Why not look to Hapkido? The founders of both Aikido (Morihei Ueshiba) and Hapkido (Choi Yong-sool) studied under Takeda Sōkaku of Daitō-ryū. As a long time martial artist (and Aikido blackbelt), I have used it to control people, but the techniques are low percentage. Breaking bones with the ballistic application of locks is higher percentage but ethically and legally dubious. By far the best option is to not be in the same room.
As a Taekwondo practitioner, I have also just begun learning Aikido (chose this over other Japanese martial arts). It felt like a really good complement. And it is based on self defense, rather than just fighting.
@@baldieman64when ye do Judo and Aikido, ye actually basically cover what Hapkido ahould teach ye about unarmed fighting. But armed fighting is another issue of course.

for people asking why someone would hold onto your hand like that these techniques were developed to counter someone holding a bladed weapon so, in essense he's holding onto him since that's better than getting sliced aikido isn't meant for unarmed combat; you have karate and jujutsu for that
I think that aikido is cool, but only if you mix up some moves with something more attacking. You must be a true master to counter *EVERY* move your opponent does, and if you can’t, you are beaten. But Aikido is quite a young martial art, so, who knows, maybe a prodigy will be born one day.

All these moves are negated by you're opponent simply letting go of your wrist and the last arm lock was useless because he simply could've shoulder rolled out of it
The idea is by the time the opponent lets go the necessary kuzushi to throw already exists. Can't deny your last point as he could definitely roll out of it.
Serious question... WHat if they just let go and start striking? Obviously beginner stuff, but if someone was bending my arm backwards using their arm that i have grabbed on to, first instinct is to disengage.
So obviously it's a really slowed down and basic move, but a real world application would take place much quicker, when someone grabs at you like that at the /very/ beginning of that grab they are moving forward as they had to reach to you for the grab, you'd have to capitalize on that initial movement on their part and make it so that in that moment of forward momentum they have you turn and throw them off balance.
The grab is intended to control the defender, if it was combined with a pull the control would be compromised because the defender can move forward and overbear the attacker. Aikido techniques are frequently based on sword movements. It is more applicable in cross hand grabs: attacker's right hand grabbing the defender's right hand. The attacker would push to prevent the defender drawing his sword. Tai no henko is an exercise, but the movement is found in almost every Aikido technique, the defender takes control away from the attacker and doesn't let him re-establish his balance before the throw or the immobilization is conpleted
The teacher's arm is tronger than the student arm. It is why he can defeat the student. If a weak person who got attacked by a strong man , how could he fight back if his arm is weak? Thank you.

Hey Kung Fu, there are a few things in aikido that are ok, but this instructor doesn't seem to be experienced in practical situations. Stick with your KF.Peace
Why do we never see an aikido fight. It's always one guy giving his arm and the other doing sone kind of technique. Why no aikido sparring. It's the strangest thing. Like a dance with strick rules. If the bad guy and the good guy are aikido black belts, nothing would happen or they would have to use a different martial art. Can aikido work against aikido? Are there any aikido championships? How can you get a black felt in a self défense art when you can only be effective against another aikido person acting a certain passive way? Why would I want to learn modern aikido? Certainly not to defend myself because I would never be pressure tested and never trained to actually fight. So us aikido a self défense system or is it a wellness system. It has to be the latter, which is fine but should be presented that way. I really do not like that it teaches knife défense because it gives false confidence. They should be told to always run from a knife because they are not trained for real fighting. False confidence is more dangerous than knowing nothing. I think aikido lost it's real fighting ability somewhere along the way historically. But, hey, it's nice to watch their choreographed demonstrations, but it has very little to do with fighting and self défense. What's with all the bowing? Please tell me if, in your mind, if aikido has anything to do with self défense in a practical way. Does it teach how to defend against a real attacker. If there is no sparring then the answer is no. Bring in a kick boxer to test yourselves every so often, so you know you are on the right track. If I would see an aikido, guy fighting a kick boxer and be effective, I would have a new level of respect for it.
Yes Aikido is a very effective fighting system as any other system once it's applied in a functioning manner in a real combat situation. Aikido however is more a counter offensive fighting art and relies heavily on momentum and leverage as it's main component of application.
In a realistic fighting situation many of the throws and redirecting of an attacking opponents energy requires applying a shocking strike in order to be realistically effective. So aikido has it's punches and kicks knees and elbows strikes that are applied in order to make the follow up throws and joint locks possible.
Like every fighting system once the Hollywood movie magic bullshanoodle is tossed out and the structure and mechanics are competently taught said systems techniques both offensively and defensively are on point.
The bowing is the thanks we martial artist show to our fellow learners in first parking our egos at the door. The bowing is also assuring that we as practitioners will not seek to deliberately hurt one another out of respect for each others well being. Lastly bowing is giving thanks to the he or she who has put themselves in my hands to allow me to develop my skills and combat experience and vice versa. Respect is key.
I'll conclude by saying that in my years of studying aikido the incorporating of a similar concept art also increases the dynamic of the art. I have found Wing Chung and Small Circle Jujitsu very helpful in increasing the effectiveness of aikido in both practice and real fight dynamics. Be safe and be well.
