    My favorite deformer is the Nonlinear bend. It's super useful for making complicated cylindrical shapes. Just model everything in a flat plane, then apply a nonlinear bend and you have a nice looking cylinder.

    Strangely enough, the shrinkwrap deformer did not work for me the way you taught it. I ended up in the attribute editor for the cube shrinkWrap1, setting the projection to "Closest"' and set the target smooth level to 3, and then it worked and looked lovely. Working in Maya 2020. Wonder why that happened.

    Hey JL great Tut man but I have seen people making hard surface stuff using triangles and even with N-gons (Boolean workflow)and I have been doing the same subdivision method that you are doing since the last 2 years for hard surface assets so felt that it is easy to get the sharp shapes with the boolean workflow, of course, we have to do the cleanup later.i just want to know what u prefer between doing a boolean workflow and cleaning up so that we can subdivide it or what if we don't want to hit the 3 buttons in Maya because there are no subdivision in-game engines.i just wanna what method do you prefer.

    Hey! is there any reason that my shrink wrap doesn't want to snap to the original sphere mesh? I tried another workflow using the sphere as a live surface and it more or less worked the same. Just wondering why my deformer isn't doing what I want it to do. Thanks for the tutorials!

    I have a general hard-surface question. How do you finish your models in hard surface? I mean you use smooth preview all the time, but you obviously can't deliver a hard surface model to the surface artist like this. Do you apply "smooth" after your are completely done modeling, and finalize? And I guess UV's come after this smoothing, right?

    • @marcomanola6225
      @marcomanola6225 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gurhan Gunay you can duplicate the model, smooth one so you have a high poly and a low. UV the lower poly one as of course it is easier to UV low poly models, then transfer those UVs to the higher poly model, aslong as you didn’t change the geometry between the two it works great.

    • @Gurani
      @Gurani 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@marcomanola6225 Thank you. I usually finish UV's before applying the last smoothing. But I really don't like to lose the control of poly count after applying Smooth.

    • @jlmussi
      @jlmussi  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I will UV the model on the lowest level and generate my UV shells. Apply a level 1-2 smooth. Unfold my shells without packing. Export to substance painter to texture. Render in I-ray for quick presentation or export textures back into Maya.

    There's a much simpler way to create a sphere with better topology. It starts with a cube again:
    1. Select all edges of your cube
    2. Bevel using a fraction of 1 and increase the segments to your desired poly count
    3. There will be hidden faces along the centre edges of your sphere, you just need to select and delete them
    Congrats on your new sphere.
