@@uuxxuu5002 RCMP are just trained in Regina, so there isn't much difference compared to other cities. The actual headquarters is in Ottawa, Ontario. After their training they are almost always relocated somewhere else in Canada.
I'll never forget the first Mountie who pulled me over in 1985 for speeding when I was 16 years old in Vernon, BC. He asked me to leave my car full of laughing friends and sit with him in his car while he wrote up the ticket. He treated and talked to me like he was a wise older brother.
What may be interesting is the fact that the Canadian Coast Guard doesn't really deal with anything other then saving lives (Weather its tows or wreaks). Their other duties include Hydrocarbon (oil) response. We let other agencies deal with the others
My Grandpa was in the RCMP and was involved in one of the largest manhunts in RCMP history with his K9. He was interviewed for a book about it. Its cool to see this after hearing the stories he told about training. He said at one point he was so tired he fell asleep with his eyes open. RIP grandpa, miss you.

As an American, with Canadian friends, I can say it's not that their so polite, it's more that most of us are assholes. Politeness is a strange concept to us.
I truly love how the cadets are exposed to things like tear gaz. It really makes them understand the power they can impose on others, and is sure to make them think twice before using it. Go Canada!
Most police academies (at least in the United States) do this in their curriculum, and in the military for MP related jobs. Common things trainees/ recruits have to experience before being certified and authorized to employ are: Pressure points, takedowns, tasers, pepper spray/ tear gas. Instructors make them go through it just to know what it feels like so as to deter them in the future from going 0 to 100. Officers have to endure the effects of tear gas just as much as rioters. The stuff lingers and spreads, any officers dealing with people in the area suffer just as bad too. The only difference is they've trained for it and know what to expect already so they don't panic/ lose focus.

All the jokes aside: This is actually a better police training than most countries offer their officers. Of course it's not comparable to a military boot camp, but neither is the job so I'm fine with that.
I actually think a 26 week training is a little short. Here in germany, the police training takes 24 to 45 months (It depends on which state you want to serve in)

And about practical traing: a Police Cadet in North Rhine-Westphalia has 4 practical courses doing, as you call it "police work". These alone take 36 weeks. Thats 10 weeks more than the WHOLE Police Training in Canada. I'm not saing that Candian police officers are bad. I'm just saing that, at least to me, training seems a little short.

Außerdem ist ein ehemaliger Arbeitskollege im Mittleren Dienst bei der Wasserschutz in HH und ich selbst bin ebenfalls im gehobenen Dienst, allerdings nicht als Polizist tätig. Habe aber privat mehr als genug Einblicke in (zumindest) die Landespolizei Niedersachen u. Hamburg, sowieso den gehobenen Dienst der BRD allgemein. Und ich kann sagen, persönlich finde ich die Ausbildung wahnsinnig an der Realität vorbei, die allgemeine Leistungsfähigkeit der Polizisten nimmt sein Jahren ab und die Ansprüche in der Ausbildung werden seit den 90ern konsequent gesenkt.

Growing up in northern part of Canada, we had some awesome people in the RCMP. They would do a lot for the kids, and I really appreciate that growing up. It made an isolated 230 people shitty community seem not so shitty.

As someone watching from the UK , I have absolute respect for the high standards shown here. It looks to me as one of these times where you learn to pass the training, then you go out and learn to do the job.
i never thought i would hear the accent myself on tv too myself, i found a lot of people in construction or trade work have it. I have a native accent, cree to be exact lol.
My dad used to go fishing in Canada back in the 1950s and early 60s. He said that the mounted police were always very friendly and make sure everybody was enjoying themselves while on vacation there. He said most of the time when they came across a Mountie it was when they were canoeing to a fishing spot and the officer was boating near them.

When I went to Canada, I was asked at the border why I was going in, where I lived and what I did for a living. I was tempted to say, "I'm visiting an Algerian friend of mine, I met in Pakistan in 1997, before going on a hiking trip in Afghanistan." I decided I really did not want to be reported to the FBI. LOL.
As a Canadian myself, I must say I am quite impressed with the quality of this in-depth look at our Mounted Forces. I learned a lot from it and I'm sure the Mounties themselves are proud of what was done here.
@Charles Duff As an American, I have to say that the instructors seem to be relatively polite to the recruits compared to, say, a U.S. Marine Corps drill instructor. Don't get me wrong, I have a lot of respect for the RCMP.
They completely left out the PDU (police driving unit). By far the most enjoyable part of my training. Also, not much info on the classroom aspect which is a huge part of the schedule. Not glamorous enough I suppose lol

As a combat veteran of the US military, I am rather impressed with the level of realistic training provided to these officers at the same time of maintaining a respectable work culture that is very hard to achieve. Many law enforcement agencies could benefit significantly from creating similar training programs. Their PM may be a tool but the Mounties appear to have their shit together, also props for the unbiased gender training.
This was a propaganda piece. They do not, if fact, have anything together. They are viciously mean and always have some scandal going. And they’ll take your guns in a heartbeat. I’ve worked with them as a Grunt myself. They’re as unprofessional as they come.

Diversity shouldn't even matter when it comes to looking for a good job or serving the country. If you're a part of the lgbt community (aka being a boy kisser like that furry meme that's trending rn) (alternatively a physically or mentally handicapped person) but still have a good amount of competence enough for the job you're looking for? Good. If you're not competent enough? we wont give you that spot. A good approach is to never give them a free pass just because of their diversity/disability, that pass should always be for the people that have the skill for the job they want even if one of them kiss men and have a genetic disease or is a disabled person. Skill comes first before their looks. But i guess the workspace treats them like the other end of the 'never judge a book from its cover' quote. We get our traditions and some regimental names from the British but we command our own forces.
As a former peace officer, I always enjoy watching videos like this. I look at the Canadian Mounties much in the same way as I do with the Texas Rangers.
Mounties are unique as they are in every province, Canada has no version of the FBI - just officers who work on federal cases. So you get Mounties who are average county police officers, some who work on provincial cases and others on federal. This also allows great communication when a major national issue is taking place like a hunt for killers spanning many provinces. I do see some similarities with attitude and respect that the rangers hold too.
Once when Grant McEwen was the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta a university in California asked him to come down and give the commencement address. He agreed to do so. Because he represented Alberta and Canada the Alberta government thought that it would look good for him to be accompanied by two RCMP officers in ceremonial dress. He got on a jet accompanied by two Mounties. Two women saw this. One woman said"what do you think he did". The other woman said"I think that he is a bank robber". The other woman said"No, he looks more like a white collar criminal". They thought that he was an American criminal being returned to the USA by the Mounties.

Dude, this is incredibly insightful! There are other ways to train cadets! The principle of kindness and positive motivation v.s. screaming and breaking the cadets... So many other military forces need to take notes! It is crystal clear that they are all becoming sharp, competent, highly skilled, and compassionate HUMANS. Sometimes, kindness and positivity are all people need to find their real inner strength and inner self. They are creating true leaders and people that I would trust to serve and protect me
I just got a ton of respect for these men and women. Serving in any profession takes certain kinds of people. And they are special for even choosing this career field.
I've known some of them and have no respect whatsoever. Although I must say they're really good at dressing up in their *&#@ red serge and presenting trophies. And they're good at harassing innocent people and minorities...

I had Cpl Neufeld as my drill instructor and he was absolutely amazing. I can still remember all the boards and 4 corners and pushups he made us do haha
My friend MacKenzie joined the Mounties, but when they told him he would have to relocate from Mississauga to the far north he said, "I'll have Nunavut." He now mops floors at Tim Hortons in Willowdale.
He should have stuck it out. Those places are limited duration postings and your get more input into where your next posting will be. He should gone for the OPP instead of the RCMP he would have stayed closer to home

Although I graduated a few years back now, I had the same facilitators and drill staff seen in this. A few changes to Depot since. Spending better part of 6 months at Depot and experiencing everything it had to offer, I can say its some of the best police training in the world. As the world of policing evolves at a rapid pace, the RCMP as a whole is a doing a much better job at keeping pace since years past. Its a shame to hear recruit applications are way down, to the point of having not enough to fill spots. Do those who are looking into it, its a tough process before, during and after training. But currently as a 4+ year constable with an excellent schedule, benefits for my family, some off the best time off in any job and $100K+ year salary not including edp and OT. Its all been worth it. You see a lot, experience a lot and go through a lot but I wont change it for anything. Not to mention we in the RCMP have a ton of career paths that municipal just cant match!
Also to those looking to sign up, note that part of the job includes taking away the human rights of your fellow citizens, especially natives, and you might end up facing discrimination by your higherups, or have to go along with the discrimination you see your colleagues enforce on the same people you’re supposed to be protecting and serving
Well that drill instructor has to make sure that the cadet understands that they did a wrong thing so they don’t do it again regardless of whether it is disrespectful to the animal or not.
Well I like the Commanding Officers attitude about they are here to SERVE their Communities rather than dominate them. That’s a start in the right direction for new police.
Yeah except the RCMP just sit there on highways and construction sites (at odd hours when nobody is working) with radar like highwaymen to give out tickets. Pretty epic. Seems it gets done at least once for every troop to experience. When I was in my Basic Training for the US Army, our Senior Drill Sergeant did the same with his Campaign Hat AKA Brown Round. Unfortunately, that is a rare thing to see and my platoon paid a heavy price. Still pretty cool to see an RCMP tradition. Laugh every time. Such finesse. Very artistic and entertaining. Bravo Zulu.
So far the RCMP have never failed to be respectful and professional in my interactions. I hope they continue to hold this high standard. City police shouldn't exist in Canada, There should only be RCMP.
Let's be honest, it wouldn't be a Canadian boot camp...if the training didn't take place during winter And I love how the assistant commissioner is self-aware that the Canadian police is more polite than everyone else. But he has a point, if the police are friendly to each other, then when they're out and talking to victims/suspects it would calm them down as well in order to not build even more stress on an already stressful situation.

I was lucky enough to attend the graduation ceremony for my brother, and was at Depot this past year to lay my uncle to rest, who retired an Inspector after more than 25 years of service. The video was very good, and one thing they missed was the water training; it’s intense.
My dad works in Bonnyville Alberta. He went there for a months and then he graduated. My mom was so proud of my dad. It was before I was even born in. It was also made in the 1800s.

🇨🇦Last month I sat beside a young man on a flight to Regina, on his way to the Depot as a cadet. He is 30 years old and a former nurse. A lot of the cadets did a different job before they were accepted. The RCMP has its root in our military. Our military officer cadets wear a similar red wool tunic as dress uniform. I have a kid who graduated from our military college. Many of the traditions, training, and policy are the same.
The first guy had to learn how to shed his Canadian politeness.

I truly love how the cadets are exposed to things like tear gaz. It really makes them understand the power they can impose on others, and is sure to make them think twice before using it. Go Canada!
Most police academies (at least in the United States) do this in their curriculum, and in the military for MP related jobs. Common things trainees/ recruits have to experience before being certified and authorized to employ are: Pressure points, takedowns, tasers, pepper spray/ tear gas. Instructors make them go through it just to know what it feels like so as to deter them in the future from going 0 to 100. Officers have to endure the effects of tear gas just as much as rioters. The stuff lingers and spreads, any officers dealing with people in the area suffer just as bad too. The only difference is they've trained for it and know what to expect already so they don't panic/ lose focus.

All the jokes aside: This is actually a better police training than most countries offer their officers. Of course it's not comparable to a military boot camp, but neither is the job so I'm fine with that.

Here in germany, the police training takes 24 to 45 months (It depends on which state you want to serve in)

And about practical traing: a Police Cadet in North Rhine-Westphalia has 4 practical courses doing, as you call it "police work". These alone take 36 weeks. Habe aber privat mehr als genug Einblicke in (zumindest) die Landespolizei Niedersachen u. Hamburg, sowieso den gehobenen Dienst der BRD allgemein. Und ich kann sagen, persönlich finde ich die Ausbildung wahnsinnig an der Realität vorbei, die allgemeine Leistungsfähigkeit der Polizisten nimmt sein Jahren ab und die Ansprüche in der Ausbildung werden seit den 90ern konsequent gesenkt.

Growing up in northern part of Canada, we had some awesome people in the RCMP. They would do a lot for the kids, and I really appreciate that growing up. It made an isolated 230 people shitty community seem not so shitty.

My dad used to go fishing in Canada back in the 1950s and early 60s. He said that the mounted police were always very friendly and make sure everybody was enjoying themselves while on vacation there. He said most of the time when they came across a Mountie it was when they were canoeing to a fishing spot and the officer was boating near them.

As a combat veteran of the US military, I am rather impressed with the level of realistic training provided to these officers at the same time of maintaining a respectable work culture that is very hard to achieve. Many law enforcement agencies could benefit significantly from creating similar training programs. Their PM may be a tool but the Mounties appear to have their shit together, also props for the unbiased gender training.
This was a propaganda piece. They do not, if fact, have anything together. They are viciously mean and always have some scandal going. And they’ll take your guns in a heartbeat. I’ve worked with them as a Grunt myself. They’re as unprofessional as they come.

We get our traditions and some regimental names from the British but we command our own forces.

As a former peace officer, I always enjoy watching videos like this. I look at the Canadian Mounties much in the same way as I do with the Texas Rangers.
Mounties are unique as they are in every province, Canada has no version of the FBI - just officers who work on federal cases. So you get Mounties who are average county police officers, some who work on provincial cases and others on federal. This also allows great communication when a major national issue is taking place like a hunt for killers spanning many provinces. I do see some similarities with attitude and respect that the rangers hold too.

Dude, this is incredibly insightful! There are other ways to train cadets! The principle of kindness and positive motivation v.s. screaming and breaking the cadets... So many other military forces need to take notes! It is crystal clear that they are all becoming sharp, competent, highly skilled, and compassionate HUMANS. Sometimes, kindness and positivity are all people need to find their real inner strength and inner self. They are creating true leaders and people that I would trust to serve and protect me

Although I graduated a few years back now, I had the same facilitators and drill staff seen in this. A few changes to Depot since.
Spending better part of 6 months at Depot and experiencing everything it had to offer, I can say its some of the best police training in the world. As the world of policing evolves at a rapid pace, the RCMP as a whole is a doing a much better job at keeping pace since years past. Its a shame to hear recruit applications are way down, to the point of having not enough to fill spots. Do those who are looking into it, its a tough process before, during and after training. But currently as a 4+ year constable with an excellent schedule, benefits for my family, some off the best time off in any job and $100K+ year salary not including edp and OT. Its all been worth it. You see a lot, experience a lot and go through a lot but I wont change it for anything. Not to mention we in the RCMP have a ton of career paths that municipal just cant match!
Also to those looking to sign up, note that part of the job includes taking away the human rights of your fellow citizens, especially natives, and you might end up facing discrimination by your higherups, or have to go along with the discrimination you see your colleagues enforce on the same people you’re supposed to be protecting and serving

Fun Fact to all the non Canadians here the provinces Ontario and Quebec don't have a RCMP serving them, they have their own provincial police force. Edit: I from Toronto I know that large municipalities have their know police force

When I was in my Basic Training for the US Army, our Senior Drill Sergeant did the same with his Campaign Hat AKA Brown Round. Unfortunately, that is a rare thing to see and my platoon paid a heavy price.

And I love how the assistant commissioner is self-aware that the Canadian police is more polite than everyone else. But he has a point, if the police are friendly to each other, then when they're out and talking to victims/suspects it would calm them down as well in order to not build even more stress on an already stressful situation.

I was lucky enough to attend the graduation ceremony for my brother, and was at Depot this past year to lay my uncle to rest, who retired an Inspector after more than 25 years of service. The video was very good, and one thing they missed was the water training; it’s intense.

🇨🇦Last month I sat beside a young man on a flight to Regina, on his way to the Depot as a cadet. He is 30 years old and a former nurse. A lot of the cadets did a different job before they were accepted. The RCMP has its root in our military. Our military officer cadets wear a similar red wool tunic as dress uniform. I have a kid who graduated from our military college. Many of the traditions, training, and policy are the same.
