I had Montreal smoked meat 15 years ago when I visited Montreal and I am still craving for it
Shortly lived in New York and being Canadian i have visited Montreal many many times and can say that SMOKED MEAT is the best in Montreal !!! Also you can have the true Poutine topped with smoked meat .... OMG, 2 die 4 !

I moved to Australia 11 years ago. Four things I long for. Wild caught Pacific Salmon. Montreal smoked meat. A&W Teenburgers. Smoked salmon.

Smoked meat Pete is the best! I've lived in Montreal for 40 years. I've had them all.
Ohhh…brings back memories…smoked meat sandwich medium fat and then hit the road to Grand prix …miss it so much
bringing back so many memories. I live in San Francisco now where they kid themselves about being a 'great food' city. Overpriced and nothing nearly this good. If Montreal was sunny and warm year round i would have found it hard to leave.

Proper Montreal Smoked Meat is drugs in meat form! There are so many good places, a must have if you go there on vacation.
Ben's was the place a bunch of us would go to after Parade nights at the Black Watch. The staff always had a table reserved for us and always set up the right number of seats
Smoked meat is God's gift to humanity! Guess where I'll be going next time I'm in town?
Snowdon deli, is an amazing place. The food, the smoked meat, the staff! It’s all Montreal and it’s all on point. 11/10 would recommend.

Jarry's Smoked Meat in St-Leonard is also a must try if your looking for great smoked meat sandwiches. I was recently in Montreal for a few weeks, and I always make the rounds to Schwartz's and others. Jarrys was visited more than once..
and Jarry's is 24hr

Some other places I feel haven't been mentionned here are the Fameux on St-Denis, a chill diner with some very decent smoked meat sandwiches and a nice menu variety, and Reuben's on St-Catherine, also pretty good smoked meat although I personally prefer their Reuben because, well, Reuben's.
Makes me hungry looking at them eat❤❤❤❤I’ll will be ordering there spice at the end of December 😅😊❤
I always start my smoked meat sandwich meal with the 1/4 pickle. Then the cole slaw. And finally, heaven.

Oooofff that Schwartz's - Ripples combo is one of my best memories of going up just 2 minutes away from there. My dad would bring my brother and I there at least once a month.

I agree with the guy who said that, if you can't get into Schwartz's (or even if you can), you should try The Main, across the street.. And, if you do, try their verenikis, basically deep fried pierogies served with some serious carmelized onions and sour cream. Yum!
Those verenikis with carmelized onions sound even better than smoked meat!

Crazy how a smoke meat sandwich is now $16.00+ these days !
When I was a young man, I'd skip the fries and have a 2nd sandwich. Now, I'm a more refined gentleman I order the platter with a stack of bread with a coffee.
That was when a smoked meat sandwich cost less than $4.00, now it's over $10.50 these days !

I'd have to pick Snowdon Deli as my current favorite Swchartz's used to be the one for me, it's a bit dryer and you can taste the beef a bit more. In the last few years, I'd have to say I've enjoyed Snowdon more and even the Main although the Main is on the salty side.
Swchartz is so over rated. I simply don’t understand the hype for it. It’s ok at best. Snowden deli is indeed superior.
My life changed when I tasted Ruben’s sandwich. I cannot wait to go back to Montreal

DEPENDING ON THE WAY THIS GREAT MEAT IS PREPARED AND THE CUSTOMER'S PREFERENCE FOR DRY OR MOIST, THE FLAVOUR IS NEVER TO BE FORGOTTEN. ADHERING TO THAT ROMANIAN RECIPE, ALL ARE GREAT!!
Not going to beat a dead horse but there's several great restaurants for smoked meat in Montreal! But in the USA the best smoked meat sandwich is at the Mile End Deli in Brooklyn, NY!
Unpopular opinion: Main Deli is better than Schwartz because their smoked meat and fries are just as good and there's no long lines.
You may begin crucifying me.

MONTREAL SMOKED MEAT IS ONE OF A KIND ON OUR GLOBE. SOME PLACES ARE WORLD WIDELY KNOWN ,OTHERS ARE AMAZING AS WELL BUT LESS SO. ONE THING'S FOR SURE NOTHING BEATS THIS ICONIC TASTE. THE ONLY WAY TO EAT THIS IS A MEDIUM FAT OR HIGHER, LEAN JUST DOESN'T MAKE THE CUT!!!
We were at Schwartz's when Someone Feed Phil film crew showed up back in 2019
I live in the West Island so it's a trek to get to Swartz's or The Main but sooo worth it!
Same, it had to be a special occasion to go there. I was jealous of my friends who lived nearby.

@@Xloi63 Yeah, Chenoys is ok but it's kind of expensive and too fatty for my taste. The fries are good but I prefer the ones at Main.
The only place close to Schwartz's was Abie's on Sources, but too bad they closed up a couple years back.
@@Xloi63 Chenoy's is nothing close to Schwartz's, even Dunn's is better than Chenoy's as both places use plastic pre-packaged smoked meat they reheat. If you like Chenoy's then might as well go to Celine Dion's other place Nickel's and get a second sandwich for a nickel !

First Time i tried it, i was with friends and thought : Man so Much meat, how did they ate all this. It was 30 years ago. Now i'm used to IT. I only can eat a half sandwich even it's so good. I share it. That why i got dog many friends 🙂. Mtl smoked meat sandwich : it's a must, and it's really cheap.

I am French Canadien if you want Iconic you find out when schwartz's opens And show up (non weekend) 1/2 before they open And you will get in You show up afterwards you will wait 45mins to get in It is pricey due to the tourist And busy always ......However if you want the real Montreal wow factor Go to Dunn's Famous And order a poutine with schwartz deli smoked meat ontop The blend of the gravy And the cheese And smoked meat ...Rustic salty smokey goodness And a cold beer You walk away full And start to understand what Montreal has to offer. Joe Beef is another place ( you need to book it 3 months before ) This place you will really need to open your comfort zone of foods you might not of had before goose liver? Horse meat? If you can over look things you might not ever eat For favor You will get past the reason I been to 60% of Montreal's spots And i don't even live in Quebec
Always go alone at Swartz's , it's very long wait when you are 3 or 4. You can skip the line and have people from all over the planet on both sides of you having the best sandwich they ever had and tripping

There was a strike and it never reopened. Long time patrons also said the quality of the product had declined over the last couple decades unfortunately.

I make my life mission of educating people about how overrated Schwartz's is. That guy in the video got it right, Main in front is way better, but so is Smoked Meat Pete and Lester's and Reuben's and Snowdon and Roi du Smoked Meat and Jarry.... about every place is better than Schwartz's. I gave it so many chances and still I can't make it in my top 10. I guarantee that in a blind test, it would be placed among the least favorites. Schwartz's lovers, please give others place a chance and you'll understand what I mean. The very best was Ben's. RIP
They’re all delicious and that includes Schwartz’s! It’s just a different preparation method and a fattier piece of meat, and more authentic to the way it used to be made in the early 20th century. I’ve had them all and they’re all delicious.

When I say "do I blind test", I mean it because I did with 7 people, 7 out of 7 ranked Schwartz last out of 10 delis. It's good, it's just not the best and lots of people don't give other places a chance and they blindly queue for hours at Schwartz
Five of us did a blind taste test between the Main and Schwartz's, and all five picked the Main. Schwartz's lives off its reputation, and I know plenty of Montrealers who have never even tried Schwartz's, but they still blindly recommend it as the name is legendary now.

As a real Montrealer, it would have been nice to give a lot more time and focus on the other great smoked meat places in the city, rather than overhyping the already booming (algorythm-like) Schwartz's.
These are collage videos. Very few people film their experiences at the lesser-known places, I worked with what I had unfortunately.

Multiple restaurants are featured (there’s just not as much footage as people going to Schwartz though) and I included lots of people who went to the take out line 😂
You really need to disclose that this is sponsored content. The caption is entirely misleading when you open with talking about Bens, The Main, Snowdon etc…but then launch into a full on ad for Schwartz’s. I was a fan of Schwartz’s and have eaten there dozens of times. Then a couple of years ago I took home a vacuum sealed package of medium. I opened it and was disgusted by the amount of fat, gristle (first time in my life and I have no idea where they could have got that from) shredded bits and entirely uneven cuts really thick at one end and shaved thin at the other.
From that moment on it was clear to me that they stopped caring. It’s now nothing but a tourist trap. Ask anyone and they’ll tell you, Montrealers (especially the Jewish community) eat at Snowdon. It’s smoked meat is in fact nicer than Schwartz’s.
Since my bad experience at Schwartz’s I’ve happily made a number of converts to Snowdon . People who know food, know what’s real.
