Base earth is also such a good combo. Also I think you are undervaluing the past returns again. i often play past returns before the first stage 3 card arrives. In a 4 player game someone will be able to pay the energy most likely and it costs 4 time but you are basically generate 2 free actions for every spirit. with those actions combined a team can easily wipe a whole board. You can easily fit Past returns in a difficulty 15+ game and normally you win 1-2 turns after that, becasue everyone has so many extra actions. I would say it is way way stronger in multiplayer. just way more planning is required. Give it a few more tries : )
my first two player level 6 was fractured and earthquake. slipping extra cards was key to hit that earthquake. especially after the first big earthquake

My favorite combo is with Downpour, which can use G2 almost endlessly and Fractured puts cards into play for them.
