My dad studied WW2 very closely and he is in absolute hysterics every time he watches this scene. He said Jon Lovitz nailed the impression and must've studied it closely, even if it was for such a short scene.
The Canadian War Museum has the actual car. The windows were damaged by gunfire. There is a lot of different stories about how it happened, but this finally explains everything.

It’s called a farce, as based on the classical French drama. John Cleese, who also appears in this movie, used this comedy method to create the Fawlty Towers series. I don’t know if he helped write the screenplay for this movie but I wouldn’t be surprised if he did help. If you like comedies like this you’ll definitely like Fierce Creatures and A Fish Called Wanda.
This scene gave me some of the best laughs I’ve had in years after just watching the movie again for the first time tonight since I was a kid. Bittersweet that scenes like this won’t see the light of day anymore.
