NASA sets aside some down time for the astronauts as part of their regular schedule and puts some less strenuous things in their regular schedule for varieties' sake. Yes! Space chess! Continue the series! This awesome! It combines two of my biggest passions! Just think, in ten to twenty years or so, you could commentate on chess matches between earth and Mars!
Levy's stare was a hypnotic abyss, drawing you into a world of enigmatic calmness. In that space between eye and soul, you feel the allure of a rebellious spirit.
Yessss, continue the series!! Also, I know this is kinda a goofy idea based on chess principle, but it would be kinda neat to see how many "points" a pawn is worth (generally) depending on how close they are to promotion
How close it is to promotion isn't the only factor though. A pawn on A7 could be guaranteed to promote, or it could be blocked by an enemy piece on A8. Same distance from promotion. And then there's the rest of the board to consider, the passed pawn one move from promotion is worthless if checkmate is delivered this move, etc.
These games open a really interesting logistics video if you want to follow up Levi. And these games have a fairly long tradition over at NASA IIRC. And they have been public knowledge for a while. Its cool to finally see one analyzed in an unerstandable way.
5:34 knight takes is good because it protects the pawn, keeps pressure on the king, and prevents any checks or attacks from white without a few moves of preparation. Basically, everything can be dealt with.
Very nice game! Yes, please another one! Chess is a known favourite game among sailors, submariners and even aviators when long flying, so it makes perfect sense to find it also among cosmonauts. But "Ground Control to Major Tom... Rook in d1 and put your helmet on!
Pluto is considered a dwarf planet as it only meets 2 of 3 criteria to be a planet. It orbits a star, has enough gravity to be a spherical shape, but can’t clear the area around it of similar sized objects using its gravity.
To answer your question about Pluto, it is a dwarf planet. So many similar objects have been discovered in the solar system that scientists changed the qualifications for something to be a full planet because otherwise, we would've had to acknowledge 87 more planets. This unfortunately demoted Pluto, but it's better than having 87 new planets.
I believe a game was being played between two astronauts on the station in the early 2000s. Game continued when the shuttle left the station and was never finished due to the one opponent returning on Columbia on its final flight. Should cover that game
Pluto is still considered a dwarf planet because as more objects similar to Pluto that are discovered, the easier it is for the general public to know the eight major planets. Otherwise you might have to also know about Eris, Haumea, Makemake, Gonggong, Quaoar, Sedna and Orcus too. Fun Fact: Ceres was considered a planet for 50 years after its discovery in 1801 before later being reclassified as an asteroid. It now has the distinction of being the only dwarf planet orbiting entirely within Neptune's orbit.
Hi levy ik you are not gonna read this but, i'm an 11 year old kid who just got into chess because of you, recently ive been stuck around 1000 for a while and i lost motivation to continue, just know that you are my favourite youtuber and i only love chess because of you, goodbye.❤
As answers to Levis space questions. Pluto is categorised as a dwarf planet (is large enough to be rounded by its own gravity, but can not clear its own orbit). International space station is 250 miles above the Earth so it is technically hundreds of miles above the Earth.
So I got to participate in the late opening/early mid game of this as well as the ongoing game 2. What people may not realize is that MCC is a constant revolving door of personnel. Daytime shift has more people staffed and had people in the office to confer with if the people actually in MCC at that moment weren't chess savvy. Meanwhile, weekend or overnight shifts have fewer people so the odds are lower of having a skilled chess player, let alone someone who knows what 'en passant' is. This makes for a tumultuous game where one shift may set up a line and the oncoming shift not know what they were going for at all. Or they just don't really know much about chess and make a blunder. The checkmate in this was seen for several shifts but one shift wasn't aware and gave it away. Game 2 is taking this lessons learned and documenting our thoughts periodically for subsequent shifts to reference. Here's hoping MCC can make a comeback!
It's at around 400km altitude, that's 300km's over the atmosphere. 40km isn't that high, normal passenger planes fly at like 10km, some spy planes fly at 30 km altitude.
7:50 Why can't white play knight takes pawn? If bishop takes bishop check, the knight will take back. If knight takes knight, then bishop takes bishop (not queen recaptures knight, or that hangs the d2 bishop). Edit: I checked stockfish, it says knight takes pawn is the best move.
Yeah I absolutely loved this game, I think its great Mission control and the austronauts play chess like this to either relieve tension or just for fun or boredom lol. The game itself was awesome, the analysis was even better. Great vid!
2:17 I had a geography teacher. There was a test about weather phenomena. I wrote the test perfect, or so as I thought. One time I wrote "légnomás" instead of "légnyomás" (That basicly is like writing "air presure" instead of "air pressure" accidently ). He subtracted a point beacause "This word does not exist, I don't understand". By the way "ny" is one letter in Hungarian, different from "n" or "y". I wrote "n" instead of "ny" in an other word too and he subtracted an other point commenting "I see you don't like that letter" . So he deffinetly understood everything. It is true, writing a "n" insted of a "ny" is a grammar mistake, but it was a geograpy test, not a grammar test. Also at the last year of highscool I had a 4.6 average gerade in geography, in a system where 1 is the worst grade and 5 is the best, and he give 4 as the end of the year grade. Usually 5 is given above 4.5. I wrote all his tests 5. I had a 3 for a random verbal test about rocks and minerals. And I got a 2 because he once graded the content of our notebook and also the looks of it. To be fair my nofebook looked like garbage but it had all the content it was supposed to have. Also teachers usually weight the grades of tests more than the grades of random BS like grading a notebook in the decision of the final grade. Also I had a chemists teacher who give the whole part of the average grade as an end of the year grade, but only if the average grade was under 4. So he sill gave 5s for 4.5. And he gave me 4 for 3.99 once. Because of him later the school had a rule that said that the teachers must give the better grade if the fraction part of the average grade is 0.72 or higher, but the rule did not prohibit giving the better grade in the 0.50-0.71 range. So I confronted the geography teacher giving 4 for 4.6. And he said "Well maybe I miscalculated a bit, but it is already in, and it is not 4.72 anyway, so I am not obligated to change it. If geograpy would be counted for your further studies I would change it to 5, but it does not count to you so it does not matter. "
4:32 When Pluto was first discovered, astronomers measured its luminosity, estimated its size based on that, and got a result large enough to be a planet. Later, they discovered that Pluto was actually two bodies, Pluto and Charon, closely orbiting each other, so closely that at first they had only seen one point of light. So of course the luminosity they had measured was the sum of the luminosity of both bodies, the size calculations where completely off, and neither Pluto (the bigger of the two) nor Charon was properly a planet. And then it took forever to set the record straight with the public, who of course by then had learned in class that Pluto was a planet and weren't about to let a bunch of scientists tell them otherwise.
Pluto isn't a planet anymore because they found a whole bunch of other dwarf planets that are bigger and closer than Pluto and they didn't want to add more so they kicked Pluto out.
4:37 Pluto is classified as a dwarf planet. It was indeed considered a planet in the past. Pluto was reclassified as it didn't actually fit the criteria of being a planet.
0:58 I definitely wouldn’t say that it’s “floating;” it’s much more accurate to say that it’s perpetually falling, but yes, it orbits at an altitude of 254 miles

From that to airplanes is around a factor 30. From that to the ISS is around a factor 40. From that to the moon is around a factor 1000. From that to the sun is around a factor 400. From that to Pluto is around a factor 40. From that to the closest other star is around a factor 6000. Space is vast.
