It appears nobody knows what a true rogue wave is. A rogue wave can be any height. It's just a wave that is at least double the height of the average wave size in the area. Therefore it's possible to have a 10ft rogue wave.
rogue waves are just the result of two waves of the same frequency(width, depth and height) meet and combine to create one wave of double the size of the two original, and in rare situations this can happen multiple times creating monster waves in a relatively calm ocean, they are waves after all and act just like any other wave be it sound or light.

My Navy ship got hit by a rogue wave and it was violent. The guys on the Bridge said it was close to a 52 degree roll our ship did. For my class of ships which was an FF it was the magic number of 52 that would tip the ship on it's side.
One of my high school surfing buddies went to Cabo on a big boat with his father and older brother going with a bunch of family friends of theirs. they returned ahead of plans to avoid a hurricane. A single mayday was heard. No one was found. a few small pieces of the boat were found.
I read "Heavy Weather Sailing" by K. Adlard Coles years ago and was gobsmacked by stuff from a French sailor (was his last name Tessier?) who sailed a yacht from beneath a cupola protection . There was a photo of a wave breaking over the top of a breaking wave with a caption that begged the question about surviving such things. Wouldn't that qualify as a freak (rogue) wave?

Rogue wave or not, these are pretty high seas. I spent some time in the South Atlantic many many years ago. Watching videos like these really bring back memories.
Luckily this boat was large enough with massive ballasts to distribute the weight. Any smaller ship than this during these rough waters would be disastrous.

Big seas on big boats are just another day 99.998 % of the time, while the risk of a chain of events taking it out are real, they are rarer and rarer by the year....now, on 50' and under sailboats its a completely different thing to be in storm seas, especially when you cant even steer without being on deck...and even on these smaller vessels there are certain things that if done correctly and at the correct time reduce the risks to that similar to driving.in poor conditions... But someone who doeant know basic seamanship it can be certain doom (part of basic seamanship is to avoid this kinda weather by any means....usually just waiting for a long window and sailing the rigjt season for whatever route you have chosen).....and of course safety gear and training are absolutely not to be done without

E.g. huge parts of super tankers and iron ore carriers missing. Steel bolts shorn off indicating the unimaginable brutal strength. The Super Tanker - from the late Eighties scares the living daylights out of me. A long and heavy oil carrying super tanker reported heavy seas and larger than normal waves. A first Officer reported that this ship was really struggling in this storm. Now this is what makes my blood chill to this day as the last radio report has words to this effect is " ... I have never seen seas and waves like this . . . my GOD . . . look how . . . ( garb l ed words) and then men screaming . . . a nd then ... nothing." The ship never seen or heard from again. No wreckage ever found. Engineers these days say that this Rogue Wave would have had at least a 300 foot face. Whilst waves are measured from peak to trough, this cannot apply to these Rogues.
