FUN FACT when I designed this colour for the Army Painter Speedpaint Team I wanted to call it "Ghostly Ectoplasm" as this was exactly what I wanted to use it for!!! Glad to see it being used for that intended use!!!!

I've found you almost never need more than a single coat with Speedpaints, one of the reasons they're what I use to basecoat everything now.. Every time I look at the Two Thin Coats paint stand at my store I think "Oh hell no"
Another tip is to drybrush with an off white that has a blue tint instead of a pure white. It keeps that spookiness going
using blue and white ink can help with that, esp. if you use an airbrush
P3 Frostbite would probably be great for this. ... If you can find any.
Feels like a Spinal Tap quote. "An off white with a blue tint is the spookiest of dry brush colors. None more spooky."

Hmmm hear me out: "Ghost juice" for skin, and heavy grimdark inks on uniforms for an "Akira Kurosawa - Dreams, The Tunnel" themed army. I might need to add this to my pile of sha... of potential, list.
There is also an alternative from GW ''Nighthaunt gloom'', ''hexwraith flame'' and also ''nihilakh oxide''
nighthaunt gloom is more of a grey with a slight cyan hint and a midtone grey for the occlusion. its a really handy contrast paint especially for mixing but i definitely wouldnt use it for ghosts.
I was adding some corosion with "nihilakh oxide" to my deathratlte's armor and thought it may look rather interesting to paint the bones all ghostly instead of bone-y. But what to do when you've already finished 20 of them and have decided on the army paint scheme already? But at least it's comforting knowing someone else had the same idea. Maybe for a wight king on foot.
I’ve always found that Nihilakh Oxide is more for adding verdigris to models - it’s kind of chalky and matt finish. The other two I’ve tried but wasn’t as happy with the results, personally. Thanks for watching!
I was wondering how nihilakh oxide would work... it was originally billed as a verdigris effect but quickly GW showed some of their ghosts using this finish before they came out with nighthaunt gloom and hexwraith flame. I have all of them so they would be my go-to - but I would be interested in seeing the comparison with Army painter.
But those aren't Army Painter paints.
Love it! I was toying with the idea of painting two sci-fi skirmish forces in a "blue glow" and a "red glow". This would give the vibe of a commander standing over a holographic display thing (think - every sci fi movie ever). This video has shown me maybe a way to do this. Ty 😊

For blue, I think Battleship Grey would be a good color, as it's a very light grey with some blue tones in it (I often use it for snowy things, so it's that sort of color) I don't really think there's a red equivalent - all the reddish colors in the Speed Paint range are significantly more intense, even the pastel ones (Pastel Orange and Princess Pink). Maybe one of the sand- or bone-type colors - the yellow/brown has the same warmth as red, but without the intensity.
...I have a thought:
That ghost-light would look a little better if it looked like it was coming from within rather than externally, so... Prime white, airbrush in this pastel seafoam to completely coat the model, then use either a white oil/enamel wash or just mix some speedpaint medium with a white ink and wash it in that.
In theory you'd get the negative of the current value range, with the recesses seeming to glow brighter and a more intense white than the rest of the model in this seafoam (or other appropriate pastel green/blue depending on if you're going for 'force ghost' or 'return of the king ghost swarm')
Definitely. Everyone always paints ghosts the same as everything else- dark shadowed recesses with light highlighted highpoints- but they look so much spookier if you reverse that. Sure, it's harder to pull off, but it's worth it!
I was playing with the idea like that (reverse shading). But I was wondering, if you mixed a tiny bit of pearlescent/iridescent medium into the whitish 'shading' wash to give it a bit of a 'shimmer' feel on the brighter internal lite parts. obviously this is a case of less is more. Do you think it might work assuming I can get a fine enough 'ground pearly stuff'?

My husband, Matt, is going to make a ghost army (models chosen from Necromunda, Warcry, Pathfinder, Independent STLs, 40k, 30k, etc) just for collecting. He's using this formula thanks to this video, but adding the following; ontop of the seafoam, as needed, Hexwraith Flame and on the edges of weapons and eyes Tesseract Glow. The bases will have lots of skulls added from that $30 kit GW put out years ago with a ridiculous amount of skulls. Thank you for inspiring him, he finished his two Imperial Knight armies just about and was feeling lost in what to do next. He was smiling so much watching this video, he kept wanting to do ghosts, but didn't fully like how others did them. Thanks again for helping my man who struggles with depression and masking to find something else that makes him smile!

There is a “florescent” white from Scale, Brilli White I think. It is more pearl than frorescent. Use that as the white undercoat and you can have sparkle ghosts in the same method
For ghosts i like to do a reverse zenithal - prime black then highlight white from the bottom inetead of the top. Gives them an unnatural look!

When I did my ghosts/nighthaunt I started with the Pastel Seafoam then did the lower half of my models in Kroxigor Scales. But I agree the Pastel Seafoam truly feels like Black magic. I also drybrushed the whole model a light grey.

It works pretty well also with the old plasmatic bolt speedpaint. And I glue some cotton to the base to make some fog effect, it really stands out.
I did a ghost like this using the plasmatic bolt speed paint. It's stupid easy and looks great.

I kind of want to try this but stipple in the colour of the real material like the chains, the wooden handle and the cloth of their cowls to get a mix of ethereal and real materia for my spirits.

I remember playing a game of Warhammer Fantasy years back against a Vampire Counts player who'd put the literal absolute minimum of effort into painting. Good player and very nice chap; but his ethereal units were essentially blobs covered in Tippex. 😀

I use an even faster way of “painting” ghostly figures. I 3D print them in a clear resin, but add yellow, and a touch of blue, to the mix. The models print in a nice, translucent, green. “Painting” done. Used this, initially, on the six “Living Spirits” I printed for Gloomhaven, and have use it often, since.

You could do the metals with a silver/steel metallics then hit with the seafoam for that extra ghostly pop

I was thinking about that to help give it some more color but keep the ghost look. Paint some of the model areas, and they go over it with ghost juice.
I have a heap of nighthaunt miniatures to paint. For this I developed my own acrylic paint that I also added glow in the dark pigment powder to. Instead of sticking to the one colour scheme for the nighthaunt I have created several different colour schemes, each with their own glow in the dark pigment. Some will be yellowy green, some purple, some blue and some red. This will add some visual interest to the different models.
This is pretty much how I do my ghostly gang. I have been thinking of trying out some underpainting and using a coloured primer (probably a green or blue) before the white to add some extra dimension to the shadows though.

I use an almost identical technique. Instead of Priming black and white, I prime all white, and then with an airbrush, I do a zenithal with elemental bolt (army painter) from the bottom to top and toxic mist (army painter) as a zenithal. Works wonderful. And for the chains, I use rough iron (army painter) and a mythical orange as a kind of wash. I should try a speed paint to add more details to nook and crannies.
I did something similar when I did my Dead of Dunharrow army. I just did a full 3 step Zenithal, so I added in the Grey layer. But for the color I went with something a bit deeper in color, so I used Plasmatic Bolt.
I've already painted my Deth Wizards horde, and it does inclue a Wraith and a Banshee. I used clear plastic miniatures, and gave them a single coat of Citadel's Pylar Glacier. (no priming, bceause they're cleare) . I had no idea what I was doing, but it came out really nicely.

Used a very similar method a couple of years back when painting Spirits for Zombicide Black Plague. I believe I had to use AP washes then.

Love the technique! I may use turquoise acrylic ink to serve as the glowing color.
It's this or resin print in something transparent, then use a glaze to color it, maybe paint any non-ephemeral pieces, like if they're holding a scythe or something
I used a similar color from Vallejo. Over a bone white to get ghostly effects on to my horses on the old black coach
The effect could probably be used with other colors of speed paints too, I imagine a yellow-green or a pastel purple would look cool if you wanted a different shade of specter

Just from watching this video, I went out to my LFGS today and picked up my own Ghost Juice. I've also zenithaled 10 Ork Gretchins and plan on making the weapons similar to how they looked at 1:34. Thanks so much for putting this video out for what looks like, and should be, a fun paint session :)
I've done exactly this using Citadel Nihilakh Oxide - it's great to know that there's an Army Painter alternative now!

My family has jokingly commented on an idea like this for years, and didnit on and off. We used Aethermatic Blue and called the process Spooky Blue
I had a few nighthaunt for an Underworlds Warband that I have been meaning to paint and this seems like a really cool way to get them together quickly
Nice simple spooky glow! Might be a bit too simple for me, but the color is fantastic and i'll probably add that in to my ghosts even if I don't just speedpaint and done.

Perfect timing! I need to paint my Undead Gunslinger for Shadows of Brimstone, and to me his rules suggest a ghost more than a zombie. This'll be a great way to do it.
I absolutely love the Army Painter SpeedPaints, and it's good to see a fellow Wisconsinite supporting them.
I see these ghosts as more everything about them is created with the ethereal ectoplasm. They are not holding a metal sword with an otherworldly glow. They are holding an extension of their own creation. It is what they envision of themselves when they were alive. A sword wielder in life will have sword if they return. This method is awesome for manifested ghosts, not animated armor.

Ooooh! Thanks for the great advice...and payin' forward. I've got those models setting in a box just waiting for the right color choice, and I believe this just might be it.
I use dark ink with progressively lighter colours drybrushed over it. It's quite effective if you have Reaper Bones or other clear plastics. Gives a very weird effect if you are using glowing plastic, or Revell Nightcolor on top.

My recipe is actually very similar.
I personally don’t use the pastel seafoam because I don’t like its coverage and when I tried putting it through an airbrush it clogged like hell.
My recommendation is do the same stuff as is recommended here but use the Caribbean ocean color instead. It’s a greenish blue instead of a bluish green but I think it’s a juicier color than the seafoam. Also I recommend doing a light zenithal of white over it.
Basically base coat black
Zenithal white 30 degree angle
Apply color of choice
Zenithal white 10 degree angle
Nice, a nice glow in the dark over wash sealer would add a neat special effect, or a UV clear coat. Nice fast and easy paint tip.

Yeah. Just came across this and yes, I am SO going to use this method. I have the whole GW MESBG Army of the Dead that I've been trying to figure out how to paint. I'm super new to the hobby of both building and painting minis, and building terrain. I was planning on picking up the Nolzur's Undead Paint Set just for the Ghostly Vapors, but now I'm thinking that I don't need to drop another $40.00-$50.00 on paints. I bought the Super Duper Mega Mondo Speed Paint Kit about a year ago and have barely used it. Time to start. Thanks for the info about this. Grey pile of shame shall soon be lessened.
Great little tutorial. I tried something similar a few months ago on a handful of miniatures. Started out with Army Painter's Uniform Gray primerfollowed by a heavy zenithal of white spray. My base color was a great Vallejo air color called Duck Egg Green, thinned down so it was a bit streaky with just a single coat. And then I lightly drybrushed using GW's two lightest grays wbich are both almost white (I forget the names). Takes no time at all. Cleaning, assembling and prepping the miniatures took longer than the painting. I may expand the half dozen figures I painted into a small Old World legacy undead army.
I'm debating on doing a ghost rat regiment of Clanrats in my Skaven army. I don't have the new sculpts yet, but I'd gotten bored with the old ones, so I buck tradition and made one of my recent sets of 20 rats into Game of Thrones -inspired White Walker rats. I think the ghost idea might look really awesome next to them.
I'll definteley experiment with this method when I paint Scare Glow from the Masters of the Universe Battleground game.
I bought $50 of glowing fish tank miniatures on Temu and now I have an OPR army of Casper the friendly Ghostly Undead
So, I do this 100%! One thing you can also do is use prismatic bolt speedpaint to darken the reassess and give it more of a glow look
White base with pylar glacier contrast, or nighthaunt gloom has given me fun fast results
Putting this in as Plan B for my Malifaux sorrows when the overcomplicated Plan A probably doesn't pan out.

Good timing on this video. Painting a Headless Horseman and was about to paint the horse dark blue & purple. But this decided me on going with a white stallion with spectral hooves, mouth and eyes instead. Possibly the mane too, but maybe that should still be black/blue & purple... not sure yet.

I've done this exact technique using Plasmatic Bolt speed paint, it really is super easy and effective.
I'm going to buy the NH Spearhead because of this video just to see how fast I can finish that Box

I've used Plasmatic Bolt for this very purpose. Mainly because Pastel Seafoam is a colour that isn't in the first edition speedpaint mega set.
Still does the job very effectively.

Stumbled on this by using some primed "spare" minis from a box of Frostgrave minis I had acquired just to see how the Speed Paint would look before I painted the mini I actually wanted to paint. Chose against using it for the mini I wanted to paint as I wasn't what I was looking for but I quickly ran a host of minis of the 3D printer to use this method for a myriad of spectres and ghosts for my D&D collection. Best use of a single paint I've ever come across.
I'd love to see this expanded though to see how people make this effect with a matching glow effect on the base for luminescent spirits. I have some drowned sailors I'd love to try something like that for
I tried something like this. I wanted to see what a reverse slap chop would look like (ie white with black dry brush). That wouldn’t look right for most things, but I thought it might look cool with a spectral figure. So, I found a skeletal miniature that I didn’t like, and had multiples of, did the reverse slap chop, and painted it with army painter plasmatic bolt. It didn’t look too bad. It was spectrally, and was very easy.
I found Plasmatic Bolt works well too. It's just a little stronger in shade but I'm sure some speed paint medium would whiten that out if needed.
I used this same idea on my Idoneth Deepkin Namarti flesh. So easy and I like the look.
