    While the song is dark, it does have a hopeful ending, the lyrics in the chorus change from the past tense (implying that it's too late to make a change in their lives) to present/future tense, suggesting they are looking forward to tomorrow and experiencing life. Even the very last sentence in the chorus that's almost identical ("I couldn't wait till I got home to pass the time in my room alone") changes meaning from a depressing implication of going back to you room and closing off from the world to a more uplifting one ("I CAN'T wait till I get home), meaning that going back to your room and spending time alone is not necessarily a negative thing now - it's just something you do with your time.

    The best part about this song, is that the context the lyrics are written in at the last chorus, suggest he ended up staying alive and didn't end his life. Which, I think is a clever way to create a silver lining in such a dark and sad song.

  • @SherylandFam

    Mark is the one singing. He is the base player and lead singer. He wrote this song during a dark time of his life so that is why it is so deep. Another dark song is "Stay together for the kids" which is a song Tom (guitarist and lead singer) wrote because his parents split up on his 18th birthday. He came home that day to his dad leaving. Blink 182 is my favorite band. I can relate some way to every single song they have ever written.

      I think this song and Blink with what they brought to the music industry overall is also very generational (Im 37) and so the nostalgia hits damn hard! I have a handful of songs like these (from rap to rock/pop) that I like to hear just to get the nostalgia vibes on haha! I loved Blink so much back in my teen years

    blink-182 is a 3 piece pop punk that blew up in the late 90's, Mark Hoppus (bass/ lead vocals), Tom DeLonge (guitar/lead vocals) and Travis Barker on drums is prob the most famous member of the band. Mark sings on Adam's Song. I think you the next song you should check out by them is Not Now which is sung by the other singer Tom, its a pretty deep song.
    Also the funny thing about blink is they're widely known as the goofy pop punk band esp for their music videos like What's My Age Again? where they run around naked and All The Small Things where they poke fun at all the boys band of the late 90s
    But yea these other songs by them, Not Now (sung by Tom), Stay Together For The Kids (where both Mark and Tom trade off vocals), I think you will enjoy those songs

    • @Atticus711
      @Atticus711 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      What's My Age Again is actually really depressing at it's core. It's about losing someone you love because of your inability to grow up. I'd say 90% of their discography is actually very melancholic if you listen closely enough. The magic is that it all just seems silly when it's actually really heavy when you dig beyond the surface.

    • @mestupkid211986
      @mestupkid211986 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's funny you mention not now, because Adam's Song is Mark's depression, and not now is Tom's.

    This song was my song when I first tried to commit suicide! Not because of the song, but due to some really heavy depression! After I got back home from the hospital I listened to it again and finally heard the end of the song and understood it was a hopeful song then! It helped me get stronger against the depression! I owe Blink alot!

  • @sevpha1259
    @sevpha1259 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    This song is about how depression was hitting Mark after coming back from touring with the bands and coming home to nobody, while Tom and Travis had girlfriends to come home too. After a while he pushed through and like the song says, life really does hold much better days.

    loved this! since blink is back on tour now, mark (who wrote the song), likes to give a bit of a speech when they play this song live. a few years ago he suffered cancer and lived through it. so, he likes to talk about how adams song has such an added meaning after that experience, and that it really shows what he’s been through

    Blink 182 has two lead vocalists. they sing together sometimes but mainly have solo songs like this one. Mark hoppus is the one singing this song. Tom Delonge is the other singer, he sings the majority of blinks songs. I guess Tom is technically the lead vocalist but they both have leads. There are three members total. Mark, Tom, and Travis Barker.

    I grew up on rock music, particularly pop-punk, but I eventually started listening to classic rap (2pac is my favorite) when I got older. I found the transition from punk to rap very seamless because there were a lot of similarities, just presented in a different way.

    Adam’s song is a suicidal note a fan (Adam) wrote to the band.

    There is a call back to another song called Come As You Are by Nirvana. In that song Kurt Cobain sings:
    Take your time, hurry up
    The choice is yours. Don’t be late.
    And in Adam’s Song, Mark sings:
    I took my time, I hurried up
    The choice was mine. I didn’t think enough.

    Blink was just starting to pick up steam as a band and seeing major success, so they were touring all over the world for months on end. Mark was missing home but also realizing he had no one to come home to, his band mates had girlfriends waiting for them at the airport but he felt like he had no one. And feeling that way while also feeling like he can’t be complaining while the band is blowing up put even more depression on him. When he wrote the song he thought it was too dark for blink but Tom and Travis both supported him and wanted the song to go the album. It’s kind of crazy that the song was almost left off the album because it has helped so many people. It’s totally an ANTI suicide song, so when people misinterpreted it as a negative song they released a statement about what the song meant.

    Yeah I’m still mourning my oldest sister who died 3 months before I was born and basically shaped my life because I was born messed up because I remember the nightmares my mom had those 3 months when I was in the womb, I was always a tortured soul which is why I had my first suicide attempt in the 3rd grade and was institutionalized for the first time

    Brother i love this video for alot of reasons. But the biggest one is hard to explain. I am a white man who grew up in central kansas. Racism isnt exactly rampant here, but it does exist. A part of that racism around here is the idea that black people only listen to rap or hip hop. I know this isnt true. One of my best friends is a black man. He is smart, funny, loyal, and the kind of guy id want at my side for anything. Me and him often times sit together and hot box the car and listen to music. We both love breaking down lyrics and songs. And he would ask me to play blink and sum 41 and all my other punk rock bands and he just vibes out to it and can break it down to me in ways i never thought of, from angles i never saw.
    You did the same here, right off the bat, i have never heard Blink compared to Tupac but the moment you did it i fully caught on to the similarities.
    Love your insights bro. Good reaction.
