I have been waiting for 27 years to see this Thank you so much. Swedish television only showed a fiew points from this match back then great game by Samsonov.
Flashback in time, thanks for a great upload, two European legends. 🙏 Such a treat to see the original babyface assassin Samsonov beat Waldner at home in Sweden.
The commentary is the worst I've ever heard. Doesn't know the name of the shots (not every offensive shot is a "smash") and Waldner's name is pronounced Yan, not John.
@@olaniyi570The worst commentary is Bobrow-the king of cringe- screaming like a little girl and coming up with some ridiculous nicknames. They often had some great co-comentators like former World Champion and coach Stellan Bengston as opposed to a basement player who obsesses over chop blocks and trickshots.
"Samsonovs serves very, very unorthodox..." Yeah, it was back then and still is very, very unorthodox to see such legal serves with a straight upward toss and no hiding. 😉
And nobody stretches along the table's edge before the serve, which seems to have become a standard in the modern game, I still don't know why. Back in 90s, I had an opportunity to be an umpire at national events.
I am surprised that one of the greatest players in the history of the sport, Jan-Ove Waldner, made so many unforced errors. Of course, the guy has a lot of success and maybe he had a weaker day, but he really gave away a lot of points for free to Vladi.
Yeah he’s pretty clueless and someone must have told him that he was also pronouncing Belarus incorrect. Shows how unworldly we all were just 30 years ago
Worst commentary ever!"John-Ove Waldner". The baseball anouncer doesn't know the name of the shots (not every offensive shot is a "smash") and Waldner's name is pronounced Yan, not John. That's priceless. They also forgot to mention that Waldner won Gold in the 89 World championships.
Two years later Waldner defeated Samsonov in straight games, 3-0, at the world championships, at the age of 32. Waldner played much more aggressively, third ball attacks, and attacking Samsonov's serve. Samsonov was overwhelmed. You only beat Waldner once, then he seeks revenge.

It's strange that the white shirts alright for the refere. My is always told that you can't wear white shirts because of the white ball. Very strange to see that on this high level it isn't a problem at all.

wow. nice
Samsonov was the new top player when I started table tennis. Such an incredible player

For me Samsonov had one of the best hands in the game.
more than a decade on the top ten, a truly legend
Coverage is better than current WTT matches. Better angle, editing, lighting and even commentary
todays camera angle basically makes matchs unwatchable
I complained about frame-rate for so many years they finally banned me. Now it's bad angles, jump-cuts on service, unsynched audio...
The commentary is the worst I've ever heard. Doesn't know the name of the shots (not every offensive shot is a "smash") and Waldner's name is pronounced Yan, not John.

Tons of Thank you for uploading this great moment !
Best feminine serves style Award goes to SAMSONOV

Samsonov's service hasn't changed since than
It actually did, no more hiding the contact point.
@@Lime-zd6js If you notice Samsonov wasn't hiding the ball, it was JOW who did.

It amazes me that commentators don't take time to learn how to pronounce the names of the players.
Especially names from Eastern block 😉
I think at that time Samsonov was more talented than Waldner he was unbelievable 🥺😟

Waldner....One of the best players ever, yet he has an incredible amount of unforced errors. Very frustrating to look at
Waldner at his best was one of the greatest but his form can dip
Great match but the American commentator is extremely annoying. Such an artificial voice
