PLAN and RESEARCH a 2,000 word essay with me at university (how to write first-class essays)

- It's essay deadline season and I just started planning and researching a 2,000 word essay, so I thought I'd bring you along. This is the technique I used last year to get firsts in all my essays, so it's tried and tested!! I hope it helps, as I know essay writing is a bit terrifying and stressful sometimes!!

Joseph Parker absolute rubbish. Marking standards are far lower in the US than they are in Britain and this is a well known fact. To get 80+ on an assessment in the UK means that it’s worth being literally published. Uni is far more difficult for students in the UK and at least students in other developed nations are far more educated and don’t have to pay out their ass for their degree until the day they die. Typical American ignorance and arrogance 🙄

This is a refreshingly novel approach. The referencing spreadsheet is an absolute banger of an idea, which I now view as a condensed form of an essay. Usually I bounce between the material and the draft I'm writing. The references are usually spread over 100 tabs in a web browser.

So for the people who are preparing for essays or will be heading to university in the future and will need to write essays, I highly suggest getting a referencing software for your reference list/bibliography. I have used Mendeley and Endnote. They’re both amazing. Mendeley is free. Endnote you usually pay for but many universities might have it available for free. You put all of the bibliographical information into either of these softwares and both of them have plug-ins for Microsoft word where you can cite directly from what you have added into the software and it will build your reference list for you at the end in whatever style you need. It honestly saves a lot of time. Plus, most of these softwares allow you to put notes into a separation section for each entry and you can use that during the writing stage too.

Definitely second this! Also Zotero is a totally free option that I absolutely love for this--it can also be used as a pdf viewer for each of your sources so you don't need 50 million tabs for each source--all the pdfs are automatically added there! I've heard Mendeley is more modern looking and user friendly but Zotero can more easily collect all metadata from websites (and the automatic pdf linking is a must have for me)!
You and Vee have great ideas on keeping track of those pesky citations.

I found this video in my second year of uni, and your research log was a game changer for me! Having this spreadsheet immediately improved my method and streamlined my workload, allowing me more time to find more interesting and relevant primary and secondary sources, and more time to write. Since graduating (with a first class, thank you Jack!) I still use this method when writing my own personal essays -- I'll say it, logging my sources is fun as hell, and sometimes its my main motivation in writing an essay.

I have three assignments in before Christmas holiday. I made notes on this video, ready to implement over the next couple of weeks.
ive been telling myself for weeks that my deadlines are ages away and i dont have to start doing anything yet but now there are two weeks and 3 1500 word essays to do and i am so done with procrastination and will be using that research table idea
Here is my tips.I couldn’t afford something big for my project, so support suggested ordering plan with main points, which I could extend then. I did, and writer provided all info with links so I just had to add few sentences to each point. Love their website for fresh ideas!
Luckily, they have affordable prices, so it doesn't cost me a fortune to get an essay, when I am in hurry.😍😍😍😍

so cool seeing the difference (and similarities) in what you do/need for your essay/how you plan it compared to what i did in my degree. i studied animal science so a lot of my essays were based on research, so in the format you did i'd have a section for each piece of research i looked at and then have 'background/rationale, methods, results, conclusion, critiques' sections (maybe some others but thats the general gist) and i'd make notes on each study i read and then use them to form what i needed to discuss in the essay. i definitely didn't do this for all my essays but you can totally tell the difference when you've properly planned/prepared it than when you've just had to write write write as you go along. good luck with this one !! OOH ALSO anyone doing a dissertation this is ESSENTIAL for keeping on top of research, definitely not the kinda essay to wing lol

Came back to this video having just finished my final year doing history (using MHRA referencing eugh) and can 100% confirm this method works - my lowest mark this year was 64 and my highest was 80...I used the grid method on ALL of this year's essays so can highly recommend trying it if you do humanities (especially history)!!
I'm doing MHRA for history at the moment too! I realise it's been 3 years, but did you find a software that helped format MHRA references automatically? It seems too niche for lots of the websites.
@@lucykilfara6072I think I used citethisforme most often and would copy that into the document I would later write the essay in and then just go A>Z alphabet sorting in Word. But I've also seen that Queen's University Belfast have a generator for MHRA too!

How you plan out to study and what structure you follow and what to keep in mind, how/ how often to quote, etc. Because i feel lost everytime and our university hasn't really talked about it. Omg you are the best for doing this! About to write my 2000 word essay for my alevel coursework - so thank you 😊 Best advice especially google scholar and colour coding research as there is a focus on critical interpretation and context for my essay
For dissertations and larger written projects I would recommend programs like Zotero, they allow you to log everything and "harvest" information from books and websites - best of all it can create your bibliography (?) at the end of your essay automatically. Absolute life saver
I actually commented on the same thing but I mentioned either Mendeley or Endnote. I found them to be easier to use with the in-text citation plug-ins for word.
