come with me to shanghai for 24 hours...sorry this vlog took so long to edit, but it's a really special one where I take myself on a solo trip to Shanghai. I had the best time taking serendipitous walks around the old city, soaking in small but joyful discoveries under sycamore trees, exploring bookshops, coffee shops, vintage stores, local bakeries, and had an unforgettable night at the old jazz bar at the peace hotel, where the book I brought on the trip - the last rose of shanghai, is set.

One thing that's really struck me recently is how many times I've heard other women (from a variety of backgrounds! North American, Asian, European, South American, everywhere) say "Because I was raised in (name of culture or ethnicity), I was socialized to compromise, put others first, prioritize the comfort of men, not be loud, not speak up for what I want or my ambitions, etc" and I realized I've never heard someone say the reverse. It seems that the majority of cultures across the world are set up to teach women to crush our own dreams so that men have space to do whatever they want at the expense of us living our full personhood and dreams. Anyway, I think it's great that you went on a solo trip! I recently did the same and it was a good time.

      @tapiocapress  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +52

Food for thought. We all grew up in a society where women are socialized to prioritize others’ needs. Not saying this is men’s fault, but I think it’s up to all of us to change this. I would love to see more women take time for themselves and speak out for what they want, and men to be supportive of their partners/women around them.
      Thanks for sharing!

I think it’s our collective job to do this - both men and women have different responsibilities & also important to parent our children with updated narratives. Women crushing dreams to make way for men ultimately hurt women, men and children. Thanks for your video! I grew up in Shanghai and haven’t been back in a long time and it was nice to virtually accompany you. Sending

I’m a big fan of this sort of combo of both book review as well as lifestyle vlog!! I haven’t seen anyone really approach combining the two in this way before. Pretty surprised but pleased that I’m not the only one who reads books to get hyped up to travel to that area, even if rose of Shanghai didn’t quite turn out to be an engaging read

I’m so happy you like this! I’ve been experimenting on what the best way to include book content in my videos because reading vlogs seem to not do very well/turn people off who are not very into books…but this seems to be a happy middle ground:)

There's so much to like in your videos. You do a great job of capturing the vibe of each area you are in. I especially loved the city walk where you pointed out the details of the buildings. The older, busy areas of Shenyang are my favorite. I could spend all day exploring. I don't like all the new ultra modern glass high rises. It does nothing for me. More coffee in the rain please....great clip! 😊

OMG the cicadas are like the one thing that never seems to change about Shanghai (apart from the humidity of summer and the flocks of ppl of course, lol).
As someone who was born in the city but moved away at such an early age, each time I visit again it seems like an completely different experience.
Not only do I find new things but I also loose the old familiar places.
Giant malls once bustling with crowds are empty. Posters and decorum of some long gone Christmas all that’s left behind. Many places we frequented are gone or refurbished beyond recognition.
The apartment district I spend the first few years of my life in now seems aged like an old woman, paint peeling from the walls, skin crinkling.
When we first moved in, it was our first brand new home. Now it is rented out to a strangers family.
I think this passage of time is especially imminent for big cities. There is a melancholy in it but also excitement to discover new things at every turn.
Shanghai will always hold a special place in my heart.
I loved this vlog! It was such a comfort, thxx ❤!

Wow its been nearly 17 years (!!!) since i've been to Shanghai and it looks totally different! So westernized (and we all thought how crazy it was rapidly developing back then) but it still looks like the old city still holds its charm. Thank you for making this video, it's nice to get a personalised view of someone bumping around some of the nicer parts of the city. I visited wide ranging neighbourhoods while there and found it all quite different.

As I live in Shanghai, this video was definitely one of the first I clicked on when I found your channel. It's always great seeing the place I've lived in for almost 2 decades through fresh eyes. I was so disappointed for you when you saw the meat in the noodles - my son loves those noodles too (without the meat). Instead of "buy me a coffee" you need a "buy me some noodles" donation link. I'd be too nervous setting up my camera across the road then filming from the other side, but well done for making the effort.

I found it unintentionally 3 years ago when I wandered around that area for the washroom, and ever since I have fallen in love with their pumpkin/salmon quiches! I always go there to get them every time when I am in Shanghai. The best neighborhood bakery in the whole world! Byw, it is also such a vibe to sit at their little patio on the roof.

Thank you for this video. I used to live in Luwan District (the old French Concession) from 1998 to 2023. Anfu Lu, Wulumuqi Lu were my old stomping ground. My friends got married at the Peace Hotel and the Annual Commuters Ball was also held there at some point. It was a lovely trip down memory lane. And the I love the Foreigners' Bookstore. So many things I love about Shanghai.

LOVED this vlog! 💌 I spent the early years of my life in Beijing and hope to go back there one day with my parents so we can trace back our old house and neighborhood etc, so this vlog felt like a glimpse of my past in some ways (even if it's a totally different city). I would love to see your vlog/nature footage a bit more saturated/color graded even with just a LUT preset, I feel like the footage would be even more beautiful with a little more vibrance (though of course it's your stylistic choice in the end!) 🥰💕

Hi dear. I would advise you to check the ingredients on the packaging before buying crackers, ice cream, sweets or nuts. There is this ‘E’ prohibited numbers in ingredients that you need to look out for. They stand for the types of animal meats, gelatins, emulsifiers, etc contained in the food. I used to buy assorted fried nuts. Thinking it was just a packet of nuts, I bought but luckily I read the ingredients on the packet just before throwing one into my mouth. The nuts were fried in pork lard oil! So, be careful 😊

hey! I followed you last week and I live in Shanghai! I totally feel you, I do feel like I don't fit in... but lets add the fact Im not a petite asian woman lol But I love this city so much, there are so many magical places (not popular ones too!) and it might be a big city, but I can always find peace and solitude when I need it. I loved you video, it really portrayed the beauty of this place :)

Just found your channel, really nice vid! About not traveling alone, I can just say that I'm a westerner now 40 years old, and I think I only traveled alone once! I traveled a lot, but it's always been family and then with GFs. Something about traveling alone is not easy for a lot of people I think, me included. Maybe because I see traveling as something I want to share, it feels more meaningful for me that way usually. But I can totally sympathize with the pro of traveling alone also. I think I just didn't experience it enough to enjoy it more. Just gotta say though, what you are doing feels inspiring, because you are so different and brave it seems :)
