    Seiko Alpinist all day. The way it plays with the sun is incredible, the videos or pictures won't do it justice. a year into my ownership of the Murph, other watches have come and go, several other brands/watch style considered, from $200 to $5000. The Murph is still an undisputed top 3 for me. Interstellar being my favorite movie and just the beauty in the execution, it's just so much better than the sum of it's parts. Such a phenomenal watch.

    As someone who bought the Murph I have to say that I agree with pretty much everything said on here. One thing to consider is that the calmer dial compared to the Seiko can make the watch look a bit dull in low-light environment (indoors, mostly). The type of strap you use also determines if the face of the watch will pop or not.

    As I tend to get lost in the woods frequently I chose the Alpinist (the golden SPB210 no less). Retained the gold toned deployant and substituted a soft brown suede strap. The Murph is a handsome watch, but falls a little short in personality. All that said, either choice should keep its wearer very happy.

    Picked up the SPB121 last month, I love it. It's definitely versatile, can be worn as a dress watch. Wouldn't recommend the calfskin strap if you want something a bit more "field watch-ish" (many like to go with the NAFTA band). I am a bit surprised that the Alpinist continues to get so much attention on this channel.

    • @Csibu89
      @Csibu89 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      if you think it is great and versatile, why are you surprised it gets this much attention? it is in my opinion the most iconic modern Seiko for the money, along with the king turtle. @philliprackow7153 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Be glad you got the Seiko instead. I got both, and if your QC-Issue isn't that bad i am gonna have to tell you that the Alpinist is just objectively a better product. The AR on the Murph is close to none-existent. It doesn't translate well on camera, but if you got any other watch in the price-range it is just SO bad, you can't even spot the hands sometimes if you are out in the sun!

    • @stocksxbondage
      @stocksxbondage หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@philliprackow7153 that sucks! Looking at your watch in the sunlight is (should be) the best. The Alpinist is definitely interesting, visually. My compass bezel is so very misaligned! Not a little but like a full mm off. It’s so noticeable, you don’t need to be obsessive compulsive for this to bother you. Date window becomes gradually misaligned throughout the month too. I even questioned its authenticity but I received box/papers and Seiko accepted it for servicing. In its defense, it has run 6 seconds slow per day, which ain’t half bad for the price.
      Personally, I’d trade specs (accuracy and 200m WR) for better craftsmanship.

    Been considering these two for a while to put between my Kamasu (on NATO strap), which I use a lot when swimming, and Bambino V2, which is good for dressy occasions. By the way, I love that there are such nice candidates in this price range. I mentioned my Kamasu. It's a fantastic watch for the price and I've been swimming with it in bunch of different places around the world in the past few years that I've owned it -- zero issues. On my recent trip, while swimming at a hotel pool, I accidentally scraped it against one of the concrete sides of the pool, and it now has some slight scratches. Not noticeable, unless you know about them, and it was a bit of a downer in the moment, but not a huge deal in the longrun, especially since I didn't spend many thousands on it. I've been considering a Rolex or Tudor for a while, but incidents like that remind me why it may not be a good idea.

    I went with “Why not both?” although, I chose the 42mm Murph. I’ve got 9” wrists, so it’s not offensively sized and I like the “eureka” second hand.
    The Alpinist has a unique problem, in that it looks good on so many straps, I rotate between red pinstripe on olive nato, silver half moon bead bracelet with gold accents, a red tinge espresso crocodile or a forest green lizard. It just works with whatever you throw at it.

  • @gjuttla704
    @gjuttla704 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    The Alpinist is my go to, especially with the screw down crown and water resistance. More importantly, the gilt on green is more versatile, can be dressed up more easily and with the green, can be dressed down as a field. I have gotten more compliments when wearing with a suit, the polished sides allow it to be dressy and the gilt matches the wedding band, so in my opinion, Seiko is more versatile and can be dressed up more so.
    I have worn with leather straps, aftermarket bracelet, but more importantly, the more protruding caseback, makes it amazing on a nato. The extra thickness from the caseback allows it to create more tension on a nato/single pass nato and gives you a much better fit. Hamiltons tend to wear too thin and flat, not giving a secure fit on wrist.

    I had this same question a few months ago. I was buying a gift for a friend who just finished their masters and I thought both watches would be a good fit. I went with the Alpinist for the compass and water resistance. My friend is a much more out in the field kind of person and it just fit them better. Although I agree the Hamilton dresses up better than the Alpinist for someone who isn't in an office the Alpinist is a strong upgrade from an Apple Watch. I have both a compass Alpinist (SPB089) and a "baby" Alpinist (SBDC159) and love them both. If you don't want the complication of the compass on the green SPB121, check out the SPB155. The bonus of the 155 is if you're a bracelet person (like me), it comes with one. It's comfortable and solidly built. My only complaint is it could use a few more points of micro adjust. The Hamilton is decent too though and Uncle Straps now has two bracelet options for the Murph 38.

I prefer wearing chronographs and the two best “dress” in my collection are my Omega Speed Master (3861) and Cartier Tank Francaise chronograph quartz (1993 model no longer made). The Cartier is much thinner and elegant for formal “dress” since it easily slides under any dress shirt cuff.

    Bought the alpinist spb209j1 a couple of weeks ago to celebrate getting a new job and I'm so glad I chose this watch. There's something special about that dial and polished case, I don't know, it's like a poor man's Rolex Explorer to me.
    Never knew what old money was, but I guess this watch is the definition of it😂
    And it's only +2 seconds a day, maybe I'm lucky with the movement. But the strap definitely needs to be replaced immediately😑

    4 months of daily driving the Murph! Traded out the strap to a brown leather one, and has been wonderful!

    The reason I believe Teddy is he is one of the few guys that owns a Junghans and cherishes it as it was the first watch that I really liked and bought as well. Although I have a silver/white Meister Agenda as it was the only one I could afford at the time it shares many traits with the Bauhaus versions. They are perfect watches especially because of the liquid like Hesalite crystals.

    Wish the Alpinist had a dark date window and no cyclops. Would be an absolute buy for me, but will have to go for the baby alpinist instead.

    Love the Alpinist, but would recommend the SPB155, or the “baby” Alpinist. It’s an absolute beauty, wears so well on the wrist, and is a a strap monster

      I agree. It would probably be a better comparison also considering both are 38mm cases.

    Always thought I liked the Murph more than the Alpinist until I go see it in person. After I put both on my wrist the Murph just didn't spark anything inside my heart at all, but for the Alpinist, that became instant purchase after trying it.
    Go see the watch in person is the best way to decide which one is for you.

    I really wanted to love the Alpinist because I thought it would be very easy to read, especially if your eyes are getting old and you need reading glasses. The problem I found when trying it on in a retail store was the gold numbers reflected a lot of light (perhaps overly strong ceiling lights in the jewelry section) and created a glare/flare against my eyes. The shiny green dial did not help. Yes, the cyclops is great (and I bought a Seiko dive watch with a cyclops), but the shiny gold numbers made it hard to focus. The Seiko SPB117 is perhaps easier to read, comes with a stainless bracelet, has a cyclops, and has better lume. I would have bought the SPB117 except that the internal compass was impossible to read without glasses.

    Heritage , case and dial point should be for Alpinist. Talking about model only, alpinist model takes back from longer tool watch history. Both case and dial show to be more elaborated on Alpinist compared to Murph. But Murph has a X factor point because its simplicity and field watch spirit.

    I feel like the baby Alpinist would have been closer in style at least. I wanted a Murph but found the black Alpinist SPB117 on sale for $400, so it was an easy choice.. I’ll get the 38mm Murph if I find a solid deal though

    Hamilton all the way as a dress/casual watch. If I'm going into 'The Field' I just wear my Casio Duro. I understand that the Field Watch is its own category, but honestly, how many people ACTUALLY wear these expensive time pieces while on a hike, camping, whatever?

    I really love the murph, 38mm. It is stunning and to me everything a watch should be. But bought the alpinist GMT in Blue last week for 630 quid new.. It kicks murphys ass at that price, and with the gmt complication. It is a stunning watch that you can wear for all occasions. Got it on a shiny blue nato and I feel like I should be in the movies.

    • @tTantPisForFrance

      Kicking it's ass it a bit of a stretch... The Seiko is a great watch, so it's a great choice, but the murph is an icon of one of the greatest films made in the past 50 years. Seiko can't claim that.

    • @lonewolfemcquade8133
      @lonewolfemcquade8133 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@tTantPisForFranceYou gotta be kidding right. Yes of course Seiko could claim that. Seiko was featured in Aliens and Predator that are two of the most Legendary Scfi films of all time. Seiko watche's were in James Bond films. Along with Apocalypse Now. That's way more of an iconic film than Interstellar. So how can Seiko not make that claim 🤔Interstellar is not even in the same league as Apocalypse Now, Predator and Aliens. Now those films stood the test of time. You really gonna tell me the Murph is a more iconic watch than the Seiko Capitan Willard. No I don't think so
