almost no one remembers or appreciates Blossom any longer - so happy and proud to be one of the few.. winsome, wistful, singular singing voice.. her voice is a musical instrument as instantly and unmistakably recognized as Carlos Santana's guitar..
The term "one of a kind" is frequently applied incorrectly, but not in the case of Blossom Dearie. "Uniquely talented" doesn't do her justice. "Amazing" comes closer. Just loved her work.
I'm 78. I KNEW about blossom as a kid. But somehow I had forgotten about her until I heard her on a radio program out of Cleveland Oh while driving semi one night about 25 years ago; & I have been listening to her via TH-cam ever since I retired. So great!

I was visiting New York at 18yo from Arizona and happened upon Blossom at Bob Soir and fell madly for her. She always made me happy-sad all at once. Touchingly so. You are missed greatly by many of us here in NYC. What a gift you are still! 🎉 😢 Happy and Sad all at once!
What a beautiful song! I feel so lucky that we got to hear Blossom Dearie in NY in 2001 and still think fondly about that night. The entire audience was mesmerized, completely under her spell. I even got to chat with her and thank her after the show. She was a wonderful person and a very talented artist. As a pianist I really appreciate that she chooses each note carefully instead of playing a ton of notes like some jazz players do. She’s a purist and her style is minimalist, but each bite is a real treat and leaves us wanting more.
An abiding regret of my life is that I never got to see/hear Blossom Dearie in person. The lady never played or sang a bad note in the entirety of her career.
I saw Stephane Grappelli live, about a 100 years ago, at the University of Manitoba. It was a very cosy venue and in between numbers, he tell stories. One of them is about how he and his fellow European Jazz musicians used to buy the records their American mentors would cut, and play them, over and over, to learn the riffs. At the time, he played both violin and piano and couldn't make up his mind which to go with. Then he heard an Art Tatum record. "And decided the violin was my instrument," he said. There are good jazz pianists, great jazz pianists, and Art Tatum.
Favorite singer of all time. Lately I want to burn the internet to the ground but then I remember it makes watching videos like this so possible and so easy.
