Vladimir Samsonov played under the real flag of the Republic of Belarus in this tournament, and what is now, for 2024, is the flag of Soviet Belarus.
If Waldner played in todays era he would get defeated 11-0 as the game is so fast n compact now. He would have no chance.

?王励勤发球违例?抛高不够16cm?一直这样?
Wow
Towards the end of the 90s more and more players figured out Liu's services. Of course that was critical for him because it was his primary weapon. After a final act of force in the 99 world singles, his performance dropped dramatically. Motivation issues may also have been an issue.
the hidden services actually makes the games more attractive to watch. And also the 38mm ball. Sadly few people understand this.
the new rules destroyed table tennis for me i loved the 21 rules and 38mm ball.
In principal, the idea of calming down the service is good. The problem I have with the rules at hand is that they are too difficult to judge, and rules that can't be judged are useless at best.
Всё таки Валднер самый великий теннисист в мире. Он фактически уровнял подачу и приём. Сделал приём активным. Чем сейчас пользуються все теннисисты.

All though I'm sure Ding Song has mastered every type of shot in the game, he is a chopper (defender), not an all-around player, as stated by the commentator. Great match though.
Wang prime I think would beat Waldner Prime. However, it's still very hard to compare since the rules and the game has changed so much.
Wang in Waldner's era would have a career similar to Ma Wenge. His backhand and serve receive would have been exposed by Europeans even more.
When was Waldner's peak?`He still plays really well here, but when did he play his best?
Around the 1992 Olympics. He was clinical in 1997 but past his peak.
1989-1992.
Probably here in 1997. He was ranked number one and won the World Championship without losing a single set in the Tournament.
5:55 wait what, a backhand serve by Waldner?
Los chinos le tenían un terror a waldner ...por años les dio sus buenas palizas...
Maby swedens best atletic of all Times...
Yang Ying is cute !!
Waldner is the GOAT in service skills. I wonder if Waldner's service skills changed the game from 21 points/5 service opportunities to 11 points/2 service opportunities?
Wow ! Karlson powerful player
The commentators are so boring, they say nothing of value.
Service had big advantage back then with hidden rules
That's Wang Chen , formerly ranked #4 in the World.
I wondered how they allowed a white t shirt to Waldner (the greatest player ever in table tennis) but soon realized in a closer view that its an orange ball
王励勤吃球吃饱了
but seriuously wang made his way. Isnt he considered one of the best players of all time after that? Come On, this was a kid
3:39 wtf
Table Tennis rules of this era was better I cant stand the new era rules and regulation and changes.
Woldner vs wank le king 😂
I ONLY wish i started playing with pips back in 97, i remenber here i Chinese player using tsp pips, but most of players using pips in backhand were using tibhar and yasaka. After seeing the results of ito and Mattias Falck i now that player like Johny can have a future , i tink that on sweden are some Young promisses usiing short pips
Still have this game on a VHS tape!!!!!
Yoooooo Henstridge!!
wang liqin looks like a Korean, face and hairstyle
Это было круто
Time flies, 22 yrs ago.
This video would've been much more enjoyable if the announcers didn't talk as much (especially during points)
老瓦👍
Wang Li KING superb
Where is that famous WL straight arm loop? Must have not been fully developed yet.
This sport has changed so much since then. Waldner by far the best player of his era and Ma Long the best player of his era imo. So many fantastic players between including Ma Lin, Wang Hao and this player Wang Liqin and the europeans Timo Boll and Vladimir Samsonov.
Ma long is boring compared to waldner... A lot..
@@Bxrzoiin general the game became boring after they removed the spin in order to accommodate silly audiences.
@@NoSpeechForTheDumb I don't agree. The game now is way more atletic....its fast...bh banana, bh chopblocks, fh chopblock even more coming.. reverse pendulum/ hookservices.....Truls, Felix, Fan, Calderano are spectacular to watch and a lot of exciting games with tension to the very end...EK Sweden, Olympic games, Master Stuttgart and in China lots of spectators too.
@@klaasparlevliet2952 no athleticism of the world and no weird technique can compensate for the loss of spin by speed glue ban and the big plastic balls. That's why you have so many "interesting" long rallies today: Everything is simple now.
@@NoSpeechForTheDumb 70 to 75 percentage of points is in first 4 strokes...10 to 15 percentage stroke 5 and 6...so there are not many long rally's in general and if there are they are most of the time very word watching. If you look at tabletennis from 30/40 years ago its a lot of unforced errors and misreading serves ( because of rules) Quality of the game now is much higher; plastic balls or not...some people have a certain need to romantisice earlier times.....
The Legend. Still growing tree!
Since when can you play in a white shirt? Oh orange ball.
What? Wang LEAKING??? That's hilarious!!!
Well look at how it's spelled, I think that was a simple mistake.
Lee-King
この頃のワルドナーと今の俺、どちらが強いのだろうか?考えさせられる💦💦
Респект
Respect to these greats, FIVE world championships between these two guys.
Doesnt JO have 6 himself?
@@samba2782 Sorry if I was not precise, I meant World Championships, not junior, not world cup, not other events.
@@samba2782 WTTC is the tournament that determines the best player every 2 years. WTTC is where all the good players will participate and the hardest TT tournament to succeed.
@@samba2782 no mate, waldner 2 singles 1989 and 1997 and Wang 3 titles
Waldner does have 2 WTTC in singles and 4 in teams.
Haha, I like how they bad mouth the Chinese player, you don't do that anymore. Ha ha today when a European player loses, you credit them by saying …"they're good, they play hard, yes they have a good back hand..."
I felt very sorry for liqin in 2004 olympics when he was forced to throw he match against wang hao because the chinese thought hao had better chance against waldner, though waldner didnt reach final and everything it became a throwback on the chinese with ruy min winning and then also liqin beat waldner for bronse.
Hm, nice beat with Waldners pure mistake in serve. That timeout was actually the only way to break the Waldners song
That was obviously a scripted match. Chinese team orders.
Definitely!
No such need for the final.
OMG, the mispronunciation of Wang Liqin's name. Goodness gracious.
they mispronounced Waldner's name too. these announcers are pretty terrible
Vang Lee king 😂
王励勤若い。。。
Very boring Compared to 2018
I don't think so. The real TT game should be like this. The 40mm ball took spins away from TT.
If Waldner's game or Liquin's is boring for You, You dont know what TT is
