- Tourists abandoned their tables as protesters squirted them with water guns in Spain. It happened in Barcelona which is a hugely popular tourist destination. It's just the latest reaction to the phenomenon of overtourism. The number of Americans heading to Europe this year is up 34% compared to last year. Barcelona, which has a population of 1.7 million, had more than 12 million visitors last year, many of them from the U.S. Inside Edition's Les Trent has more.
If Americans did that to other tourists, we would be seen as xenophobic and in some cases racist.

At the other point though the Californian economy is roughly on par with the German economy, so if the richest country in Europe matches the richest state in America economy wise I think that says something, and not like California makes most of our money, the texan economy is also very good, with it being slightly better than the Canadian economy, so keep coping.

I’m coming to Madrid at the end of August, I’ve been a few times and concur the centre is gorgeous and I love it (totally different atmosphere to Barcelona which increasingly feels edgy and unsafe). Also, although Madrid can be scorching hot by day, humidity is always very low compared to the sweatbox Barcelona is in August.

This is pretty ridiculous. I’ve seen Spanish tourists, and they’re incredibly rowdy. Like they’re fun, and I don’t mind, but it’s weird they’re being rude to tourists when a lot aren’t the most respectful when they’re in other countries.

If Americans did this to tourists, we would be ripped apart in the news. Well, when their economy goes down because of people not going, they may change their mind. When France denied America the right to fly over their air space after 9/11, The Louvre was reported as EMPTY. There were no tourists in many parts of France for quite a while.

I saw on another channel that they were tired of all the houses being bought up and used for Air BNB’s, making it nearly impossible to find reasonable housing for themselves. Not sure how true that is.

I traveled to Vietnam and Malaysia and I found the people there so sweet and welcoming and it's BEAUTIFUL! Definitely recommend south east Asia!

I recently just got back from Barcelona I didn’t think it was all that great. We didn’t encounter this but in general I find Europeans rude. Only the hotel and serving staff nice. I won’t be going back.

That was my experience in Europe too. Even off the beaten path, away from tourist traps, Europeans were just...unpleasant? It's a depressing continent in my experience.

Just don't go there. Spain makes over 90 billions a year with tourism. Spain as a whole has a yearly income of 460 billion, to put that into perspective. If they don't want you want you there, take your money to places in Europe that will take it. During Covid everyone was whining because they made no income due to the lack of tourists but apparently those with the water guns don't need income, so do them a favor and just go elsewhere.

As an Englishman don't go to Spain or mainland Europe tourism is like 80% of Spain's income yet they hate non-Spanish and as for the rest of Europe with their tourism taxes why bother if they want be racist and tax non locals let their economy fail just go to the UK or Ireland.

I am european but live in north america. went to barcelona last year and found people very rude and unwilling to help or acknowledge you even if it was their job. also saw stuff like "tourists you kill the neighbourhood" and really saw this coming. Wont be going back to spain.
I hated Barcelona too. Glad it’s not just me! We visited Valencia too and it was completely delightful, so it’s not all of Spain, or even southern Spain.
