Yeah, he was joking around, he understands that dice rolling as a game action is completely different from just picking up and rolling die for shiggles.
@43:00 "The Professor is confused." IDK if he is because members of the infamous Goon Squad did say that they would "go Gooning" when they attacked people, often unsuspecting "newbs", in Eve Online. Yup, plus Goonswarm Federation still run their annual "Burn Jita" event as far as I am aware (haven't played in a few years) where they try and gank anything that moves in Jita (the game's main trade hub) for a day or so.
Sam is such a natural storyteller. He spent the whole time setting the stage and getting everything in place. I should have seen that ending coming, and yet it still knocked me out of my seat. Great decks, great people, great banter - an absolutely top tier episode.
to be fair, 2d6 and 1d12 are more different than you may think. outcome range for 1d12 is 1-12 but for 2d6 is 2-12, and it throws off the odds of hitting a few numbers as well (think of how many ways you can get like a 8 with two dice). The odds make a bell curve
Especially makes a difference in how beneficial it is to the roller when they need to roll higher than a low number. On 1d12, there are 8 possible rolls out of 12 that are higher than 4, for an 8/12 chance, while on 2d6, there are 30 rolls out of 36, for a 10/12 chance. Even more obvious if it was something like 1 damage, where on a d12 there's at least a 1/12 chance of not rolling higher by rolling exactly 1, and on 2d6 there's no possible result that isn't higher than 1.
Yeah, the fact that Prof is bothered by spindowns because they're unfair (literally affecting roll percentages by less than a 1000th of a percent at most and just as likely to roll unfairly low as unfairly high) and then offers to roll two d6 instead of a d12 is just mind boggling. He proves once again he definitely taught English, not math.

Spencer's argument on rolling dice has strong kitchen table Magic vibes. Definitely something a new player sees and thinks they've broken the game and have no idea why they printed such a crazy card.
In fairness, Magic text can be so unbelievably literal that I totally get his point. Case in point, wheel of potential from MH3, on the printed card includes one phrase stating you may pay x amount. The next sentence states you can exile x amount of cards from your deck and play them. The lack of a phrase like ‘if x was paid this way’ or ‘you must pay x amount’ totally makes those two almost entirely disconnected statements, I can declare an amount for x, I have the OPTION to pay it and, because there’s no stipulation I had to pay x amount in order to use the second ability, I can declare x is 50, not pay the 50, and exile 50 cards from my library and play the best ones.

The reason why a d12 does not equal 2d6: a d12 has an equal chance of being any number 1 through 12, whereas 2d6's probability is an upward curve, starting at 2 maxing out at 7, and then dropping back to 12. 2d6 not only has an uneven distribution of probability, but also has no chance of hitting a 1.
