      These are massive debts and China expects to be paid back with the high interest rates typically associated with loans to African nations. Those paying off these debts (the tax paying public) will feel the costs of taking these massive loans for years to come. The governments that took these loans will either have to default like Ghana or tax the public so hard you will feel like the air you breath costs money.

    This will bring the division amongst African nations closer together. What that also brings is the easy access to other African nations and fast transportation of goods. I hope to bear witness in my life time that Africa will prosper and break centuries of "slave-master" mindset from the old colonial days and Africans stand equal in economic power like the West, Asia and European continents.

    I hope tariffs on goods and services will not dissuade a higher percentage of persons from using the railway service.
    I also hope adequate technical policies have been put in place to ensure remittance of funds to service the loan as when due.

    There was another railway China was building in Africa decades ago. While in progress (China paid for it as token of friendship), it deliberately got destroyed by US. US didn't want china to finish it. Forget when & where it exactly was. Thought it was in the 1960s.

    It sounds like a great news but it needs to be confirmed as China is grappling with alot of bad debts both in China and outside China and Kenya is also struggling with $6.8 Billion already owed to China .I thought Kenya was looking for PPP(Private Public Partner) investment like the Nairobi expressway to finance the Naivasha-Malaba line.This way the investor pays for the project and runs the project for sudden number of years to recoup their investment plus profit.

    Yeah! Tanzania has beaten Kenya to it by a mile or two...While we have ''Gari ya Moshi'' They have a connecting Electricity Trains SGR which will connect all the way to Rwanda and even Congo. This Kenya one can't even compare. I love my Kenya but how do you build a railway line which is Diesel based AND IT COSTS MORE THAN THE MUCH LONGER ELECTRICITY ONE BEING BUILT BY TANZANIA REALLY BEATS ME....Hahahahaha!

      @@jonahsanga9150 Unlike the neighboring countries, the cost of acquiring land in Kenya is much higher than the neighboring countries. This is the cost of being more developed and having a "flawed" but functional democracy forcing you to pay market prices or close to it. Also, intermittent power makes electrifying the train "nonoptimal". Electrifying trains is also more expensive and as the SGR was already over budget, it wasn't a viable option. The SGR was commissioned for cargo/freight, people were entirely secondary.

    The same people praising china today are the ones who were criticizing Ruto recently when he visited china country and signed some financial agreements with it. These same bloggers here praising China demonized Ruto for going there to seek financing of these same projects they're now praising china for here.     I believe now more than ever that Uhuru Kenyatta's termination of the SGR at Naivasha was deliberate and by design to deny it reaching Kisumu hence the people of Kisumu not benefitting from it

      why such low level arguements? the plan was to go all the way to kampala but the chinese pulled out of further funding due to concern of the line's viability and ability of kenya to repay the SGR loans, this is in public domain and the whole project had became unpopular including by Ruto himself as it was dragging the country into debt hole.

      It passed through Uhuru's land because speculators had bought land where the previous plan was for superprofits selling it back to the government. Kenya wanted a PPP for the remainder of the line and Uganda was uncommited on their end. Ethiopia also pulled out of LAPPSET. It's only now that America has shown interest in kenya have the Chinese agree to complete the line .

      The oppersite is true.
      The Chinese began the construction work on the Mombasa-Nairobi SGR in November 2013 and completed 18 months ahead of schedule, while Obama didn't traveled to Kenya and Ethiopia until July 2015. He came to Africa purely out of jealousy to meet with government, business and civil society leaders, reinforcing the U.S. commitment to economic growth and trade, democracy and investment. He has not kept his promise until today.
