Japanese Variegated Monstera | Care & Buying Tips for Cuttings | Rare Plant Haul & Unboxing | Ep 42

  • I received some variegated monstera (albo borsigiana type) from Japan. These plants came from monstera_albo on Instagram, who is a wholeseller (NOTE: She only accepts orders of 12 plants or more). This is the first time I've imported from Japan, but they seem to be exporting more rare plants and offer an exciting alternative to Thailand and Indonesia.
    These plants are rooted cuttings, which should not be confused and treated like fully rooted plants. I offer some thoughts on how I plan to care for these cuttings that come with aerial roots and not soil roots. I also discuss things some things to look for when selecting variegated monstera as well as some other odds and ends.

    I think this has a lot to do with what happened to my Philo Painted lady. I’m pretty sure it had areal roots rather than soil roots and I placed her straight in soil and ended up with rot right away. I was able to re root her in Sphagnum moss thankfully but thank you for this information because it makes a lot of sense! Beautiful plants you received 🙌🏻

    Hi! I'm new to your channel, and I love how informative it is!🌱
    I was wondering.. when you cut the aerial roots (or even stem rot), do you let it callous before putting it in water?
    When you transition to soil, do you put the cut part if the stem in the soil? How do you know the stem isn't going to rot any further?
    How do you water the plants that you have in moss? Do you just spray the top, or do you dunk it in water? Do you add fertilizer when watering moss?
    I noticed that you cut your all white buds off nodes- doesn't that mean that that node is spent? Or can there be more than 1 growth per node?

      @LegendsOfMonstera  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree living in Cali makes many aspects of plant care much easier. Yes, the white one may become problematic over time haha

  • @alis49281
    @alis49281 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I found that young aerial roots can be placed in water or soil. Once they become aged they won't do well at all. I also places a growing aerial above a cup of water and it went straight in - this can actually be used to give a plant extra water and nutrients or root a head cutting before you cut it!
    I have to add: I use fertilized water from my aquarium.
    With big cuttings I place it in moss and see where roots come, once it is viable, I cut it. Big cuttings have a lot of nutrients stored in them and they will have more energy if not cut.
    Almost full white plants should get artificial light to make the day longer. It doesn't have to be a plant light, but highly efficient bright LED spots will already help. It should have 100 to 120 Lumen per Watt. This won't change the colour of the plant, but help its energy and health.

    Hi Jimmy! I love your channel it has helped a lot, I have an albo tip cutting with 3 leaves that I popped straight into an aroid mix after watching your previous propagation video. It’s been in soil for over 2 weeks now with no progress and after watching this and learning that long aerial roots struggle to take off in soil im a bit concerned that mine wont take off as it only has one aerial root thats about 15 cm long. Would it be a good idea to pop it in water instead? Thanks 😊

    • @LegendsOfMonstera
      @LegendsOfMonstera  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi man. I’ve had really bad luck with long aerial roots going into soil. I suspect if my mixture were much more airy and well draining, such as like an 80% perlite mix, maybe they would do better? Not sure what you use. If you are concerned, you can always take it out and see what’s going on. If it’s rotting, it surely would show signs by now. If it’s doing fine, maybe you found the right mix for you :)

    Sooooo, I have a question: if I buy a variegated cutting, with a lot of GREEN (which is cheaper) and just a little bit white, will this affect future leaves? Or could they have a lot of white even though the ‘mother’ leave hasn’t?

    • @LegendsOfMonstera
      @LegendsOfMonstera  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's pretty random how the new leaves will be. I tend to go for the 60-70% green, but that's just my preference. More green usually means faster growth and more leaves and more chances to roll the dice haha

    • @LegendsOfMonstera
      @LegendsOfMonstera  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The exact pricing depends on how large the order is. They also only do orders of at least 12 plants. You can order up to 12 plants per shipment without an importing permit in the US. If you want more than 12 plants, you can split it into multiple shipments to get around that restriction. Cheers!

  • @finflwr
    @finflwr 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Light levels do affect the pants decision about how much variagation it can afford to make for it's next leaf, even if it doesn't change the leaves already formed.

    • @emilym155
      @emilym155 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      finflwr no light levels do not effect the genetic mutation within the plant that’s a common misconception, it may help boost growth but it will not directly give more variegation.

    • @finflwr
      @finflwr 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@emilym155 From my personal growing experience, any variegated plant I have grown will give new growth with more green elements in it's variegation patterns if I've had it in a lower light situation. Whereas the lighter elements of the variegation will predominate when I've had it placed in a brighter spot. I've been growing plants for over twenty years now and my personal experience has shown this to be a consistent habit of any variegated plants. Yes, the genetic element of variegation is within the plants cells, but the distribution of chlorophyll within that tendency is something that the plants will decide on an ongoing basis, adapting to it's circumstances. Just this winter I had a variegated pelargonium (Happy Thought Red) that I had to bring inside for overwintering. Pelargoniums grow relatively fast, so it was a very good example. Initially I put it in a quite a shady place (as I became rapidly swamped with all the plants I shouldn't have bought during the summer and now had to fit into my house, lol) and it continued to produce leaves though they were less variegated and some lost the variegation altogether. I then purchased several additional growth lights, whereupon the plant promptly returned to growing it's newest leaves with superb variegation again. I've had countless similar experiences. My Variegated rubber plant that was in a North facing window for most of its life, before I moved it to a couple of feet from a South facing window at the beginning of last year, has completely different variegation in the leaves produced in the two different locations. An increase roughly of about perhaps 10% to at least 30% with increased mint green areas too (happy to share photos of it). Perhaps an experiment is in order using a cheap robust plant that could be split and placed in two different light levels? I move my plants around seasonally as I alternate between putting some plants out for the summer then they have to suffer through the darker winter months here in the UK inside my house. All the variegated plants I've grown for some time show the same tendencies. Perhaps a very loose human parallel is how our skin will produce more melanin if exposed to sun, though our genetic propensity for melanin (yes I know melanin is protective whereas chlorophyll is something else entirely, but they both relate to sun exposure, though with sun they need less chlorophyll and we need more melanin) is unchanged, and we'll become paler again if not exposed to sun? Though our melanin increases quicker, with plants they are on a slower schedule and produce the right levels of chlorophyll needed for their current light levels in their new growth, as they detect the need for change. Perhaps something you can only accept once you see it happen over time. Not obvious to those with perfect permanent homes for their plants perhaps as the plants rarely experience any notable changes..

      @finflwr I think the association with light and variegation probably originated from some plants where light does affect variegation. For variegated monstera though, this is not true. Light affects contrast but not current or future variegation patterns as far as I know and as far as I’ve gathered from much more experienced growers.

      @@LegendsOfMonstera I'll have to conduct some experiments with mine then. But when it's a little bigger than the two leaf baby it currently is ; )

    It's "sphagnum" not "spagnum", so the pronounciation is with an "f".

      Haha I think it depends on the plant. Monstera do very very well for a long time. I suspect 4 weeks is their breaking point.
