In 1967 I attended the Hartford production, headlined by Franco Corelli and Anna Moffo. To this day I cannot forget Corelli’s high C, for which he took the breath, executed the C and crossed the full expanse of the stage and into the stage-right wings still holding the note.

I heard Alfredo Kraus sing Romeo at the Met Opera. I will never forget it. To me he was the best Romeo I ever heard. It not just about the high C that makes him great.
Alagna and Kraus had a slight tremolo from to much pressure. Whether or not Corelli had good or bad French, he's the most exciting! He was secure and weight wise totally appropriate for this scene. Not to mention the gorgeous dimenuendo on the high C! Gedda too was secure and had sufficient heft in his voice for Romeo. It's really beyond most lyric tenors. Jerry Hadley was probably the last in recent history to be the right voice for Romeo
I was at several of Corelli's Romeos-It was not just the C, but how he delivered the entire jour de deuil that was as astounding., and let's not forget the endless ending of leve toi. Yes, too big, dramatic a voice for the role-maybe I like Alagna but he hooked to the note, which was tenuous anyway-the lighter Kraus, Gedda you expect it from a lighter tenor-Bjorling-did he really have a C?

Corelli is my favourite and the most thrilling, but also completely wrong for this role. All the others are better suited to it in various ways. I think Bjorling is the best here.
Yes, also good as Radames. Ici, il est banni, accablé , et vient de tuer Tybalt, le frère de Juliette, alors qu'il s'interposait maladroitement entre ce dernier et son meilleur ami Mercutio. Romeo est donc forcément ici nerveux. @@ER1CwC

Pas faux pour le lieu ni la date (qui ne me rajeunit pas), mais j'ai opté pour l'orchestre qui était bien celui du Capitole dirigé par Michel Plasson et mon enregistrement en direct de cette "performance" que je considère plus émouvante que celle faite à Coven Garden.

Corelli chante très bien ,sans aucun doute et son contre ut est magnifique .Mais il n'a aucune idée du style Français pour chanter Roméo ,et d'ailleurs on ne comprend rien à ce qu'il dit . Or l'opéra Français est un piège car le texte et les paroles comptent autant ,sinon plus que les notes . Donc moi je trouve que les deux meilleurs sont en premier : Alfredo Kraus ( magnifique d'élégance ) avec en seconde place Roberto Alagna , vocalement héroïque .

Corelli was an absolute freak of nature. No one else's high C is as integrated as his.
