If you’d like to get an idea of what the physical activity will be like and what’s expected of you at depot I’d recommend you attend a “Run With a Recruiter” event hosted by the RCMP in your local community. That's how it was when I went through in 88-89. The "military" aspect of my training has been downplayed a lot since then. It is the toughest 6 months of your life. It you want to ...badly enough to give it all you have...and more, then you will likely graduate. You have to push yourself physically and mentally way beyond what you thought you have in you. Training has to be tough because the career is MUCH tougher.

      Human beings are flawed. It’s interesting that the instructor used the “ hate me” method of teaching. I had an ceramics professor who did the same thing. He made us destroy all of our work. All of it. We hated him! But we did truly bond with our classmates, and many of us are still friends. He was right in wanting us to leave our egos out of our art. A great lesson for life as well. Depot hasn't changed much from this in terms of overall structure. Drill has been toned down slightly (in terms of what they can make fun of you for) but the marching and yelling are the same.
    In my opinion it really is the worst kind of hell you can subject yourself to. It isn't the yelling or the fitness that make it bad; though they do contribute to an extent. It's the lack of modernization and real world application, the field is so much different than what you are taught.
    It is also hard to respect the core values when they aren't following them themselves. There is a lack of individuality and compassion in the program - like be prepared to make it to the end of training with family being booked to come out, your detachment set, your field coach in contact with you, moving booked etc and then get pulled out and sent back 12 weeks or terminated because you fucked up on a scenario. There is little leniency in the program for failure, they won't guide you to succeed or teach you, they will tell you what you did wrong (even if you can articulate you have good reasons for doing so) then completely screw you over.
    In the end you aren't a human being to them at depot or in the field. You are a number. It doesn't change ever. If you come to depot or join the organization thinking you are going to get treated fairly or with respect, or with basic compassion, you won't be.
    The biggest flaw in the RCMP is that they are trying to change the organization from the top down when they need to be changing it from the bottom up. Change the base of the program and modernize it (Depot) and move upwards from there.
    Just my opinion though. Apply go through and see for yourselves. One thing I will say though is if you do make it to depot understand most troops are losing upwards to 10 people now. I would recommend other police forces - better pay, better equipment, better structure, better politics, more modernization, better training.

      Darian Hanquist How do you know Depot is that bad?

    • @johnkerster3278
      @johnkerster3278 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      As an ex-member who went through Depot and "N" Division Ottawa in 1948 I find that from what I have seen and read here I have the belief they still have to make men out of boys. The complainers are usually the ones who don't fit in so blame it on the Org. Today is no different except for more and better equipment more men etc. Esprit de corps was built by working together, suffering together, playing together, for your own satisfaction and your pride at being a member of greatest Police Force. It has had its problems through swift growth, with I'm sorry to say old attitudes in management that haven't kept up to date with rapidly changing social and personal mores of the world. I can also the same about our armed forces who old PET (Pierre Elliot Trudeau)wrecked. If you can't take the heat stay out of the sun! What the public you most often deal with will throw at you is twice as bad as DEPOT. Self-control is paramount so learn and thank Cpl/Sgt for knowing it. Of my squad of 30 only I and, one other are still alive and are often in contact, such is ESPRIT de CORPS. I'm 88+ and he's 93.

      Geez, John, don't the Hell's Angels(and other gangs) embrace "...Esprit de Corps..." and "...working together, suffering together, playing together, for your own satisfaction..." what a coincidence! a comparative of gang mentality. FYI, The Nazi SS maintained a very rigid "Esprit de Corps" and the devastating consequences are common knowledge. The fact that a fellow former officer differs with your perspective certainly creates doubt as to your veracity of facts. Maybe you are both misguided however Mr Darian Hanquist seems to be able to review his recall of his reality with objectiveness, you on the other hand, continue to blurt your rhetoric propaganda (eg: "...still have to make men out of boys...") that is blatantly classic boot-licking. Clearly you are bedazzled and deceived by the silly costumes, shiny badges, ribbons, gang patches, militaristic methodologies, etc. Seems they weren't very successful at turning you into a man, you continue with your boyish drivel some 70 odd years later. It is very disconcerting that you hold your "Esprit de Corps" in preference to public service, the "Esprit de Corps" is exactly what the problem is, (there are other factors as well), serving your gang mentality first, the public second. All your blathering defense will not erase the facts of your police gang being out of control for a very long time. Yes John, you are swimming against the current of truths and facts, all your digressions, deflections and diversions can't change reality. We the people aren't tolerating your type of gang mentality any longer, you and the gang are being exposed daily across the country as the miscreants you all are. Earn some respect, recognize the flaws, they are numerous, or continue with your blind obedience, your choice, sadly you are so far ensconced in your delirious delusions you probably can't conceive of any choice only your warped sense of reality.

      @CrawlSpace it was insanely hard, pushed me to the absolute max, and I think I had a touch of PTSD afterwards. Only a touch. My personality made me stick out and I dont have the typical cop personality so I had it a bit tougher then the average guy. 10 of my troop didn't make it, we didn't have a troop that worked together unfortunately. I'm working in the field now and I got to be honest, I love the job but it's not as glamorous as it seems. It's tough and you have to give 100 percent at all times. No food, 16 hours of max mental effort tough. A large portion of the public will hate you depending on where you are posted and you'll see things that no person should have to see. It will however make you grow as a person and those few times you make a difference it's pretty awesome.
      I hope I answered your question.
