  • Join journalist Pedro Pinto and Yuval Noah Harari as they delve into the future of artificial intelligence (A.I.). Together, they explore pressing questions in front of a live audience, such as: What will be the impact of A.I. on democracy and politics? How can we maintain human connection in the age of A.I.? What skills will be crucial for the future? And what does the future of education hold?
    Filmed on May 19 2023 in Lisbon, Portugal and produced by the Fundação Francisco Manuel dos Santos (FFMS), in what marks the first live recording of the show: "It's not that simple."

      🧠I think AI will affect humanity the same way the Neolithic Revolution changed the course of humanity and we still aren't aware how much the Neolithic Revolution has changed human society let alone predict how much AI will affect humanity cauz this, like mr. Harari explains, will indeed happens much faster.
      I believe that there is a difference between humanity & modern society;
      modern society requires technology, while humanity does not.
      🤐The problem with humanity is that we are addicted to luxury which makes us prone to technology, which ultimately makes a modern human lazy. Especially compared to the humans before the Neolithic Revolution.

But others say "great, go forward". You have all the rest of your life to live, maybe children and grandchildren to enjoy and learn from. What I have seen personally about AI is a simple example. A student of mine---I was teaching English to working professionals as a second language---was a designer. When he learned how to speak English, in one of our discussions, I asked him if he liked to do sketches or drawings or paintings at the weekends. Silence. He finally answered that in his company, the drawing course was deleted from the curriculum because the AI program from Apple was sufficient for him to do his job without knowing how to draw. Let that sink in: he was a draughtsman who never learned how to draw and who never had to learn how to draw to do his job! Here is the clincher: when I asked him if he was curious about learning how to draw for example, for pleasure or to paint a picture, his response shocked me to the core. He said he was jaur fine like that; he didn't want to learn how to draw because his program did it for him. He saw no reason to learn how to draw. This is what I think we have to worry about; people will gladly give up having to learn a skill if AI assisted programs can do it for them. To me, this is a red flag. This is one small example and I think as a society we have to draw a line somewhere about what we will let AI do. One last thing; what was appalling to me was that the company that hired him as a draughtsman willingly deleted the basic drawing class that used to be required. A drawing teacher lost his job because of Apple's program.

    • @T3Z1993
      @T3Z1993 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      Interesting. I am more familiar with Apple products than most, and I also happen to be an artist. As far as I know, Apple doesn’t have a first party application that draws for you but there are third party applications that can assist with the drafting process like autoCAD software. As an artist, I cringe at the idea of forfeiting all my sweat equity for AI to become the be-all and end-all. I create because I enjoy the simple yet ever complex process of creating. I wonder if your student feels the same or if he’s in it just for a payday

      @@T3Z1993 GGGGGGGGGGGreat to hear from you. Thanks for fact-checking. I am only repeating what my former student told me, and what I understood was that all the people his age in the company never had to learn how to draw, the drawing class was deemed unnecessary by the administration. because the app could do the job. He said that all the people in the department who had learned how to draw could for example, draw a pair of glasses in perspective, whereas for him and his peers, it was much more difficult because they had never learned perspective. The most astounding thing for me is that he was not even curious to learn how to draw for his own pleasure! This is human nature: once you've got a dishwasher...

Just like humans eventually did when we were nothing but Atoms that evolved from a spark. @@Rexcelot good luck getting people to adopt your odd definition of "Real AI™"; why must an AI create itself and create new AIs to be as intelligent or greater than humans? And your explanation of how AIs come up with thoughts is simply wrong, try learning about AI before you spout off.
      Large Language Models ingest vast amounts of data and adjust the weights between billions of artificial neurons in order to predict the next word (or pixel) in additional input. That forces them to build a representation of concepts and ideas and relationships so that their output in response to any prompt (advanced law degree exam, poetry writing, the Mona Lisa riding a unicycle) correct. Humans set up this training process but are absolutely not "inputting the data they want the AI to say"; they are heavily involved in later fine-tuning the model to generate text (and image) responses that are useful and not harmful for humans.
      How else do you propose a _language_ model become intelligent other than training on text produced by humans? You can imagine a robot learning to interact with the world on its own, but language is the core pathway through which we demonstrate most forms of intelligence (reasoning, story-telling, creativity, question answering, test-taking, etc.).

      True, but the basic and hard truth is that in this day and age exploitation is rewarded due to the economic and social structures we have collectively created.

      The more specialized you are the more you get paid?

    “If we’re so smart, why are we doing so many dumb things?”
    I can’t remember which AI safety researcher it was who pointed out that we are the first thing that evolved to be intelligent enough to develop science, culture, language and all of this. And that means that we are about the dumbest creature that could do those things.
    We really are not that smart. I think about the ridiculous errors I watch my smartest friends make, the errors _I_ make, and I wish we had more humility.

      "I think about the ridiculous errors I watch my smartest friends make, the errors I make, and I wish we had more humility."
      🤔The difference between intelligence & wisdom is that:
      I) wisdom = experience & experience = practical knowledge
      II) intelligence = (theoretical) knowledge, however knowledge does not mean experience. The only way to gain experience is by making mistakes aka learning = gaining practical knowledge.
      In short:
      wisdom = experience
      intelligence = knowledge
      🧠Experience is always knowledge, but knowledge is not experience.
      😶My question now is if AI can gain experience? So far I believe AI can only gain theoretical knowledge.

      @@TrickyD So far, pretty much yes. But the idea of power through knowledge-based data, verbal (ideational?) fluency, and persuasion will begin to be "shaped" with real time experiences. This is theory of mind and behavior. Right now once trained for something, models are static and just "work," sort of well or not. But, hopefully, once they become dynamically trainable in real-time (by experiences), perhaps our robots and AGI's will begin to gain wisdom. That would mean, if localized, sort of personalities.

    Very interesting. Three ways to handle stress, now and in this predicted future shared with AI technologies. One is to watch and remember what it is/was like to be children and how much fun (and frustration too) it was to be young and growing up. The second is similar and that is what it is like to be much older and "retired" and the grace and enjoyment with which so many senior citizens happily live the rest of their lives (particularly with the good health the future will bring). Third and also similar is how much fun and enjoyment and enlightening it is to travel as a visitor or tourist or vacationist, to be a regular "Hitchhiker" - around the planet, around the solar system, around cultures and societies, through histories, STEAM, etc. I suspect the "world of abundance" in the future will be one of inner and outer exploration, discovery, and reward. Family will still be of central importance but "extended". Purposes and goals may be redefined but still directional for us human agents. Hope so. Heaven can wait a bit longer. 🙂

      This man is so great he couldn't drop his head down and observe that he is a man!

    "We need to change the incentive structure." One of if not the most important sentences in the whole talk.

      And the “incentive” they are pushing, and want you to accept, is “own nothing and be happy”. This is so that THEY will own everything and YOU will be under their control!
      That’s DEMONIC theology!!

    It's not up to humans to be flexible, it's up to technology. Technology is there to serve people and so is the economic system, through an autonomy income that will allow us to freely chose our activities to free ourselves from the market dictatorship.
