GRRR LAYOVER CHALLENGE: Hey everyone!!! Did you know #China now has FREE 72 hour transit visas for flight layovers in major Chinese cities? I had a 20 hour layover in Shanghai (Pudong Airport). Here’s how I made the best use of my time exploring some of Shanghai's top attractions. Note : As some recall , I lost a lot of China footage early this year. While I was unable to salvage my Beijing layover challenge, I was able to recover some of my Shanghai footage to share!
- 2:56 You just summed up my entire REASON for travel - in one sentence. "If I can see it in the States; then why travel!?" Yep, pretty much. #neverstoptraveling 💪🏽✌🏼
Maybe I should go to Detroit to see how people are living and if it is really that scary... If I can see high rise and supermarkets in China, then why travel?
"if i can see it in the US, then why travel?" EXACTLY! I have a 19 hour layover in Shanghai, arriving around 12:20 AM and flight departs 8 PM. Glad I found your video, this is dope.
Nice video. This is the first and only video of yours that I have watched so far, and interestingly, it's also the first video of yours that appeared in my feed, given the fact that this video of yours is six years old. Yesterday I watched a video belonging to a young couple in China also for the first time, and that video of theirs was also their first to appear in my feed. However, that video was just one day old when it first appeared in my feed whereas your video was six years old when it appeared in my feed
I will say I like seeing how high rise systems function in different cities, because layouts can vary so much and it tells you a lot about how the city moves. That being said, I only need to do that for ten minutes max to get my fill - along with finding a history book on the area later if I really need it. On to other adventures!
Awesome! I’m doing the Shanghai layover as well for two nights/two days soon. I found your vlog really helpful. I plan to stay in the FFC and just roam the streets and shop.
They have this pork belly dish in like a sweet soy sauce. It's so good.. Also dried dates stuffed with sticky rice in a sweet brown sugar syrup. It's so good! Shanghai is known for foods that are on the sweeter side.
How did you do it? Do you just keep your air ticket final destination, go to the maglev area of the airport, purchase the 24-hour train pass, explore, then return to the train station to ride back to the airport? Is there anything else needed other than the air ticket ?
@Christine: If we are going with China eastern airlines and have a long layover in shanghai,do we have to take all of our big luggages with us and have to check in again for the next flight? Or are those carry on bags that you bring with you in this video?
Recently I had a 4 hour layover from Australia in Honolulu. I took The Bus to Waikiki Beach. On the way back to the airport The Bus was late and really slow, taking it's time and I missed my flight to Los Angeles.
Oh no. Public transportation is always a risk in that sense, especially if you're traveling during peak traffic. Honolulu has only gotten worse. I'd book at least 45 min- 1 hour to get to the airport here.
It's so weird. When I was there in Shanghai, I was told that they aren't really allowed to do the street food thing anymore in the really big cities because it makes the cities look dirty. In Beijing, they are supposedly only allowed in one area and have to be licensed.
Interesting. This area had a *lot* of those BBQ street vendors. But it was an older looking part of Shanghai. Maybe there was licensing but also the city was like-- why not?
GRRRLTRAVELER | Christine Kaaloa Yeah... I wish I would've found this area. I love street food, even though sometimes it is not the healthiest nor is it always the most sanitary. Lol. I want to go to Chengdu. I heard it's a mix of Shanghai and Beijing, but with more culture and tradition.
thank you for the blog this will help me a lot because I have a 15 hours layover in Shanghai Pudong by July coming from New York. I would love to stay and eat on that Mall for the rest of my layover. Is that mall pretty near on the train station?
Pretty good and frenetic video. I was just in Shanghai last June. I spent 7 days there. I enjoyed it, but it's a really hectic city. One thing that I am still pissed off to this day was falling victim to the gypsy taxi scam at Pudong Airport. A woman wearing a "Airport staff" badge approached me and suckered me into coughing up almost $80 for a "Taxi" ride to my hotel. It was almost 2am when I arrived and my hotel told me I was charged almost triple what a normal taxi would have charged. It was late and I was too tired to argue. I feel really dumb for handing off my money and getting dragged to her booth when I could have avoided her and taken a legit taxi. One of those things your learn I guess. Other than that, it was a good time.
Sorry to hear that. Wow. Getting taxi scammed is never a happy feeling, which is why i always seek alternative options. At least you know about the Maglev now.
Hi Christine. I'm from Chicago. I've 22 hours layover in Shanghai. Arriving 7 PM in Shanghai. I want explore downtown so please advise me where to stay overnight so I can easily travel to must see places in Shanghai. Any help will be highly appreciated
Heyy Christine! Thanks for your videos, i am really enjoying them. So i have a question, hope you can help. I am flying to India SOLO in 10 days and i will be stopping over in Shanghai Pudong Airport for 6 hours. Do you know if I need a Visa to get to my connecting flight? I won’t be leaving the airport, just gonna hang out there. I am staying on the same airline too. If i do need a Visa, how do i get one FAST? Thanks for your help and I’m a Hawaii girl too, from 76 South Ewa Beach! Tanks!! 🤙🏼
Great video! Thanks for the info. One question, I am traveling from Colombia to Bangkok via Shanghai. Do Americans need transport or tourist visas to enter China? Is there an associated cost?
I love the street food in China so will check out the area you explored. When we have stayed in the centre, it can be harder to find the cultural areas. we live up in Tianjin and love the grit!
Hey I’m landing in Shanghai later on a 16 hour layover to Australia from London, do I need anything other than the free transit visa to leave the airport? Cheers!
Love it Christine! I have a fear of traveling to China alone even though I am Chinese and I can speak rudimentary Chinese. It just seems so chaotic. One day I will plan an epic China trip. Thanks for sharing another great video!
+hlontheroad initially I felt a little like that. There are many parts that are very cosmopolitan. It's very developed and CCTV makes it feel safe. 😁The main cities are pretty international.
peace - which hostel did you stay in for your shanghai layover? i'll be on a two city transit through china (1st in beijing for about 1 day and then shanghai for 1/2 a day)...do you know if free 72 hour transit visa will apply to both? many thanks
GRRRLTRAVELER | Christine Kaaloa I was there on the 72 hour transit you mentioned, but I think you still managed to do more than me 🙄 ... my favorite was probably the old French concession area of xiantandi because after the massive crowds at yu garden, Nanjing road and the bund, it was like a breath of fresh air, just a nice relaxed place to go for a walking tour
Wish CHINA has similar FREE Half day Tour like TAIPEI , just been to Shanghai and glad to HIT Lujiazui , the glitzy financial district & amazed on the 3 towers Jin Mao , Shanghai , Shanghai world financial bldg. , walk around the Pearl Ring , modern pedestrian walkways. Unfortunately DID NOT see these Slums & Grime of real china.
The problem is that if you eat in those shitty neighborhood you may get served fake food. They’re gonna serve you cooked cardboard and tell you it’s beef or pork. Wouldn’t recommend just exploring and eating wherever. Go somewhere more reputable.
have my theories on why they don't leave tho-- like the fact it's similar to the European continent but we have states vs. countries and each state is different geographically and culturally. But I totally hear ya.
it's easy for others to assume that. Our proud to be an American motto stereotypes us and it's middle America most see vs. the cosmopolitan districts. As a YTer, . I have country wars going on in my videos based on country pride, down to who invented souvlaki (or something like that) or if I've not filmed enough beautiful parts of their city... the hate is ugly. So "we are better" mentality is secretly inherent in every country. As an American but traveler who loves developing countries, I see the pros and cons. Only my two cents. With our new pres, I can't say if it will get better or we're going to go 20 years back. We're country divided at the moment.
GRRRLTRAVELER | Christine Kaaloa I think that it's true to some extent of most countries. I'm from Sydney, Australia. I'm blessed to live in beautiful country. We joke with New Zealand about who invented various things. I guess it is maybe an Australian thing a bit less as we say " in your face" or self promotional as Americans. We are all hoping to get through this adminstration unscathed. Pence is in Sydney today trying to get us to support action against North Korea. That would not go down well with the Australian public getting dragged into that. Keeping everything crossed for Trump to be impeached.
Aussis are known for being laidback country. We're a strongly capitalistic where the loudest voice wins. Our government has turned into a characature of reality shows. Many pray for impeachment but I have a feelng no one will be able to get him out. One can be hopeful tho
My sentiment exactly regards seeing it in my own country then why 👏😉 I have been to Hawaii. As an Australian no need to visit the US. 😜 Other than for the Trump 💩

- 2:56 You just summed up my entire REASON for travel - in one sentence.
"If I can see it in the States; then why travel!?"
Yep, pretty much.
#neverstoptraveling 💪🏽✌🏼
Yeah, it's just not as exciting to see things from home.
Maybe I should go to Detroit to see how people are living and if it is really that scary... If I can see high rise and supermarkets in China, then why travel?
I almost thought you wouldn't make it! I really liked this challenge, it had me on the edge!
+Samantha Torres haha 🙂🙂🙂
"if i can see it in the US, then why travel?" EXACTLY! I have a 19 hour layover in Shanghai, arriving around 12:20 AM and flight departs 8 PM. Glad I found your video, this is dope.
That's substantial. =D Even more detailed info on my written guide- link in the Description box.

Wish I had a longer layover just to shop!
Great video! We need speed trains like that in the states!
Word.
The car and oil industry will never allow that to happen.
The maglev are cool when the go passed each other! Cool video btw😊
Would have been nice to see!
Very good!
Great video, Christine! Welcome to Shanghai; next time let's collab!
Didn't know you were based in Shanghai. Next time I come by I'll give you a shout out- would love to collab! =D
They have this pork belly dish in like a sweet soy sauce. It's so good.. Also dried dates stuffed with sticky rice in a sweet brown sugar syrup. It's so good! Shanghai is known for foods that are on the sweeter side.
Good to know! I was looking for a must try dish that was also easy to find on my route.
Doing the same layover on my back from HK - Thank you for sharing your experience!
I was terrified when I landed in china for the first time. But it was an experience. I subscribed seeing your last name.
Nicee Im DYING to visit china!!!
Hope you get to make it there some day!
I hope so too, Christine! By the way, I really admire you and what you do. I wish you the absolute best in life.

Whe do you get the visa? can't seem to find it on their very confusing embassy US website.
I have to admit I clicked because of the pretty face, but man your videos are great! Subbed, and can't wait for more!
Glad you enjoyed the videos too! =D
Do you have to do any special to get a transit visa or does your ticket simply double as one?
I was just there last week :') this vid took me back to it all.
#memories =)
Can anyone tell me exactly where the "Tian zi fang underground mall" is and what it is called?
@Christine: If we are going with China eastern airlines and have a long layover in shanghai,do we have to take all of our big luggages with us and have to check in again for the next flight? Or are those carry on bags that you bring with you in this video?
Shanghai street vlog very beautiful. and also food😋👍💯😍💖
Great video. Now I'm trying to figure out how to route my next trip, Scotland (from Canada), through Shanghai....ok, maybe not my next trip.
haha!
4 hours and you left the airport? That's on you.
Subscribed!!!

I second Chengdu. On my bucketlist!!
What's the name of the hostel? Thank you.
Omg - when you started rushing ....felt the struggle.
+vernwash2012 haha.
thank you for the blog this will help me a lot because I have a 15 hours layover in Shanghai Pudong by July coming from New York. I would love to stay and eat on that Mall for the rest of my layover. Is that mall pretty near on the train station?
I felt your stress in that countdown. haha There have been times I've cut it close on layovers too
+Ed Agent haha. Either we'll get better with time, ..better at cutting it close or god forbid, will get caught.
Old and gritty is usually the best places to go to experience food and culture..

great video. true shanghai like I remember it. what district was the village markets in?
+Chen Zhiming Off hand can't remember. It's either in the video or the written guide on my.blog.
Great video! Thanks for the info. One question, I am traveling from Colombia to Bangkok via Shanghai. Do Americans need transport or tourist visas to enter China? Is there an associated cost?
I noted that in my Pinned comment. 72 hour free transit visa.
Cheers!
Hey girl! How's it all going?
I JUST returned from Shanghai this weekend!
I'll be traveling to Shanghai(7 hour layover😧) to Manila in April. I'm American. Do I need a visa to exit the airport to do some quick sight seeing?
You need a tourist VISA regardless.
Love it Christine! I have a fear of traveling to China alone even though I am Chinese and I can speak rudimentary Chinese. It just seems so chaotic. One day I will plan an epic China trip. Thanks for sharing another great video!

How did you find hostel
the bund is touristy but still nice, especially at night, although East Nanjing road is overcrowded and very much avoidable
+Gato what was your fave part about Shanghai?

It can come off like the US is the best. Why go anywhere else? (arrogant). It's getting better than it was.

为什么这大姐把上海拍的这么丑。。。。
u so did not do shanghai justice
What’s wrong with this chick.
Britain should teach China about being civilised, we had taught them everything
