With Super Tuesday and the State of the Union address, the race to become President of the US is hotting up. And it seems that there are now only two likely candidates on the cards: Joe Biden and Donald Trump.
To mark this moment in the campaign, UnHerd gathered together some our favourite free-thinking politics writers to discuss the race for the Whitehouse. Freddie Sayers was joined in Washington DC by Ruy Teixeira, Robby Soave and Emily Jashinsky to ask: who will win in 2024?

I stressed to my father back in 2016 that Trump voters were, in large part, voting AGAINST the mainstream media narrative and the "progressive media" agenda in general, far MORE than they were voting for Trump himself.
ZERO mainstream media outlets or progressive analysts, and even very few conservative or moderate analysts seem to understand this (to this day!).
For many Trump voters, it's about rebelling against the progressive agendas.

People are using the word "age," but clearly they are referring to presence of mind. In fact, I think Biden's advanced age makes his confused and unfocused behavior less damaging. Imagine if a 45-year-old said:
"I have never been particularly poor at calculating how to get things done in the United States Senate. So the best way to get something done, if you, if you hold near and dear to you that you like to be able to, anyway...”
They would receive no sympathy or excuse. A young man, with Biden's performance, would never have been given enough grace to reach the White House.

Because a federal law preempts state laws. @glennmitchell9107 On what basis? A state cannot limit federally protected rights. That is basic constitutional law. Nothing in the Dobbs decision changes that, because the decision does not declare that full personhood for purposes of abortion law begins before birth.

When followers persalize themselves to anyone like that in a leadership position is never really a good thing. Its literally what cults do and its done on both sides. Opinions should never be up for debate. You just give each other your opinions and everyone conciders them. No one has a right to say your opinion is wrong. So i agree. We need more convo like this when it comes to politics. Its a great example of democracy respecting either others views. @@yengsabio5315 It’s not about Primaries as DiamondLil posits, its about the _structural design_ of our Electoral College (EC) system.
To understand why the two-party system is so firmly entrenched in the United States, it’s important to understand how our elections work. The U.S. system of representation is based on who wins the most votes in each district, not necessarily a majority of votes cast. In addition, each distinct area-whether congressional district, state or, in the case of the presidency, the nation as a whole-is represented by a single member, rather than proportional representation based on the number of votes received. This is what allows a 2016 Trump presidency to win with fewer votes than their opponent.
The tendency for such a winner-takes-all, single-member district system to promote a two-party organization is sometimes explained by a concept known as “Duverger’s law,” named after the French political scientist Maurice Duverger.

Let’s not forget Hamas and their allies didn’t just torture, slaughter, and kidnap Israelis and Jews in Oct 7. People of other nationalities and religions were also their victims, including Arab Muslims who declared themselves brothers and sisters of the faith before they were deliberately murdered despite this.

Abortion is Bizarre, and a Horrid Example of Emotional Voting. Consider the Women's Status and the Health Science at the time of RVW. Women needed Permission from a Husband or Farther for Birth Control. So birth control was not really available and lower classes often couldn't afford it. It took at least 2 + months to confirm pregnancy. Abortion was illegal, Now, you have so many Birth Control options, including injections so you don't have to remember to take the pill. You can stock pile morning after pills and later date termination pills. You can have an oops and take a morning after pill. You can confirm pregnancy almost immediately, there are pills available for a couple of months. So why does anyone need an abortion in the 5th+ month ? We have so much technology and find most severe defects early; And should termination need to be available due to life of mother, its available, and wouldn't be an issue if the Progressives would get off the Abortion ON Demand for Any Reason until Birth, the whole conversation would die down. Currently it is a fight that the democrats will keep rolling, people get caught up in the argument in lieu of the rationally of how Abortion Needs have Changed.
