The Deer Manager is a short film that takes viewers on a visual journey during the Roe Deer rut in Warwickshire.
Although it was an unusual rut this year due to bad weather, after 9 stalks we were able to generate enough footage to tell the story.
I tend to go in with a very open mind when shooting these and try not to have a strict structure as I am still learning about Deer Management and hunting. I wanted my guide Mark to have the majority of control as I worked around him, as I find that tells a more honest visual story when you're shooting in an observational setting.
The only scene where I had a direct input in terms of getting footage (that wasn't observational) was when the rifle was fired, and when I was on the business end of the rifle. This is simply because I am one man shooting solo, I could either focus on the animal or the shooter (due to physical position and available optics), and as this was my first rut, I wanted to focus on the animal(s) as much as possible to give it as much respect and attention as I could.
While capturing the shooting footage itself, we both made sure the rifle was empty and safe...twice, before proceeding to capture those shots. I framed it out, but the bolt was actually open too, providing another degree of safety.
As a filmmaker and trainee hunter, I would never encourage anyone to replicate those shots UNLESS they're around proficient and trained individuals who have a strict discipline towards firearms safety.

Wow, I'm blown away at this. From the use of a slide action rifle to the suppressor to the actual animal it self. Amazing video. Something you likely wouldn't see in the states, BRAVO. Very impressive.
Thanks for the lovely words! Started this journey into filming hunting and stalking last November and have been in love with it since...big thanks to Mark for being an absolute professional, his discipline and respect for the animals is amazing, a true Deer Manager.

Cheers buddy 🙂 most shots of the Deer you see we were about 40-60ft away from them, so we got pretty close!!!
Moderators reduce your noise profile when stalking on someone else's land, and they don't disturb the wildlife as much, so if you're hoping to get more than one Deer without scaring them all off, a moderator is the way to go 👌🏻
@@RussDixonDOP got it! Thanks for a detailed explanation. The only way for us to be quiet here in Canada is to use bow and arrow, LOL, which I practice a lot. Much longer season as well.
@@sasqwatch35mm I should've said it also helps when firing .243 as you don't really need to wear ear pro and can keep your auditory awareness at the same time.
Bow hunting is illegal here in the UK, my guide loves using a bow but has to do trips to places like Bulgaria in order to get that experience.
