I was 18 years old when this performance took place and thought opera was for old ladies. What I wouldn't give now to have been at the Met that night. Though he came to it fairly late, Corelli was magnificent in French repertory. I was turned on to opera by Pavarotti in the late '70s but I really regret not having seen Corelli in person. The most thrilling tenor voice EVER. Spinal chills! Freni, as always, is wonderful here. I adore her. Thanks for this post!!

Freni is such a delicate Juliette and she is perfect for the role. I love that Franco is so large that you can picture his loving tenderness as something special. for the role. They are perfect together,.
Corelli sings fantastically here, gloriously beautiful, vigorous, masculine sound, also loveliest of diminuendi as well as the big climaxes - the ultimate romantic hero. But Shakespeare's feckless teenager - not even close! But who cares? Ah, tenor heaven! 💘

If this were vocally any more intense they would both spontaneously combust! People might quibble about whether it is good Gounod, but it certainly is Romeo and Juliet, and great theater. One of the great performances ever.
Overwhelming : how can you listen Netrebko after Mirella FRENI !?? IMPOSSIBLE !!! How can you listen Alagna or Villazon after FRANCO CORELLI !? IMPOSSIBLE !!! The OPERA GOLDEN AGE is VANISHED and GONE FOREVER !!!!!!
Yes. Quality gone forever. There is no comparison between the singers from the opera golden age and todays' singers. They are not sincere artists, more commercial.
He has been referred to as singing pure French instead of skimming over it as the French do. Can't please everyone. He's Italian however and I would expect to hear it the way he sings it.
