Hi Wolter! I think you made a little mistake, in the traditional Montréal hot-dog also known as Steamy (or a roteux like we locally say) we don't put sauerkraut in, it's a coleslaw (shredded green cabbage, white pepper, vinegar, salt, sugar, canola oil and depending the place some put celery for the texture but some don't (and, of course, no milk produce and NO fermenting contrary to a sauerkraut). The sauerkraut thingy it's only on specific thematic place you'll find it in Montréal.

      Thanks.
I was going to mention as far as I know among my peers and folks in general, we order deux steamey tout garni.
      That's a bun,hotdog, yellow mustard (French's) diced onion relish(sometimes) and slaw.
      Thats it thats all.
The next best is a "Michigan".
A bun, hotdog, diced onions and a ladle full of med spiced chili sauce, add cayenne pepper for more zip.

Actually I have seen the Sauer-Kraut Hotdogs in several places in Montreal and Sauerkraut contains NO MILK PRODUCT, the lactic acid is based on the Choux's own fermentation, also Choux Croute is excellent to bring down your high cholestrol which you surely have as a mangeur des hot dogs. Also Choux Croute works as a natural Pepto Bismal as it stops Stomach-Burns/Brûlures d'Estomac, so buy good Kühne Weinsauerkraut of less expensive Polish Choucroute( Metro/IGA, or la Bernoise in Kirkland) to naturally heal your stomach burns you surely also have from eating Smoked Meat. Choux Croute for centuries was used against Stomach Burns both in the Plat Alsacien(F) and le Plat Bernois(CH) which are the same..as they shared a common border and even language.

Speaking as a Montrealer, thank you for a fun and fair video. Good of you to mention that Federal and Quebec taxes total 15%of what you eat. Do NOT get suckered into tipping on the amount AFTER taxes. If you tip 15%, then your tip should equal the total taxes.

Another great video on my hometown! Montreal is a foodie's dream come true. There are so many different types of cuisine available, you could put on a blindfold, throw a dart at a map and whatever country it hits, odds are Montreal has at least one place that specializes in that type of food. Food tours are an option, but the easiest to do is self-guided (provided you have good walking shoes): start in Old Montreal and when you reach the Science Center, start walking up Saint-Laurent. It will take you through Chinatown, you'll find some trendy spots after you cross Sherbrooke street, then you'll go through parts of Mile End and the Plateau where Fairmont and St-Viateur are only a block or two away from St-Laurent. As you continue to walk north, you'll get to Little Italy and eventually you'll be near the Jean-Talon market and then you can take the Metro from Jean Talon station back to your lodging. If you're feeling truly brave and your legs don't hate you, walk a few blocks east to Saint Denis and walk southward for more food and drink destinations, where you will eventually end up on the Saint-Denis strip between Sherbrooke and de Maisonneuve streets, where you can't NOT find food or drink. A full day of walking should be just about enough to burn off most of the calories you will take in during your walk. The southwest borough also has some excellent locations for food and drinks, and if you follow the Lachine canal from Old Montreal, you will visit Griffintown, Little Burgundy, Point St-Charles, and Saint Henri, all of which have vibrant food and drink scenes.

Go to L'Express or Lémeac for french food, Les Enfants Terribles at Place Ville Marie for amazing city views, Chinatown for authentic chinese food and vietnamese soup, Vin mon Lapin, Joe Beef and Montreal Plaza for fancy eats, Majestique for oysters and funky decor, and so so so much more!

My fave place to go for a craft beer is the St Ambrose brewery. Especially since it has this random pink house on top a siloh 4 stories up in the air and the brewery itself has a nice vibe by the Lachine canal and is really close. Under a mile from my place. The two other popular cuisines (low budget) are Vietnamese, Portugese (piri piri chicken) and Lebanese. The latter is practically everywhere, but Vietnamese is popular in the Côte-des-neiges and Chinatown (old) districts. The "new" Chinatown sometimes called Chinatown 2 is in the Guy-Concordia district and actually has more east Asian (Chinese, Korean, Taiwanese, Japanese) food than Chinatown does. It is also priced for students, so it is more inexpensive. I've lived in Montreal for over 50 years and don't think I've had poutine once, which won't be that shocking to a lot of Montrealers. It is simply not that popular in the city where there are so many other things.

I have read that the Canadian beer strength thing is a myth. It was based on an old American alcohol rated by weight (ABW) which was less than the now used ABV. So a 4% ABW would actually be a 5% ABV. Most beer is between 4 and 8 percent ABV, which is the same in Canada. Canadians don't make particularly strong beer, despite the common misconception.

    • @louisd.8928
      @louisd.8928 ปีที่แล้ว +10

That depends on the type of beer. If you're talking about run-of-the-mill lagers, those will clock in at the usual 5 %, same as everywhere else. If you start looking into Quebec craft beers, you'll find that 7-8 % is often time the lightest available. Many of the most highly regarded local craft beers are 9, 10, 11 %+.

You'll find every flavor and type of beer imaginable...
According to Wikipedia, Quebec has over 150 micro-breweries offering approximately 3348 different beers (more than double the amount in Belgium)!
Some of these beers have 3x the alcohol of US beers... Now you know lollll
If you go to the SAQ (liquor store), you'll also find imported beers from all over the world (Italy, Belgium, Japan, etc.)

6:15 : This myth about Canadian beer being stronger than US beer needs to be put to rest at last. It was born out of the fact that alcohol contents is measured by weight (ABW) in the US and by volume (ABV) in Canada. And since 4% ABW translates into 4.8% ABV, US Citizens having missed the fact that the measurement units are not the same have jumped to conclusions over time and cemented into minds this unfounded myth that "Canadian beer is stronger". Which just does not compute with the facts.

Really? Have anybody drink 3 American beers, then the next day have 3 canadian beers, trust me, you will find it harder to find the door on the second night, but nice try😂

La Banquise is a tourist trap. It's not a bad poutine but it's far from the best and much more expensive than it's worth. Avoid it.
IMO Chez Ma Tante is the best poutine in mtl but don't over think it. Go to Lafleur or La Belle Province. Get a combo meal 2 steamies, poutine and a pepsi. Real Montreal shit right there.

@@WoltersWorldEats Snowdon is deeply underrated, and not the least bit busy. Lots of flavour and the lean cuts are typically juicier than Schwartz. There's a great Korean-run Japanese restaurant in the neighbourhood too if one wanted to explore more of Canada's most ethnically diverse neighbourhood, Cote Des Neiges. Montreal as a whole is broadly pretty white european in descent but CDN has loads going on, but is more of a biking choice than a walking choice.
