- Gday, This was a quick one day build, i'm not sure what there going to be used on but I suspect its a vintage engine of some description,

If it's a standard thread then a quick way to do this is to use some grub screws. You can turn down one end to a point and harden them. You can also turn one down to make a little socket and use a bit of an old allen key to make the hex tool. I have a video on my channel showing the whole process.

I drove from Melbourne to Eden every weekend for months at a time, Green Cape light house is amazing. Wonboyn log cabins is one of the best places to enjoy wildlife. Eden is my favourite place in Australia.

One alternative for the screws is to use some dog point grub screws and just put a point on them. I don't think this was an option for Matty since it was for a Whitworth thread.

Many threads out there so I purchase all thread rod (when available) with the thread I need to transfer, lock two or three nuts together on the all thread so it fits my three jaw chuck then drill tap and cut off a threaded bushing for my standard set which is either 3/8-16 or 1/2-13. I use a hack saw to slot the end so I can hold the bushing with a flat screwdriver if it turns when it shouldn't. Your craftsmanship is incredibly.

@ 2:02 A good example of "Better Finish", (for want of a term) when the load "depth of cut" is increased on the tool. Hell of a difference, hey.!

I’ve a set of ‘straight’ transfer punches ( Chinese…. bought in Sinny from the Chinese Scotsman ( McJing 🤣🤣)…. but I’ve never seen transfer screws.

Matty I have a full set of those, and they are a must for serious hobbyist. I actually drilled and tapped the end of a 3-foot-long piece of 3/4" round shaft and used it as a transfer punch to mark the center of a half nut I machined for my lathe. I also made one from 1/2" rod for an 18" long transfer punch to mark the center of a cross slide nut for my Clausing Model 100 lathe. When rebuilding Vintage machine tools, it is a must to be able to make your own replacement parts. Great video and superior workmanship. Thanks as always for bringing us along.

Got an aunt and several cousins at Merimbula, the uncle ran a machine shop there back in the day - servicing the large plant for the local forestry I believe. Spent a bit of time there when I was pretty young visiting.
I've got a set of transfer punches, best thing since sliced bread. transfer screws are on my wish list, but given you pretty much have to make a full set for every thread and pitch you need, might take me a while to get a full compliment!

Our friend Allen printed me up two tools that Joe Pie made. One was the centering fixture for the rotory table aligment, and the two small indexing plates that use pins. One day I will include their use in a video. Cheers.

That's a new one on me. . Have no idea what that hand tool is for. . Maybe someone could explain to me the use of it. . Fun to watch this build.
Gday Paul, the screws can been screwed into existing threaded holes and the point is in the centre of the hole, this then will transfer the centre of the hole pattern to another piece of material, I hope that explains it clear enough, cheers

Gday Matty nice work also good seeing or im just finding more local machining channels. when you turned the long peace with a TNMG 60* and mentiond tool pressure i see you have 85* not sure if its a DCMT or a DNMG but either way that would produce less tool pressure less deflection good tool life more clearance between end of bar and live center. I use C,W,or T for roughing and anything slender, thin or has a tendency to vibrate or deflect i go for the DNMG

What are transfer screws ? I have no idea…
Gday, transfer screws allow you to transfer the centre of the threaded hole onto another piece of material, you screw the inserts into the threaded hole until the point is just protruding, lay the material on top and tap it with a hammer and this will leave a centre punch mark showing the centre of the hole, I hope I explained this ok, Cheers
