Out for a four wheeler ride looking for bear signs and came across these water moccasins fighting in the creek .
I never seen this before. so I had to take some pictures
That ain't no fighting. That's their mating dance!
For sure Haha
Fightin, fuqin, it's all the same.
Sheet...is that my ex?
Yes, have seen this courting ritual on bitumen road in country SAfrica ... 2 huge ones completely twisted around each other with just heads and necks free - ain't love grand.!!
You are correct! I was taught that in elementary school by my grandpa! I don't think I would have that kind of knowledge if I wasn't from Alabama. Where are you from?
That's the love dance if I ever seen it!
Lifelong herpetologist here. This appears to be a classic "combat dance" between 2 males for territorial dominance. Many other snake species exhibit essentially the same behavior, including (but not limited to) Pine Snakes, King Cobras, Red Diamond and other rattlesnakes, etc. This sort of wrestling match, in which the two animals rear up and try to "pin" the other, is not what occurs during mating between snakes of opposite sexes.
I've seen this before on discovery channel, and thanks !
If they have different colored undersides, might they be two different breeds?
Most cottonmouths I've seen had light colored bellies and mouths that looked like stuffed with cotton. How's summertime was when we noticed cottonmouths we're seen outside the water. I killed one that was cooked up ready to strike our barn cat. I pulled my husband's 410 down on it and split every coil down that snake. About 10 pieces it was a long dude. I was cleaning up the mess on our side walk and my husband said, "there goes the other one". I pulled 410 down on it as it was racing away and shot his tail off. Never did see him again so husband figured he'd crawled into their nest and eventually died.
What was funny, I'd never shot any gun but an air rifle. I'd shot suirrels out of trees for my Airedale and Boston bulldogs to kill. I actually hate guns. So when my husband saw the pieces of the water moccasin he had to laugh and he said, "Remind me not to get on the wrong end of your gun.". Lol
@@sharonwells9593 three subspecies of cottonmouth Pit Vipers. The Florida, Eastern and Western. Judging by the environment in the video These would-be Western cottonmouth.
I have run into two different occasions when Snakes were acting like this.
I know they were mating, there was no doubt about them mating.
It was very interesting to watch them. When I thought they were trying to kill each other, all of a sudden they quit and turned to me, watched me for about 30 seconds, then they went their separate ways.
There was no doubt one of them was a male. They could have cared less if I was there, plus my dog constantly barked at them.
He never saw the female but she saw him for sure.
If you saw 2 fighting chances are there is a 3rd close by . They are fighting for her loving
You may be right, there was a 3rd smaller snake later on.
Thanks for watching.
I was thinking there was a rotten female causing this lol
They could f your day up in a heartbeat and you wouldn't have a chance to stop it.
You are right there, thanks
Yup, mating! That's why the male hissed at ya, you were interrupting his mojo with the female! LOL!
You right on. thanks for watching
100% cotton mouth. Yesterday I was picking up sticks in my swimming area on Lake Austin on the bottom and on my third scoop with both hands I felt something soft In The Sticks because we so I quickly threw it up onto the shore it was about a three and a half foot water snake. Thank God it wasn't a moccasin. But it still scared the heck out of it. It's not too often I throw a big snake
I’m new to the Ouachita mountain area, so I’m still learning the snake species in this area. I am not a fan of poisonous snakes, but I think that is cool that you didn’t kill them. Live and let live... and enjoy ALL of nature. Nice job brother
FYI snakes are venomous not poisonous
@@CHT420 you are correct. You may have just saved someone’s life by correcting my incorrect definition of dangerous snakes. Thank you for keeping the world a safer olace
@@timothybageant7429 Some snakes are poisonous- if you eat them, they will make you sick or die. I don’t think we have any in the US, but I’m not sure. Venomous snakes make you sick or die when they bite you and inject their venom into you. That’s the difference and I’m sure you can see how those are two very different complications! A really good source on Facebook that I found and enjoy is “What Kind of Snake is This? - North Texas” cuz I live here! But they have some great admins who are knowledgeable about snakes in other areas and also know resources for other areas. I used to be scared spitless of snakes, but I’ve come to love the little beggars!
Cool we are going on 30 years
We might cross paths at some point, thanks for watching
And for those who didn't know those are non-poisonous water snakes beautiful animals water moccasins have a cream colored belly as water snakes have a checkered belly
You got close enough to confirm that they Definitely Are WATER MOCCASINS !!! Cool Video 👍👍
Yep, any closer I'd been lunch. thanks for watching.
They WILL come after ya. Happened to me.
For being so small, they sure aren't scared. Thanks for watching
No they won't and no it didn't
Had one try to get in our boat...we blew it to smithereens...they are aggressive & quick & if you see white...get away FAST.
Yeah, and it's their territory not your's !!
i have seen that before. Did you see a nearby female watching the males fighting? Its mating season
I did, came out of under a rock later, thanks
Getting ready for company no doubt
For you to have captured this is magic that is the snake dance absolutely I don't think I've ever seen anyone capture this moment this is truly a treasure
Thanks for the support, I may never seen it again
They are definitely in love !
Yes, it would be more vicious if it were fighting, me thinks , !!
They need a 12ga. To calm them down. Lol. I hate snakes.
If it hadn't been so far away from home it might have been...
Thanks for watching
You don't have to be scared of them. they are just snakes.
Great footage! Damn! A beautiful day. You just amblin". Thank you for all that work.
Just like a nature show. Color was perfect. You had the focus dialed brah! Cuz, Dialed!
Then you never whispered. Cleb? Walter? Dude? Your desire to be a particapant was
blatent. I probably would have thrown rocks at those twining loving snakes. Made
me feel funny inside.
participant
Thanks and thanks
Don't believe they were mating. They were fighting over territory. The big rock over lay likely was the best of one of them and the other snake found it and tried to squat there.
A smarter way to get close would be zoom
Yeah my GoPro don't have very good zoom, thanks
Looks like two males fighting over female, watch for her.
Now that you mentioned it, there was a smaller snake that came out
after a while. Thanks for your wisdom
These are 2 males fighting for the right to mate with a nearby female. Better be looking for her, rather than watching the males.
Yeah that you mentioned it, there was a female come out from under a rock later.thanks
Damn right!
After seeing this not only am I staying in the north but I may become a Mongoose breeder ✌️🤠
Great strategy ... LOL !!
Between snakes and the heat, I might join you, thanks for watching
These are two males fighting for dominance for the right to mate in this particular territory!
That's what I've been learning, thanks
Top job you legend and I mean a top legend hooe your weekend went well top job and amazing work 👍 👍
Never know what you come across. Glad you enjoyed it
some responders here are saying that they are a male and female mating. actually two males fighting for dominance of the territory.
Thanks, that's what I've learned so far
Great catch.
Thanks
These snake are extremely aggressive. They Will go out of their way to bite you, crossing off 6 foot creek banks, swimming up stream and crawling back up to the street to get to you. I’ve seen that. I’ve had them chase me at river banks, and they don’t give up quickly….
I've heard they can be unpredictable, thanks
One chased me 43 miles all the way to my front door! Then sat outside all night and most of next day with fangs fully loaded
@@robinsmith1091lol
#7 shot and you've got some good snake n'bake
I agree. I like my bond arm's snake slayer.
Never tried it
She's bigger than they are and very close by watching to take the winner! This is snake p*** LOL
No Fight......Love!!!
Was your camera/phone zoomed in? It sure didn’t seem like it. I really wanted a closer view without you getting any closer. I was trying to determine if it was a mating pair or a territorial battle. I think it was the latter. Anyway, I really appreciate the fact that you left them in peace. I’m the guy who catches rattlesnakes that have ventured into the yard and takes them to a safe place and releases them.
It was a gopro, close as I could get.
Their was a small snake later on, thanks
I've come across seeing something like this before walking the railroad trestle
A bizarre thing to see for sure. Thanks for watching
I seen a possum with his head perfectly cut of down at the tracks body was inside the rails head on the outside crazy.
You can bet there's a LOT MORE lurking out there.
Their was, some came out later
The mating dance , just remember they serve a purpose . Wouldn't be here if they didn't ! OK to be scared of them , but doesn't mean they have to be killed . If you see them , you can avoid them . Usually they know your around , way before you get near them . And they do their best to disappear !
Thanks, snakes are harmless if you'll leave them alone.
Very cool
Indeed, thanks for watching
Yep their mating! Your fixing to get alot more..
No.8 Shot, two for one!
Two birds one stone eh!
You have a beautiful Homeland I should be so lucky
Thanks
Boss snake doesn't wait for mating season.
Haha, so I've been told, thanks for watching
I think its two males fighting for dominance , There is probably a female in heat close by .
There was right before we left. Thanks
They're mating not fighting
Not sure, see it on a TV show once. Two cobras were doing the same thing.
Actually they are neither one. Males do not mate with each other. Wrestling is more closely associated with what they are doing. They are not trying to hurt each other. They are just trying to win the love of a nearby female.
The best way to sneak up on a cottonmouth is with a 12ga. The last one I had a problem with was on Lake Travis. It was wrapped around the fish basket with its head inside trying get my fish. The good old .12ga ended it's reign of terror. It's even more fun when one bites your lure and you don't have a gun with you. You just get your gaff and slam it into the rocks. I always had a gaff for the garr. I never thought of Garr as edible, but some of the old timers said if you cooked them right, they were good eating.
Sounds like some good memories. Thanks for watching
Do you think a 7.62x39mm would work nicely on a cottonmouth? Just asking for a friend.
@@bluestar2253 Yeah if you can hit it
What a total POS . Just kill an animal for no reason. Who taught you that? Your Mommy? Your Daddy? Are they also your aunt and uncle? I bet last time your mama was pregnant , all you boys was praying for a girl
I live in Austin. Are you talking about that Lake Travis?
I believe they are mating not fighting
Didn't really seem like fighting, thanks
incredible
Indeed.
Better not get too close. Blue Star has got it right. Mating !!
That's a Mating Dance. And there is NO WAY it was jut the 2 of them. You were MOST likely completely SURROUNDED by them but just didn't see them. I have seen that dance here in Alabama, and I've seen this before in Oklahoma.
That looks to me like two males doing a territorial fight/dance, like many rattlesnakes are famous for, to earn the right to hang around and mate the local females. I have captively bred copperheads, and I have never seen such an active copulation, and there is no evidence that these 2 are connected at the cloaca.
A guy and his friends went down to red creek in Lucedale Ms.and they were going to jump off the bridge when the guy jumped in first it was a while before he came up his last words were what ever you do don't jump in then he went back under when the sheriff's deputies got him out they told his friends that.when he jumped in he landed.in a bed of water moccasins
You again, telling the same old wives tale. No such thing as a bed of water moccasins! LOL🐍
Sounds like a bad day, thanks for watching
My dad told me a very similar story it happened to a kid from his home town in a southern state.
@@hangsolow216 Yep, it happens. The "old wives tale" is that Cottonmouths never group up together in large numbers, because they absolutely can and do. I've seen huge beds of Moccasins by the hundreds before. A lot of so-called experts think they are never do this because they read it in a book somewhere. That's the difference in real experience and book-smarts.
It’s a shame you didn’t have a 12 gauge. You coulda turned them 2 into good snakes.
Haha! Thanks for watching

No zoom on your phone?
No zooming, only a gopro.
They aren't fighting... They are mating! There's no biting going on...
They push each other, if I'm not mistaken, they don't bite, they are not immune to their own venom, I'll Google that now, just to be sure, have a great day.
Maybe, I seen it on the discovery channel once.
There is a dark "blotch" on the big flat rock in front of your feet, and at exactly 2:37 it moves. It looks like something is raising its head. What in the world can it be?
Not sure, but I did see another snake come out later on. In that same area
I don't know what you saw but there's a flat rock over by the snakes and it looks like something is moving its head up and down but it was just a branch.
I watched it 10 times and and didn't see anything
@@user-ym2kb1cp5e I just watched it again and it is as plain as day. I have decided it must be a butterfly or maybe the shadow of a moving leaf. Look at the largest rock in the scene. This rock is at the bottom of the screen and is near the center but slightly to the left side. There is a dark, elongated "blotch" right in the middle of the sunny spot on this rock. Now run the video back to about 2:35 and keep your eye on the left end of this blotch until the camera moves past it at about 2:42 .
@@ralphcantrell3214 it's a shadow from leaf of the tree above as it moves in the light breeze.
Where are they
Back in the mountains in a creek, thanks for watching
Don't think they are fighting, maybe later?
Yeah! You may be right
I got just the solution, my 12 gauge Mossberg Pump.🐍🐍
ggrrrr!! I F'in hate snakes
I just hate the bite, haha thanks for watching
That's Male and female they are mating.
Thanks for the knowledge
You have a Camara why don't you show a close up.?
Next time I'll get even closer, haha
I only have a gopro, thanks for watching.
They aren't fighting, its is a mating ritual. possibly 2 males.
Yeah I've looked into it I think that's what they're doing. thanks
They’re mating dude
They’re just making some little bebbie sneckies… !
They are sorting out their territory.
Thanks for the tip
Those might be water snakes.
Are you sure they're fighting??? Didn't seem all that violent.
Not 100% I seen it on a TV show once.
That's the water snake dance don't you know
Thanks for watching
They are mating
6:00 into the video if you actually want to see it. otherwise this guy will spend six minutes yapping.
They flucking that's all
Making love Trump style...LOL
Yeah mating
And I probably messed them up! Thanks for watching
I believe alot of people have been caught knocking off a chunk....just like these two...haha

Not fighting , and just water snakes .
Give me your address and I'll mail you one so you can make sure. Haha
@@countryeveryday6587 two male water moccasins performing mating ritual dance. The dominant male will pin down the opponent for a few seconds before mating with a nearby female. Pit vipers have this kind of behavior water snakes do not. Nice video, cheers!
it looks like there trying to mate
Some kind of ritual, as I'm understanding.
I think one had gas
This is called mating... Lol they usually mate in bigger groups tho
Only harmless water snakes form a mating ball. This is two male cottonmouth Pit Vipers performing The Mating ritual dance. The dominant male will pin down the opponent's head to claim the right to that territory and mate with a nearby female.
Thanks, that's what I've understood
Thanks for watching
A dance off between males.
Yeah, some kind of ritual,
Thanks for sharing.
They don't look like water moccasins.
