The child sat within its protective shell, its eyes black and wide, taking in the desolate surroundings. One of the feather like embers floated past the child’s gaze. A nailed, three-fingered hand rose from the folded bedding and grasped at the ember. “No,” Din said. “Don’t touch that. Hot. It will burn you.” The Child retracted its clawed hand at the sudden command and looked at Din confused. “It’s fire. We don’t touch fire.” Mentioning fire sent him back to that day-the day Moff Gideon commanded the incinerator trooper to burn them out of their stronghold. The fire had engulfed them, its spurting tongues licking and lapping at them like a giant, breathing beast. He was lucky to make it out alive. The Child had used its powers to save them. He looked over to the capsule again. He found a green face looking back. Din reached inside one of his utility pouches and pulled out a thin green cookie. “Here,” Din said. “You deserve this.” The child took the cookie and cooed happily. The Mandalorian looked behind them. The sun had dropped even lower, bathing everything in silver light. “Let’s get out of here,” he said. “There are no friends at dusk.”
