a story, glam is just big hair and repeat the same verse over and over and over. The bike shorts may have crossed the line though. "what we have here is a failure to communicate...🙂🤘

    Also, I agree with the other commenters, and say that as a former and still-recovering Californian, G-n-R is not hair metal. They kinda defined their own niche when they got big. Also, it's hard to poof your hair and do stage makeup when you're that high. Still a G-n-R fan.

    • @MikeFarrington
      @MikeFarrington  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. I agree. Feels like there was a point in history where GnR would have been called hair metal. Maybe 10 years ago. Today, I look back on them as a hard rock band.

    Three quick comments. One, I've built a lot of stuff with MDF and oh do I hate MDF. Two, love the oh so subtle plug for the sanding disk. And three, I wish I could build and then let the painters paint. I always get stuck with that job too and its one of my least favorite.
    As always, the final product looks terrific. Excellent job.

      Agree with you about using MDF and hating it. At one stage I vowed I'd never use the horrible dusty stuff again, but only a couple of years later I found I just couldn't justify staying away from it. It does have a lot of benefits. It's the dust and weight of the panels I abhor. Cheers, David

    I'm baffled nobody jumped in the music discussion. Personally, I wouldn't consider GnR as a glam/hair metal band. They were really ahead for those years and they've experimented a lot (trash, symphonic, punk influences are all over the place). If you compare them to Poison/Mötley Crüe/Cinderella you clearly see the music lines are miles away from said bands. Another similar group I can think of are Skid Row, highly recommended especially during the grunge era (Slave to the grind hits easily my top 10 albums).
    Ah, almost forgot: amazing fireplace, great video and plenty of details. Thanks for sharing,
    Best!

    • @MikeFarrington
      @MikeFarrington  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Gun's& Roses to me always was a post hair metal transition to grunge band. Not that they necessarily played music related to those genre but that the time in which they existed was during that change in style. Poison to nirvana basically.

    Very good argument against this cashless society we're creating. You didn't have a nickel in your wallet. The amount of time you would have saved had you that nickel. And the credit card, for once, wasn't good enough. I'm as bad too, pay on card for everything. We really should be fighting to keep our currencies. No money in a card for a child's birthday you just got reminded about. No coin to throw in the cup of some homeless person. It'll be a very sad day when we go completely cashless. Rant over. Guns 'n' roses were a Rock band with great hair. I mean, far less people recognise Slash from his face let's be honest. 1991 was the year my son was born so I feel even older. Great times though. Ya wanna hear Slash talk about Rory Gallagher. Now THERE's some listening for you Mike if you're not familiar with him already. And don't take my word for it. Jimmi Hendrix was once asked how it felt to be the greatest guitarist alive and he replied, "I don't know. Ask Rory Gallagher." Rory was stepping on a plane to gift Jimmi his first ever left-handed acoustic guitar when he got the word that Jimmi was dead. Bad Penny, Hometown, Tattoo'd lady are all great choices of songs from Rory.

    I really like the pro tips you offered up on this one. Excellent work. GnFnR is not a “hair band”, despite Slash’s locks. They were too talented. And on UYI I, Coma is the best song they ever did.

    Blimey that radial arm saw looks an absolute pleasure to use! Nice work on the set up and the dust extraction box on that one :)
