Corelli's “Sonata con Aboé” (Sonata with Oboe), his first and last piece for oboe, is rarely performed on oboe. Given the date of composition and the evolving nature of oboe design during Corelli's time, it remains uncertain which specific type of oboe he had in mind when composing this piece. For this recording Nele Vertommen performed on a copy of Richard Haka's instrument listed in the Rijksmuseum as oboe/shawm. This transitional instrument delivers a vibrant, resonant sound that beautifully complements the spirit of the music, while
Corelli's contemplation of using the trumpet as an alternative instrument hints at his desire for a more robust and dynamic sonic expression in this composition.

About the oboe (from CD booklet):
It is uncertain what type of oboe Corelli had in mind when writing this piece, as the instrument was still in development from the shawm to the later baroque oboe. The oboe used for this recording (15-19) is a copy of such a transitional model made around 1685 by Richard Haka (1645/6-1705). The flared bell of this instrument creates a very open, festive, trumpet-like sound, whereas the bore of the top joint is almost identical to the later baroque oboes Haka made at the end of his life. That Corelli suggested the trumpet as alternative instrument for this work in C or D major, implies that he was indeed looking for a bright and open sound. This instru- ment seems to fit the piece very well, since the music lies perfectly in line with the possibilities of this instrument.
