Sleep problems in cervical instability patients: structural sleep apnea and insomnia

  • One of the most common and frustrating symptoms that people who are suffering from chronic pain may experience is sleeplessness. It can become a vicious cycle of restless nights and feeling exhausted all day, as other chronic health issues set in. We often see this in new patients because of its link to cervical instability. Dr. Hauser explains various reasons why a person's structural neck problems can cause sleep apnea and insomnia, as well as what primary causes are reversible.
Caring Medical Florida is located in Fort Myers, Florida in the US. We treat patients who travel to our center from all around the globe, however, we do not treat all cases. If you are looking for our team to review your case and possibly see you in our neck center, you can contact us through www.caringmedi..., call us at 239-308-4773, or email info@caringmedical.com.

Results may not be the same from patient to patient, even with a similar diagnosis, as the body’s internal status is unique to each individual.

My gut said my neck curvature and insomnia and a whole host of other conditions are linked. I’ve repeatedly asked my Dr and PT to show me how to straighten my neck/posture and specifically ask how I should position my neck to sleep. They don’t take my question seriously even when I physically get on the table and show them what I need. Can’t believe I stumbled on this incredible channel - apparently I have to be my own researcher for health.

I feel the same, Dr's don't listen all they want to do is tests, tests to rule out other stuff, when we know our bodies and suspect something in particular, it feels useless, unless you have money to do something like prolotherapy. I've been wanting to for a couple years but I can't afford to pay attention.

Addition to my comment 8 months ago: Here’s what I’ve tried w/some relief. Side sleep with conscious effort to position my body straight w/neck alignment, then with a pillow placed at my back at rib cage level, move my top arm/elbow back to what would be like a runners arm position in stride. This makes my neck straighten out and also prevent me from curling up with my head tilted back. If I can get into a good deep sleep, the relief is wonderful in the morning. I also stand ins doorway with both arms on the side walls, elbows level & turn my neck each way holding while breathing in/out slowly 3-4 times.

I definitely agree with this. I have severe arthritis. And spinal problems. Have had insomnia most of my adult life, to the point of staying awake days in a row. I'm so tired and have so many mood swings from lack of sleep. Sadly my Drs tell me it's in my mind.

Also get an experienced female gynecologist and have your hormones checked. This is so overlooked especially by the male doctors I’ve dealt with. You may be referred to endocrinologist. Advocate for yourself. Learn all you can. It’s not on your mind.

This is SO true. I was a Champion Sleeper 🏆 🥇 🏆 until my accident/ injury. Now my circadian rhythm is so messed up. It started due to pain & needing to change my position frequently. It's awful & I now fully understand why 'sleep deprivation' is used as a torture method. I wouldn't wish this affliction on anyone.

I hope we are coming into a new age in medicine with this getting illuminated for the masses. After 3 car accidents as a youth: 1st bashed in my 2 front teeth, 2nd broke my nose, 3rd severe whiplash. No lawsuits so I am on my own now discoving how expensive crowns, sleep aids (nose strips, good quality pillows..), and non-opiod pain relievers such as good quality cbd and rolfing.
We need a major watershed and total overhaul of the health system.
Thanks for helping people wake up and understand whats really going on in their bodies🙏

Hi Sahily - we are sorry to hear that you are suffering from cervical instability. We hear from many of our patients that it affects their sleep. There are certain positions in which you might be sleeping that are causing this problem to worsen or are making your symptoms more intense. This is something that we can determine at our office with our neck vitals diagnostics. There are lifestyle changes that can be made like looking up, limiting screen time, draining your brain, etc. however the instability will continue to worsen if nothing is done about it. We are wishing you all the best and praying that you can find healing!

Hi Adam - first off we'd like to say we are so sorry to hear that you are experiencing pain from this accident. We understand how frustrating and even debilitating it can become. We would definitely recommend getting an evaluation. The thing with instability is that it is degenerative. Meaning you don't just wake up one day and BAM, totally unstable. The instability will continue to worsen over time, becoming a chronic issue. We are praying for your complete healing and if you find that you can travel to FL we would absolutely love to help you on your road to recovery!

I haven't been able to nail down a bed time and wake time. I get up often to go to the bathroom during the night. I'm still tired in the morning. I have a CPAP machine, but seem to still not wake up refreshed. I had lost the curve in my neck some time ago as a result of spinal degeneration. There was a time I was able to have and keep a set bedtime and wake time. But not in this last decade. Ive had spinal fusion from C5-7. I've had sleep studies done, result in being obstructive sleep apnea. I know I have TMJ, no curve to my neck, and never had my tonsils out regardless how many times I've had tonsillitis. I also have a very narrow trachea. Is there any hope for me?

I have watched many of your videos recommending, possibly, prolotherapy treatment. Inevitably, you show lots of boxes relating ot various conditions, presumably all of which have to be checked out by somebody and likely have to be reported in writing to determine if prolotherapy.is appropriate. That means that either you have to talk to various specialists outside of your office and try to explain to them why you think what you discovered as a possible problem is really a problem that will trigger the need for prolotherapy. Assuming a patient somehow finds the right specialist, do you find they explain the problem correctly to the specialist or do you, or one of your subordinates, have to try to to get involved to determine the possible problem is a real one, assuming you or they are able to do so?
How do patients, as a practical matter, overcome these hurdles to determine if the ultimate goal -- is prolotherapy appropriate or not, or do you do your own tests to see if any or all of the boxes showing possible medical problems are present? Sorry for the length of this message. Tx.

    • @JacksonStar4757
      @JacksonStar4757 ปีที่แล้ว

From my personal experience at Caring Medical, the testing they do there at the clinic plus getting a thorough understanding of the patient's history and symptoms is usually sufficient to diagnose someone with cervical instability. However, like in my case, Dr Hauser may oder additional testing outside the clinic (I have to get 2 MRIs and a CT venogram) to make sure prolotherapy is the best option and also bc the cone beam CT they did in the office showed I have elongated styloids I may need a styloidectomy plus prolotherapy or just the prolo. That's why I need the CT venogram. Good luck trying to get any "mainstream" Drs to even look at your paperwork from Caring Medical. That's the predicament I'm in right now. They are trained to treat symptoms with meds and don't want to find the root of the problem and fix it. I waited 2 months to get into my neurologist for her to be rude to me, tell me to take meds for symptoms I'm not even having anymore (thanks to my upper cervical chiropractor and Dr Hauser) and she didn't wanna hear a thing about that and how I got significantly better than the last time she saw me 6 months ago 😡 she wouldn't order ANY of the scans I need and if I see another "specialist" that's more wasted time and money bc there's no guarantee what they will do either. I've even been brushed off and misdiagnosed by Cleveland Clinic I wish I never would've went there bc they see it on my record and want to follow what they told me (take some pred and flexeril LOL) rather than what "some Dr in Florida" is ordering 😡😡😡 the care I've received at Caring Medical was exceptional so far and I appreciate that they tried to save me money by trying to get my drs to order the scans so my ins covers but unfortunately I'm prob gon have to pay out of pocket for them which is RIDICULOUS but have no choice. The "mainstream" Medical system and insurance companies are screwing people so bad it's sickening.

Hey doc, this might sound really dumb to you and offtopic too. But I noticed wearing a VR/virtual reality headset (mind you - those are front heavy, with no counterbalance) worsened my symptoms by a significant margin. meanwhile, wearing a VR headset backwards seemed to improve my symptoms.

@@CaringmedicalProlotherapy Thanks. My chiro is strongly recommending PRP. Been doing a lot of research over the months. I cannot for the life of me find any clinics that give me the warm and fuzzy I get when watching/reading Caring Medical content. Most clinics I've looked into feel less like medical offices and more like tanning salons, if you get my drift. Have a funny feeling I'll be making a trip to Fort Myers soon.
Caring Medical has simply dominated the cervical instability space on the internet. Your content is ubiquitous, and always very in depth. Without this resource, I would be pretty lost right now, and in a position of having to merely *trust* what my chiro is telling me. Not sure I could have the confidence to take the prolo plunge without feeling informed, and thanks to your content, I feel very informed. Please pass forward my gratitude for this content to Dr Hauser (and to the marketing/media team.)

@@TeslaEmperor Hello. Yes to the brain fog. Luckily it's not a frequent occurrence, but the worse symptoms get, the more likely it is to affect my thinking, processing, and perception. On the worst of days, the brain fog would get so bad that the world felt surreal and dream like. Kinda scary.
The insomnia is worked out for the most part. I do still wake up every couple hours but can fall right back asleep.
I've had dramatic improvements this last month all around because I finally found some stability exercises I could tolerate and have also been working hard on curve correction. They seem to be paying off significantly.
What's your story? Are you dealing with CCI?

Does anyone know of a similar service to this offered in the UK or Europe?
I am absolutely desperate. I've had a swallowing problem for a number of years now that seems to be causing many other symptoms and dizzyness that feels as though it's coming from the neck.
I've had no luck with traditional Ear nose and Throat doctors here in the UK.
If anyone knows of a service similar to that offered in these videos I'd be ever so grateful for the information.

I have been suffering from lordosis and kyphosis of the cervical and thoracic spine. Which means the normal curvatures are excessive causing extra stressor pressure on joints, vertebrae, muscles nerves etc. I have had a problem swallowing as a result of the excessive curvatures in my neck and upper spine. I also have times where I feel dizzy and faint. Like my blood pressure drops quickly and I have to sit down or I fall over. I also have a lot of trouble with pain as well as nausea. I xUnderstand how frustrating it can be. Have you had imaging done of your cervical spine? I hope you find someone in yoyr area to help you. I’m in New Zealand and nothing like that here. I would have to go to the states in order to find the closet treatment centre that does this type of treatment ! Our health system here sucks. Good luck

@@KiwikimNZ Thanks for messaging and I'm so sorry to hear of your struggles. I hope you can find a solution.
I also have swallowing problem, the cartilage in the throat doesn't seem to move correctly upon swallowing. It's never been put don't to or explored as possibly to do with the spine but more so purely looking at the throat. I've had neck MRI and CT and Videofluroscopy and they can see there's a problem with the swallow but haven't mentioned anything spinal.
Sorry to hear you don't have great health options there in New Zealand, I think it's the same here in the UK for most things.

I have cervical dystonia and I got hit with vertigo on July 7th. I still have the balance problem and it feels like I'm dizzy still. I got hit 3 times with vertigo between July 7 and 9. I had to be carried to the ambulance. The first night I got it, I thought I was going to die. I'm able to drive and walk. I feel like I'm drunk or stoned all the time. I don't drink or smoke.CT scan came out ok. The doctor mentioned maybe crystals in the ear. I never got vertigo before. Epley is not working. I thought maybe I got mercury poisoning. A piece of mercury filling from my tooth fell off. Anybody have any thoughts on this. Thanks.
