So much solo Keith Jarrett influence in Bruce’s solo piano concerts. But Bruce has a specific harmonic quality that Jarrett doesn’t. Bruce’s voicings are specifically him! Plus the storytelling in the songs add such an extra dimension.
So much JAZZ!!!!!!!! I stage managed a fund raiser he did in Boston for the Christian Scientist (his church), back when Hot House was out, and he was just as nice as he is great as a player. He didn’t want to play my request (this one!) in front of a religious audience, but he apologized nicely, and hung out with us stage hands before the show talking jazz (we were all students at Berklee, so you know, Jazz School!). Good guy, great player. Bringing those be bop lines into pop music is hard!
This song epitomizes and solidifies Bruce Hornsby as the premier songwriter, musician, pianist extraordinaire. The piano is his second language it would seem. Stunning work and one I keep coming back to. He is worthy of Kennedy Center honors for so many reasons including collaboration, mentorship, philanthropy, integrity, humility, creativity and obviously incredible musicianship. What a body of work that has skyrocketed past his early work with The Range.
ear Bruce. I admire your art, and the tremendous patience and perseverance. Thank you for the many uplifting beautiful songs. This piece of music is wonderful in every detail. The first part of the music is especially nice to listen to. The second part is enormous variety. Thank you very much.
Love that too, but no, unfortunately. And we probably shouldn't hold our breath for anything in the future based on the atonal direction he's gone. These last 2 records are almost unlistenable.
To state what I actually think of the music of Mr. Hornsby, might leave me open to charges of hyperbole. Nevertheless....there is no one I can else see in the realm of "popular" music who involves themselves so diligently to the continual personal challenge of the expansion and development of such a singular soundfeel signature. Recalling those not too distantly past days of brick and mortar stores that offered racks of vinyl recordings in stystic/genere categories - at least the current download-from-the-internet marketing era no longer creates the previous dilemma facing the store clerk with respect to categorizing and shelving. But drawing attention to the song at hand...what happened here...not those chord progressions, what the hell happened to the doctor's wife? It brought to mind a song by a Kiwi, Don McGlashan, originally adept on French horn (not the easiest of intstruments) the storyline, why does the narrator keep insisting that the rider is lucky....as with Country Doctor not the typical pop song, th-cam.com/video/05QKZplN_jM/w-d-xo.html
His improvisations are absolutely brilliant.
Just when you think he cant get any better...he blows you away with a new subtle variation.... pure genius!!!!

He is excellent artist having plenty of “stock” & “drawer”.
At around 6:13 (after the solo piano part) he makes a short comment and the audience claps and laughs.
*cautious applause*
Burce: Yeah, come on with if you want to
*sheer and loud applause*
So fun :)
Does Bruce have any albums like this first few minutes Of this video. Love that
Love that too, but no, unfortunately. And we probably shouldn't hold our breath for anything in the future based on the atonal direction he's gone. These last 2 records are almost unlistenable.
