  • DIY E-Bike Conversion Part 1. Installing the rear hub motor, modifying the frame and installing the torque arm kit. In this video a Voilamart 48 volt 1000 watt rear hub motor will be installed on a old 1990's Trek mountain bike to convert it to an Electric Bicycle. This is the first episode of a multi part video series. This 26in rear electric bicycle motor conversion kit 48v 1000w has so far been pretty awesome. I'm still low millage at this point so I don't know how durable the electric bike rear wheel conversion kit will be yet. This might not be the best rear hub ebike conversion kit on the market but who knows, if it lasts It might turn out to be the best value. When shopping for a electric bike kit I was surprised by the price. I looked long and hard at the e bike conversion kit options before I settled for this voilamart cheap electric bike conversion kit. It comes without batteries so in the next video I will show you my low cost battery setup.
The specifications for the Voilamart E-Bike kit are:
    Wheel type: Rear Wheel
    Motor: Brushless Gearless
    Power: 1000W / 48V or 750W / 48V
    Torque: 45 N.M
Max speed: 28 mph or 24 mph
    Wheel Size: 26"
Max load capacity: 440 lbs (200kg)
    Net weight: 24.6 lbs (11.16kg)
The E-Bike kit I used in this video was purchased here:

How To Install Hub Motor Washers:
    www.ebikeschoo...
"Axle nuts go on the outside of the dropouts and are the last thing to be placed on the axle. They secure the axle in the dropouts by keeping a constant force against the bicycle. Most axle nuts should be torqued to at least 25 newton meters. If you don’t have a torque wrench, a good strong turn on a 6 inch wrench is plenty. Some hub motors can have their axle threads strip when the axle nuts are torqued over 50 newton meters. This often occurs when someone uses a long wrench and really tries to tighten down hard. The nuts should be closed tightly, but you don’t need to overly exert yourself...Torque arms protect your motor and frame similar to the way torque washers do, by resisting the rotational moment about the axle. However, torque arms are much stronger than torque washers. if your hub motor is going in an aluminum fork, aluminum dropouts and/or your hub motor is over 1,000 watts, you likely need a torque arm. A torque arm is almost always installed outside of the dropouts and before the axle nut. It is usually connected to the either the dropouts with strong glue or bolts, or to the frame with hose clamps."

"Hub motors come housed inside the hub of a wheel. Depending on the model, they can be installed in the front or rear, though rear installation is usually required for more powerful motors. Hub motors also come in both direct-drive and geared varieties with direct-drive versions being quieter, a bit faster, and more durable while weighing a bit more. The downside to hub motors is that they require more effort when repairing a flat tire."

Thanks for the video, i watched lots of installing videos but didn't find them informative enough. I have the same problem that rear dropouts are shallow and saw you filed them and now i know the solution. Another great thing i learn is how to disconnect those wires from the plug and reconnect them back. Cheers

I think there's something you should reconsider regarding the installation of the torque arm. As you stated, when the hub motor is under power, the hub's axle shaft will react in the opposite direction of the rotation of the wheel hub. That means, as installed, the torque arm will pull away from the hose clamp. It should be re-positioned so that the torque arm will instead push against something solid (and, not the cargo rack, but rather the frame).

I’ll adjust it when I need to do tire work. Thank you for the advice.

Could you explain why you need the torque arm? Will the motor cause too much wear on the thread?

The torque arm is used to protect the dropouts of the frame (where the axle slides into the frame). Some of these motors produce enough torque that the slotted axle could spin and deform the dropouts (particularly with an aluminum frame). Some people have seen their axle-hub-wheel separate from the frame, while riding. I have a 1500 watt motor, and thus use two torque arms - one for the left side, and other for the right side.

      Hi there,
I've just ordered a Voilamart 1500w 48v rear hub kit and a 52v 20ah battery, it should all arrive in the next 3 or so days, I've ordered a £12 torque arm, but just the one, did you make your own torque arm for the other side of the rear axle or did you just buy 2?...
Any tips for the install please?
      Cheers.

@@mickyb.8014you need to fit 2 torque arms for anything above 1500w and if your frame is aluminium not steel. You may also need to file your dropouts 3 to 4mm deeper not wider to make it more secure. Just take your time building it... Have fun on it 👍

I bought that kit. The instructions are severely lacking. Takes a little bit of think and adapt. I went through much of what you did here. Except not filing my wheel mount. I had 2 torque bars but then took them off to add a steel back rack. It mounts to the wheel hubs with flats exactly like the torque bars and are much longer. So I feel they will do a better job. With a 20AH battery, Wheel + controller, Steel back rack with steel paniers my bike weights 66lbs now. I worry about my tire. But so far so good.
Oh and I have gotten up to 36 MPH peddling.
BTW side question. My LCD started showing "bn3.6" where the tack shows the second I turn on battery power. I have power to the throttle instantly before pressing "M". When I turn it off it says "OFF" but then does nothing and still has power to the throttle. Any clue what caused that? I have a new LCD on its way from Voilamart.

I do enjoy your videos. Looking forward to your next! I found you from your ferro cement episodes, and would appreciate seeing more of those if/when you do any more of that sort of work! Thanks for posting!!!

I'll post one soon, I promise. The next ferrocement video in the works has alot of wood working for the roof of the dome. I've been trying to grow the channel a bit with the lawn mower repair. For whatever reason nearly each and every lawn mower video I post the channel seems to permanently earning an extra $10 or so dollars a month. Then the Li Ion battery projects are me practicing for the dream of a household sized backup at some point in the distant future. I feel bad about neglecting the house project videos for so long and will be correcting that soon. I still film I just need to edit and edit, lots of ferrocement house videos are coming.

Please provide a lot more details in your videos links to where you got your products what the product actually is where you got the controller what it actually is what a shock mount is. It’s nice to see that your bike looks so nice but please explain some of the things you did and where are you got everything from that’s what people really want to know. Thank you very much have a good day day

Shunt mod. How about making an actual video on how you actually did this. And if it burned out your controller then maybe you shouldn’t be telling people to do it. I don’t wanna burn out my controller because of a mistake you made. And have to buy a new controller like you did. Do you want to see some really well done videos on the Jetson Bolt Pro. Check out Shiva Sapkota and check out dad‘s website TH-cam videos dad has made over 218 TH-cam videos on Jets an E bikes. Shiva is an engineer and explains everything in extreme detail. That’s how you make videos like these guys. Anyway thanks for letting us know what you got on your bike. Much more detail videos are what’s needed here so that the Lehman can understand what they’re doing and make sure they don’t damage the hell out of their bikes by listening to the wrong type of information. Have a nice day.
