3 Step Natural Window Light Setup using a V-Flat - Super Easy!

  • You may know me as someone who routinely reaches for their studio strobes for portraits, but I also love to work with natural light too!
There's a ton you can do to shape and sculpt with a natural light and today that's what I'm going to show you with this gorgeous portrait lit with window light and a v-flat.
Normally when I do window-lit portraits I will pose my subject facing the window to get a big broad flat light, but today I'm going to use it to emulate 2 light sources. One to give a bit of light on the hair, and the other bouncing off of the v-flat to create a very soft light on the model.
    Ingredients for this look:
    1. A window with in-direct light. We don't want sun pouring in directly, so a cloudy day or a time of the day when there is less direct light coming in.
    2. A backdrop. Here I used a gravity backdrop for a bit more interest, and it helped to also block some of the light.
    3. A white v-flat, or some sort of surface to bounce the light. Additional options could include a bed sheet, wall, piece of foam core etc.
While I call this a "complex" lighting setup because I mimics multiple lights, it's fairly easy to execute.
During this shoot I used the Canon EOS R5 and 50mm 1.2 which helped me to get some shots of the model close up and a bit wider of her dress as well.
What's neat about this combo is that with the electronic viewfinder on the R5 which has exposure simulation to help me visualize the end result, pretty helpful.

I am glad you have these videos. Natural light is also good to shoot practicing product shots also. Give me ideas on personal projects. Thanks.

Oh wow, what beautiful shot! I have to say so many times people miss the good old days of Film Photography but then we see the advances in Digital, in this case how noise free the new DSLR's are currently allowing to shoot at higher ISO's. Thanks for sharing so much great content and ideas Lindsay Adler!

My pleasure. Yes, higher ISO is a godsend for natural light work.

I love your new studio sooooooo much! So much more variety and amazing approaches, both entirely in studio AND some using natural light. 😍 It really is so generous of you putting all these amazing but expensive components together, including the huge studio with all its flexibility, to share ideas with us at no cost on TH-cam. 🙏🏻

Nice work, Ms. Adler. (1) Yes, these modern cameras give really clean files at high ISO. What you are looking at in LR or C1 is the result of "raw processing", however, and I found that LR caused "noise" at ISO=100 and a sunny landscape from my 45MP mirrorless with new original lenses. That "noise" actually was an artifact from that raw processing (the pixel peeping chaotic looking variant of Moiré). My camera brand has a free raw processing application and if I want to check if "noise" is from camera, ISO and circumstances, or from raw processing, I open the photo in that application. In other words, if your photo doesn't look as clean as you hoped, it may just be sub-optimal raw processing. Also, my camera has two electronic amplification levels, I guess your brand too, and in the low amplification approaching the amplification switch, the noise can be higher than at ISO levels above the high amplification switch. This, again, may be a raw processing artifact - I've not been able to refute that idea so far. (The short version: ISO 400 may look noisier than 800 or 1600.)
    (2) I know you know, this, but as intro for comment readers: we have our studio backgrounds and lighting in order to free us from the capriciousness of weather, or local unavailability of certain light, say cloudy, due to the climate we live in. Now you demonstrated this natural/available light setup, it would be nice to demonstrate how to get exactly the same shot - in terms of lighting - in your studio with your strobes and modifiers (with and without the V-flat).

1: I use CaptureOne and have been really happy! But yes, you are totally right. (2) I have this already in my Master Studio Lighting course: lindsayadler.photo/msl

great stuff - for me and my 8 year old canon 700d even 400 ISO handheld is noisy and while some might embrace the noise for giving a certain look I would prefer super clean shots for portraits - perhaps will give it a go on a tripod at 200 ISO and slow shutter speeds see what can do with this approach ! thanks for the ideas!

Beautiful. Thanks for sharing. Would you use a scrim on the window if the light was shining into the room as direct sunlight, and there was not time to delay the shot
