Following an explosive investigation into the Global Disinformation Index, viewed 8 million times on X/Twitter, UnHerd has been contacted by dozens of lawmakers and activists raising concerns about rating agencies like the GDI. In this update video, Freddie Sayers addresses a House of Lords committee on the chilling effect of censorship and makes a case to defund the ‘disinformation industry’.

Yes, it's no coincidence that the people that are so 'concerned' about 'disinformation' are the same people that want the most control.
All of the noise about this issue has come from the top, the General Public doesn't give a hoot about 'disinformation'.
As far as they (the Elite) are concerned there's no distinction between 'disinformation' and 'disobedience'.

How do people know what is spread by people and what is spread or highlighted by AI algorithm.... if AI can spread misinformation and highlight the certain topics in the algorithm?
AI may spread any bug or information that isn´t true or create a fake picture and people may believe anything.
or may highlight the topic that is controversial, because people click on it more.
The reason why the folks behind GDI aren't responding is that they are already shutting it down and setting up a new one. That's how it works, if you get caught, rebrand.
I am afraid this is how it works.

While simultaneously bingeing every UnHerd piece of content ever produced to try to find SOMETHING, ANYTHING that supports their assessment of them.
That's what we see from those addicted to power.
That's why what we need is properly funded groups to catalogue track and expose every one of these groups, where their funding comes from and who runs them.
Meanwhile JULIAN ASSANGE , truthteller, reporter, HONEST MAN, rots in Belmarsh.
Assange's indictment is for actively engaging in espionage against the US. Nation states in the modern world obviously need to keep classified documents secret -- the lives of those in the intelligence network depend on them as does the US' strategic nuclear stance, to name just two examples.
Dear Freddie avoids the discussion of Assange at all cost it seems.
He declined to ask Sumption why he had no sympathy for Assange's predicament.
Are you trying to warn Freddie? All I know is, if I were him or his family, I'd be worried at this point. Paranoia or not. Because the "fake news" and "disinformation" handles just don't fit Freddie do they. It's possible to predict that they may now have have to find some other way.

Absolutely brilliant Freddie. But the real stunner and sad reality is that you have to spell out the blindingly obvious to a select committee.
I thought it was really interesting/funny that almost every question that was asked was a variation on, "But Freddie, how is the government supposed to maintain control of The Narrative?" They simply could not get their heads around the notion that it's not for them to control our every thought. When and how the hell did that happen? They're so comfortable with it too. Smh.

Here's my suggestions:
(1) Completely abandon any notion that "disinformation" can ever include true claims. The only thing which should ever be considered disinformation are claims which are demonstrably implausible.
(2) If there is to be any role for government at all. It should be in countering those claims. Not censoring them. And certainly not censoring them secretly.
Agreed, also, the sad irony is, that, in a lot of cases, it is THEM (the Government) that are the biggest spreaders of disinformation.
A lot of the 'disinformation' that they are so concerned with, were people questioning the vax and the benefits of lockdowns, THEY (the Government) deemed those people as purveyors of 'disinformation'.
Yet, subsequensent research has shown that those doubts were in fact warranted.
But, of course, there's no acknowledgment of that, it's all about those Shady Characters out in the internet darkness, that are maliciously spreading 'disinformation', it's laughable.
@@andybrice2711 yes, a lot of the time disinformation is based on logical fallacy that can be demonstrated to be invalid from first principles. There will be a few straight-up lies, but they are usually things that wouldn't amount to much, even if true, without the overall kinks in thinking.

This is what we’ve needed. An eloquent well presented and factual argument against the censorship industrial complex. A move away from the sensationalism and pseudo spiritual nonsense of TH-camrs like Brand et al. The main stream can’t ignore Unherd and Freddy as he’s playing them at their game. @@zumamaya2396he's a bit much at times, but he has a sizeable niche that needs this kind of frenzied poetry, and at the end their messages are nearly a perfect match, i.e. they're pulling in the same side of the rope IMHO. With that said, I adore Freddie's total composure and verbal control!

So true. If I were cynical, I'd suspect this is all research into how they might do it better a.k.a. "How can we sell our desired narratives more convincingly?"

Very erudite in your delivery, and excellent points made. I remember a TH-cam video of the deputy editor of the British Medical Journal being banned for having 'antivaxxer' concerns about the level of scrutiny applied to covid-related research paper submissions by Nature , the BMJ and the Lancet.
What an extraordinary win. During the 'Pandemic' my heart was broken and I kept telling my kids, "we need a 'Eureka Moment' so people will wake up".... well, 3.5 years later, we have it!

Two things increased my scepticism by orders of magnitude:
1 the reaction of the Establishment - all parts of it - to the plebs voting for Brexit,
2 the lies told to us in the Covid pandemic.
There are sooo many more examples.

How about JFK ? Brexit also (armagedon), the list just goes on..

As a corollary, all government employees, contractors, and unelected officials should be required to place all unclassified government owned information on a government website where any citizen can quickly and easily retrieve it.
Any citizen should be able to sue any government employee, contractor, or unelected official who fails to place such information on that website, or who places any false information on the website.
Additionally, no government employee, contractor, or unelected official should discuss his government work with the public, except at the invitation and in the presence of an elected official. The buck stops with elected officials. As a corollary, no government employee, contractor, elected or unelected official should ever have or use a spokesman. The buck stops with elected officials.
All the organisations that acted upon GDI recommendations need to be ordered to remedy any actions the took based on the GDI pontifications.

What shocked me is just how flagrant this was. Like I always suspected that fact-checkers had political biases. But I didn't expect anyone to just say the quiet part out loud. The problem is, if you try to share "these kind" of contents, you're punished by social media. I can't reach anyone anymore, and I shared only one post, questioning Covid data back in 2021, originally signed by 1000+ local doctors. Then boom. Since then my posts are almost fully invisible. Even if share a picture, a link of a song or if I try to ask preactical help. My only way to raise awareness is personal conversations. So far these are not monitored or censored. We'll see how long...

I am so proud of what you have done regarding this issue. I have been subscribed for a while and I am always impressed with the topics you handle. I may not always agree with the discussions but appreciate the views. That is what we need, debate - you are entitled to have the ability to be funded by advertising. What has been revealed in your expose of GDI is so important - it has elevated my good opinion of your company. When a tech company decides who can be funded based on their own position on certain topics - that is disinformation. Propaganda. Behind you 100% - media serves the public, not police it.

Just want to say how thankful I am for unherd doing such an amazing job of highlighting this disgraceful organisation, but more importantly ripping the lid of this movement and allowing us the freedom to be able to speak factually again without fear of reprisals. The very fact that I have to say its ok to speak facts again or voice concerns/queries says it all really. This feels like the beginning of a return to the days when you may detest and disagree with another person's views/opinions/choices but they were allowed to have them anyway. I did notice that channel 4 news had a programme on this week though about the impact of the cass report on young adults, I didn't watch it but it made me think, the fightback has begun. Although, the fact that we are finally able to debate and talk about the other side of this issue is a huge step forward. Thank you unherd for the amazing work you do keep it up!
