Appreciate your comment about the pot stand, however Kelly have redesigned the pot stand to also be able to set the kelly kettle about 3 inches above the ground to avoid scorching what it is standing on.
The Kelly Kettle was my very first stove. I have the trekker version, which it appears that you have the same in this video. And folks need to NEVER NEVER NEVER use it without the water. I find that the greatest use of the Kelly Kettle is in the wintertime because the rocket stove is so darn fast and you get hot water very quickly.
I have both the Trekker and the Base Camp. I take the Trekker as my main cooking kit when backpacking (in the Sierra's and other wilderness areas) because I found it easier than gas for the same reasons you stated, The Trekker with a hobo stove along with a large SS sierra cup and their small cookset ended up being more efficient than my MSR PocketRocket, when you include a cookset and 2 isobutane-propane fuel canisters (I've had fuel canisters fail/leak out - One is none.) Bio-matter is everywhere. I also take a Coke can rift stove as a second burner and backup. My Kelly Kettle Base camp is my car camping and SHTF stove. You can control the flame heat with fuel once you use it a few times, especially if you are an aware outdoor/backwoods chef. Even my heavy, cast iron 5 qt Lodge Dutch Oven is stable on the Kelly Kettle Base Camp using the hobo stove and there's no need for a big campfire requiring lots of wood. FYI: If you coat the inside chimney of the Kelly Kettle stove and the firebase and Palmolive dish soap before use, it cleans very easily. (That works for any SS cooking container)
A good demonstration, most get the lighting and fueling wrong, you were spot on. Your conclusions about the accessories and model size I also agree with.
I am setting out on a full time van life journey in about a month and half. I came across this stove as an alternative to, as you said, constantly burning propane or alcohol for my morning coffee and meals. As I will be spending a good deal of my time in National Forests as well I really need something that is safe and easy to set up and break down, keeping the fire contained. Your video was incredibly helpful! Thank you doing this review, I think it will perfectly suit my needs on the road!

I would add that one of the best, most significant advantages of the Kelly Kettle over any other stove including Solo Stove, Silver Fire, or any other biomass stoves is the Kelly Kettle is virtually weather proof. The fire is contained inside, so it is virtually unaffected by wind, or a bad rain storm making it ideal not just for hiking, but extreme environments like a windy beach, wind swept plains, or the deck of a ship in high winds, ocean spray and driving rains; the kettle will fire and boil just the same. I don't know about the ship deck option. Usually high winds are accompanied by heavy seas. Even if the fire isn't easily put out having the whole works thrown about or knocked over the side is unacceptable.

I have used the Treker 20 oz for the last 3 years and have loved every moment. Tip: Once the kettle is going, I pour the first water into my Mountain house and put another 20 oz. back in the kettle and put it back on the firebox. I stir the meal and close it and with in 1 minute of putting the cold water in. You have another 20 oz's ready to go. I made 9 Mountain house meals in the time a burner stove heated 32 oz's. On Catalina we used palm leaves that have a more oil content to them and more smoke. High Sierra's pine cones and pine needles.
Excellent review. I own the medium sized Kettle. I thought, like you, that the top pot stand would be useless. But have come to enjoy it, in that I can get meats, such as bacon or burgers started while the water is starting to boil. Then switch it to the hobo stove to finish. But I do love my Kelly Kettle. Not for every trip, but a lot of them.

I have the same kettle except my cork is made of cork. They have been around for decades. Last time the power went out (6 times in one week) I tried it with a home made trangia type alcohol stove and bloody hell did that thing boil fast. The air inlet created a spiral vortex of accelerated alcohol burning much hotter than free air. A nice thing about this kettle is you can store it with your tinder and kindling inside all ready to light.
Great review! In addition to 3 sizes, you can also choose stainless steel or aluminum. I went with the base camp stainless model, it's usually going to be packed in a car kit or a large survival bag. This is a high quality, well designed piece of equipment which should give a lifetime of use, especially the stainless model.

I have this stove in the trekker model. The bottom burn chamber is fine for wood, but put a alcohol stove in there instead of wood, and it is much faster to bring water to a boil. It is the fastest water boiler of all my stoves. I agree that the support cross member that you can use for a pot is best avoided. The hobo stove addition I have no experience with. Overall, very much worth it.

For all the Naysayers and Commandos out there, since that Stove Design seems to have been made for over a Century and was used by the New Zealand Army in World War Two in the North African Campaign against Rommel, I think we can say it's "Good Kit". Just Google "Kelly Kettle wiki" for History and Details. You know, sometimes Viewers forget that you don't only do reviews of Gear that are good for Wilderness Recreation, but also of Tools that would be VERY useful to have for Dangerous Situations, such as Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy for example. I'm definitely getting the biggest one for the Home. Maybe the Medium for the Car? Got to do some thinking about that. But like Tourniquets and a Pistol, that is a Serious Tool for a Serious Problem. Kelly kettle Kount at 5 (as of today). We love them. Cotton picking relatives always want to "borrow". Planning on painting a ring of pink high temp stove paint on them, maybe the kettles will stay at home and not go wandering. Nice review. We do use the hobo stove, nice for c.i. dutch ovens.

I have wanted one of these for More than 10 years. I just ordered 54oz one for $40 including shipping. I have a small bio-stove I use it with a pressure cooker and cook at home using wood pellets. I just like to know I can cook efficiently if we have power outages.

Great review but you missed one of the BIGGEST benefits of the Kelly Kettle... you see hints of it in the other brands because it was the informal name of the Kelly Kettle.... THE STORM KETTLE. The thing is there is so much protection from wind and rain that once you have that fire lit you can boil water in gale-force winds, as strong and as wet a wind as you ever have to face. It's an Irish design and proven to work in howling winds and lashing rain such as Ireland gets a lot of.

Great review. it is very fast, if not fastest, way to boil the water. Good part is you can cook at the same time and do not care the rain that much like in case of solo or other stoves. But yes, it's quite a big. On the other hand pot + stove it's similar size. For camping great, for hiking good. For light or ultralight hiking everything is big :) Good option. I wish it to be steel version with some improvements when it comes to plug and out od chimney. But all in all it's great stuff.

i use the ghillie kittle same thing but i use the 1.5L i agree not the best portable item but great for boiling water, cooking on. also a backup imcase it rains. you can cook everything on one of them
I personally love my ghillie , just hate carrying it and not because of the weight but the bulk its big and bulky which makes it tough to fit in packs. I also have a backpacker model... very small but the same efficiency and speed.
Think about it if you had to stay warm you could burn sticks to warm water place the water in 2 liter bottles wrapped in wet suit material . LAPTOP BAGS have been made from this material too most people never use them but you can find these bags at thrift stores for a buck I even found a lot of them in the dumpster behind a rental store. They tossed them when they got new computers in. If you were in a survival situation you would have to keep water in your kettle right? If you have no water in the kettle it probably will damage the volcano so go ahead and heat water to save that thermal advantage store the water in these 2 liters it is the cheapest way I know to keep water hot. Not that you are really trying to boil a shit tone of water but you got to keep that pot with water in it or you will damage it. What you are really trying to do is get a nice bed of coals you can drape your wool blanket over and stay warm. Sure you could burn the kelly and stay warm that way but I suspect the steam coming out would get you wet so best thing to do is store that hot water in a way that will keep you warm in the bag and tuck them in under your sleep platform or you can make a big foot shelter and stay warm with your nice warm bottles adding to your survival.

Yeah, I wish I had gotten the medium 41 oz. model. And the medium is larger diameter but shorter, which I think would be okay.
