    This Ferrari 488 pista spyder is a well planned out supercar. Came out at the perfect time for Ferrari.

    I think people who are buying this thinking it will appreciate like the 458 Aperta, but already there's a sort of fatigue with so many "special edition" ferraris. Scuderia and Aperta are holding up nicely in value, both NA, and also spider versions as well. The added weight doesn't seem to punish those two but I think the 488 on top the heavily debated soundtrack, its not only heavier but the roof pretty much kills the only remaining value for the Pista, rigidity and lightweight.

    First, I’m not a Ferrari fan l to leave it at that, if I was choosing three cars I’d have a Lamborghini Huracan, a Bentayga ( controversial, I know) saw a just out of the box in nice shade of purple, and my third would be.......a BMW, an M3 of course......

    I'm certain that the car gods, when they let me have any 3 I want, will let me make some mods. So, my 3 would be:
    NA Miata 1.6 with ITBs and built top end to about 150 HP
    The latest S-Class from whenever I get granted these vehicles
    And finally, something a steel dash, perhaps a 1967 Jeep SJ townside that IKON has had it's way with.
    (list changes if I'm also granted a race track)

    For any sports car I want a manual. Pdk type trans get boring after 20 minutes. So I'd rather have one of those new porsche speedsters

      Stevie Lowe yes Ferrari has, but very little. This is a 10 year old platform they know inside and out. 720s is new and mclaren is still new to road cars. Plenty of videos about complaints of mclarens and how much they depreciate isn't even an argument

    It's just too fast though. Sounds like there's a bloke next door putting up some shelves, so dull is the engine and so small is the rev band he can actually use on a fun road like this.
    I find them all far too showy for me, but for open top sports car fun I'd be either looking out a 458, or finding a last-off-the-line vantage V12. Weird how there's such a hole in the 400bhp sports car market now... Like we've all decided we don't want sports cars with usable power.

      Different cars.The 720s is probably faster as it weight less.But it is not the track focused car so you can't really compare them...

      Here's the deal buddy. The MPSC2 tyres need a bit of heat to work, and the way he's driving there, means they are somewhat cold. The Pista has insane levels of grip, so does the 488.

      Jeez, that's literally my exact response.. E63 amg wagon (2019 with launch and drift) , a 458 speciale best and last na Ferrari mid engine (maybe an aparte to have a convertible) and a manual high revving track rat (but probably a gt3 rs 997.2)

    McLarens CARBON TUB means there is no loss of rigidity with the spider version hence if you are going convertible and don't want any shake, rattle and roll you have got to go McLaren. I'll have a 675LT Spider in Napier green please. At £275k versus £600k for a 458 Speciale Aperta its also a steal

      Gazza Brownhigh - I’m fortunate enough to have driven a 720s (the non spider) and it’s a great car. But there’s something missing. I’ve also driven the standard 488 and I’d have it every time over the McLaren. It is MUCH more of a driver’s car. I have no doubt the McLaren is quicker, but it’s considerably less involving.

      I agree in terms of the regular vanilla flavour standard productions cars from McLaren being to damn good and refined but the highly sought after rawer striped out track focussed LT versions are a completely different ball game hence why they are worth at least TWICE the price. The difference between a 650S and 675LT is immense and that's why I chose a used 675LT over a brand new 720S

      Unfortunately for us mortals there are a lot of people with very very deep pockets and so the sound and rarity of the 458 speciale Aperta means it's always going to be super pricey

    Ferrari just made a compition between there cars by adding turbos in v8 series
    Because this pista and f8 tributo has similar performance to their v12 cars like 812 and f12

      Well he was driving a very twisty, short road. Not enough space to wind it out much, I doubt a 458 would sound THAT much better on this road.

      @@neb4587 No custom exhaust can make a turbo engine sound as well as a 9k revving NA one. There's a very good reason why many people still love 458 better than 488, even though performance wise the latter is much quicker.

      Why many people comment on sound is the biggest weakness in this car?. don't you realize that this car is using a turbo? wake up dude, NA engine is almost dead. even Lamborghini use turbo now. My point is, there is no turbo engine (Force induction engine) can match the naturally aspirated engine sound. None at all.

    This car would 100% feature in my dream garage. Can’t look past its performance, design and overall excitement (even though the speciale’s theather factor may be even bigger)

      Just Pelé there is a massive difference in performance. The difference between the 458S and 488 was big, and the pista has underrated power I think. One ran a 10.15@141mph in the 1/4mile. The speciale is lucky to get a 10.8@130mph

    I know we should move with the times and embrace forced induction but compared the 458 this just doesn’t carry the same X factor you get from NA. For me (never being able to buy any of them) it would be the Huracan Perfomante!

    I'd easily take the Pista over the 720s, but I think there's a case of getting the 720s spider over the pista spider. Firstly, the 720s spider has nearly no structural or weight penalty. Secondly, you can just pop to the store and buy one. If you just want a Ferrari with a drop top, get the 488 spider then, or the Poforino.

      I'm a Ferrari fan. But I will easily take the 720s over the 488 Pista. It is more comfortable and practical for daily driving. It is quicker in terms of driving in a straight line. And it features the kind of doors that I (personally) expect of a supercar within that price range. For me, if I'm paying $300k or more for a supercar, I'd rather one that feature doors that are different from conventional ones.

      Tyran Mathurin yeah but do you ever wonder why the 488 sells far more?
      Mclarens are plagued with problems and their resale value is horrible compared to any other supercar.. you're basically throwing 100k away soon as you buy it.
      Ferrari has been in the game far longer and the cars are far more refined. If the 720s was actually better for cheaper everyone would be buying it, but that's clearly not the case.
      They're good if you want to win straight line races ( pista still wins on track ) but is it really worth the massive depreciation and the reliability issues?
      Not to mention the pista arguably looks better, sounds better and also comes with the engine that's been voted the best engine of the last 20 years..

      Russell Coight Mclaren went from no where to selling more supercars than Lamborghini. To say that Ferrari sells more = better is quite ignorant. For every 2 Ferrari’s sold, a Mclaren is sold. The difference isn’t that much and Mclaren are definitely eating into Ferrari sales

      It certainly sounds better than the dishwasher under McLaren's bonnet and it's interior is nowhere near as wrist-slashingly dull as any McLaren's either. Other than that, you're spot on!

      ABOlsen69X mmmm so wrong , I own a McLaren 570 GT , I was invited by McLaren for the launch at Woking, also own a de cat porsche 911 Turbo, my brother in law owns a 812 and a 599 GT0 , they sound incredible, my other brother in law owns a straight piped 550 Maranello , I don’t make comments without being able to back it up !!

      You're not backing anything up. Okay, so you have a 570. I own a 488 Spider and have a Pista Spider coming, so I got that to back up my reasons for why I think it's not what you claim. I've driven the 570, 650S, 675LT, and 720S. I think they all suffer from the same tremendous turbo lag, which I just can't stand. I think it's interesting that you say the 488 interior is drab. I don't even think the Lambo interiors are as dull as the McLaren interiors. And sound? Have you even heard the Pista? I don't think a 991 sounds as drab as the McLaren washing machine back there. Overpriced? I don't know about the UK, but here on mainland Europe, the McLarens are the fastest depreciating sports cars of them all. Not sure I will call that value for money.
      Have you even driven the Pista or 488? You say what you've driven and use that to back up your statement. But you're failing to mention toe cars in question, namely the 488 series.

      ABOlsen69X well we can agree on a couple of things 1. The McLaren doesn’t sound great , I am going to order s a Larini exhaust , this was the company who designed the exhaust for the McLaren F1, 2nd you are right McLaren’s are depreciating very quickly, that’s my point,my car is a 2017 , list price was 210k , it was optioned with full carbon exterior and interior packs , I bought the car in Feb 2019, for nearly 50% of list price ,with just over 5.000 miles , that incredible value for money in my opinion.
      However can’t agree with the tremendous turbo lag , there can be a small amount lag if u aren’t in the power band, driving the car hard and in the right gear , the power is instant, I am 52 and have driven older turbo cars that suffer from turbo lag.
      Check out Chris Harris of Top Gear, he does a great review in the 570 GT.
      The Pista is obviously a fabulously car , the interior colour probably isn’t helping to be fair in this review.
      My McLaren interior is red with full carbon inside , very uncluttered, steering has no buttons on , I don’t think it’s boring , it’s very driver focused, it’s just not as shouty as say a Lamborghini.

    Not related to the Pista Spider, but if I was doing the three-car garage question I'd want my Ferrari to be a V12. So it would probably be: BAC Mono, Honda NSX Type-S Zero, Ferrari GTC/4 Lusso for family duties (you can get a roof rack for them, right???).

      @@TheJoaomoreira No it is not. Who ever told you that is dead wrong.
      While they are VS cars, they are only limited by the time frame within they are made, and the fact that Ferrari keeps allocations low. There are in fact still a few Spider allocations left here in Europe, but the last Pista Spiders will be delivered by the end of Q2 next year as the last cars will tart their build by December 2019.

      @@TheJoaomoreira Says what? No Pista Spider comes with a plaque that states it's a limited run, nor does ANY Ferrari come with a plaque that says what number it is is, if it's limited. A 458 SA comes with a plaque that says 1 of 499, but not what number.
      Trust me, the Pista Spider is not a limited number car - I know, I have one coming.

      @@AB-80X @TheJoaomoreira ABOI is correct - you're thinking about the Speciale Aperta - not the 488 Pista Spider. They are (after all) different models and completely different engines.
      ABOI - this is normal confusion and what you've stated about both the Pista and the Pista Spider are correct. this is the method used by Ferrari for all of it's brand types - including the generic 488 and the 488 Spider, and will carry on through the Stradale, and the Tributo, as well as what other models - except the specifically limited designated build runs - which will indeed have a plaque.

    In real life the 488 Challenge race cars sound pretty damn good, so depending on the legal requirements of the country you are in there is definite room for improvement of the engine sound, maybe by adding a Capristo. I guess nothing beats the na V8 (except a na V12). And you won't damage your hearing with all these turbo-charged V8s.

      People who say the Pista sounds bad, has not heard one I think. It's very close to the Challenge cars. I heard a Pista and a Challenge run right next to each other a few weeks ago, and they are very close. The Pista is also very loud by comparison. This video shows us very little about the acutal sound and sound level.

    Give it some revs, Matt! Although a 488 will never sound anything close to as glorious as a 458, short shifting as you're doing in the video makes it sound even worse, like a misfiring outboard motor or a weed strimmer with long grass caught around itself.

    It's a shame about the emissions madness that has resulted in Ferraris having turbos. Have an electric car for daily driving and a N/A Ferrari when you want to have the ultimate driving fun. A Ferrari should be a Ferrari

    It needs to beat 720s spider then we talked if the pista it's worth the money. At the moment all reviews of the 720s spider by most you tube channels it's the best and is the fastest convertible.

    A huge part of why a Ferrari is so desirable was the soundtrack that accompanied your drive, this sounds terrible!!! Maybe the sound hasnt translated well on film, but if that really is it's true engine/exhaust note that's pretty sad. The only reason I can understand buying a convertible supercar is to hear its glorious roar/bark/scream, without that you are just getting a worse version with next to no pay off!!!

      I don't know about the Pista version but the "base" 488 doesn't sound bad, it just doesn't sound as good as the 458... They are more bassy and less high-pitched with a slight blowing sound from the turbos (nothing like a Nissan GTR R35 though). And you can still go aftermarket anyway, so...

      @@Porkycheun I much prefer the sound of a naturally aspirated V engine, especially Ferrari or Lamborghini engines!!! A GTR does sound good though, no denying that. A GTR would be quicker on wet British roads most of the time too. I love GTRs, such incredibly useable power and more importantly traction. Plus the incredible aftermarket tuning that's available for that car makes it a winner in my eyes. A Ferrari is good for being seen in, the GTR is perfect for going incredible quickly all year round!!!

      @@davidkennedy1077 A GTR sounds good but only with aftermarket exhaust, stock it just sounds like a massive leaf blower (no joke), a bit like the Megane 3 RS but on steroïds. I have yet to experience a GTR from behind the wheel but a Ferrari is great to drive too (when they are not broke down lol) and with modern days electronics they can be driven easily all year round also, maybe not as fast though (except FF/GTC4 Lusso probably). In the end, they are all great cars to be enjoyed! ;)
