As an academic who teaches English Literature, and who has followed StudyTube for the past 18 months or so because I’m interested in students and their learning, this is absolutely the type of work you should be doing for seminars. The amount of effort your have put in to your work independent research you have done in preparation should be commended! I’m sure many other students will find this video useful as they adapt to university style teaching and learning.

It's so interesting to see how other University's run their courses in regards to lectures/seminars & tutorials. At my Uni we only have seminars of around 15-25 people and it's like a hybrid of both a seminar and a tutorial so 1 week we have 2 lectures for a module e.g. Politics the following week we have the corresponding seminar which is mostly discussion based of what was taught in the lecture the previous week. However, I can see the benefit of having tutorials as sometimes it's very easy to be drowned out in the discussion when it can be such a large group size but super interesting video to watch really enjoyed it :)

its so weird how different unis do it different! mine does like no tutorials ever, we have a lecture and a seminar for each module every week; lecture goes first and we absorb info, then we have a seminar where we discuss the content and its sort of like a 15-20 person tutorial. some modules have supervisions (eg my work experience module) which are essentially regurgitating what youve done and the tutor tells you directions you can go next and shuts you down if youre going the wrong route. we have what our uni calls tutorials too which is one on one sessions the week before a deadline to check were on track but those are optional

    • @paigebrown7215
      @paigebrown7215 4 ปีที่แล้ว

This was interesting, I do history and politics and my uni does tutorials for politics and seminars for history but the amount of people is the same and the only difference is that seminars tend to have more lecturer talking! We have a seminar/tutorial for each module almost every week (every week in 1st year, and 7 weeks/12 in 2nd year)

Here in the US we dont really do seminars and tutorials. Im sure we have schools that do but I dont know about them. Depending on what course you take, you might have a lecture but you dont always have to.

I thought every uni was the same I guess I'm lucky (or not lmao bc the workload is stressful) we have 4 tutorials per term for modules that have lectures but a seminar/ tutorial hybrid for modules only taught by seminar. So far I've attended two unis and I thought that's how it's done everywhere

As a lecturer once told us "The first semester sucks" and it's kind of true. I mean you are experiencing so many new things and are also suddenly left on your own devices. In addition to that it is often loaden with Introduction which are quite often just a lot of information and not that interesting because they are meant to offer a wide overview. I can only tell you that it will get better. You will get to know new people, understand the system and you will get to choose more classes that are up your alley.

Chelsey Abbott I think I've figured it out. It reminds me of the large lecture classes I had at FSU that also had a smaller group meeting with one of the TAs. Of course, usually you didn't have any large lecture classes your last two years as you got into your major.

Works a little different at my uni (in Germany), too. And I am studying English-Speaking Cultures, which includes literature. Even though lectures and seminars are nearly as Jack described them, out tutorials are led by more advanced students and give us the opportunity to ask questions about the materials/theories/methods/... and discuss our own work, as you mentioned.

im from england at an england uni but ours is an arts uni so its interesing to hear the difference between ours and a more academic uni! Our course has about 30/40 people per year and our weekly lecture is an all years lecture, so about 100 people! our seminars are straight after, break up into groups of 15/20 and all you do is talk about the lecture you were just in. you dont need anything prepared. our tutorials we basically have like 4/6 people and we show our work to eachother and the tutor to get opinions and feedback! so interesting to hear what yours are like:)

It’s funny how different courses/uni’s have different styles of teaching. I am studying Occupational Therapy and we only have 36 people in our year so lectures are very intimate and class participation is expected. Workshops and seminars are even more intimate so there is typically half the class in a workshop and around 8-9 people in a seminar.

to be honest at my uni/on my course you can't really prep for seminars/aren't expected to unless specifically asked because they're often used to go over new work being set and that kind of thing instead of actual content! or they're spent learning practical skills with equipment that we can't outside of those sessions (i'm a psychology student so that's learning to do data analysis or how to measure brain activity etc.). certainly doesn't hurt to generally be up to date on work and readings though. we also don't have tutorials, not sure if that's an oxbridge/durham etc. thing only?

Summary of what Jack said in the video - copy and paste it to your notes on your phone or screenshot, so you can go back to it :)
    Advice on Preparing for Seminars
    - Do a general read of the text/s you are told to read, to get a feel for what they’re about etc.
    - Research the context of the time period in which the text/s were written - take some brief notes, which are clearly organised and easy to refer back to within the seminar
    - Research the author/s of the text/s that you are studying, again, take some notes to help guide your discussion in the seminar
    - Research any critical articles/ essays surrounding the text/s in question; a good way to do this is to use the library website and search the name of the text, author or something relevant. If the articles found are not useful, check their bibliographies for relevant articles that may support your reading. Add any useful quotes etc. to your notes and make a reference for the text, in case it is used in an essay later on (you could use the section in the back of the Jackademic planner for this!)
    - Once you have completed the notes surrounding the background of the text/s, return to the original text and re-read it. You now have a more informed understanding of the author and context - which may help piece together the answers to any questions you had before.
    - You can now also annotate and make additional notes on the text/s - this will allow you to understand your thinking should you return to the text in the future, but will also serve as a reminder during the seminar itself, and allow you to develop talking points and engage in discussion.
    Hope this helps x

it is weird to hear terms like a tutorial or seminar when you dont go to a British University. Here in the Netherlands we have two types of universities. One is the standard type of university and one is called a university of applied sciences where applied sciences can mean any subject. I went to latter one. And we had lectures and workshops plus consultancy hours and normal classes. The lectures where the ones done in a big lecture hall with 250 other students. Workshops were when you applied the knowledge from the lecture to your group work. A workshop is mostly 30 students and is much more interactive. The consultancy one is where you sat down with your project leader and discussed the progress of the group project. This was mainly held in second year and forth year. The normal classes where held in the first year and where focused on a subject like maths, statistics or law. In my second year we also got a guest lecture where someone from the sector would talk about his job or his area of expertise. This was lecture was mandatory as it was graded via a small essay.
In my second year, i had three sandwiches which is 1 contact hour of a lecture followed by the workshop of 100 min, ie 2 contact hours, and the a closing lecture of the same subject. So this was 4 contact hours on one day. This was done three days during the week. Then we had 2 contact hours for the guest lecture and 1 contact hour for the consultancy. So a good week was filled with 15 contact hours.
And i only prepared my lectures and workshops when needed by the professors and if i needed to pass.

I don't suppose you could do a video on how to find work experience for year 10?

i honestly wish i had the motivation to do this. i have 8 contact hours a week, with at least 2 readings to do for each module (got 4), plus whatever notes to take from the lectures, and after doing all of that i hardly have it in me to do even more research or readings though i know i should. wish i was a bit more organised cuz it sucks showing up to seminars with no extra knowledge than what is expected

Makes me feel bad for not being as productive. I’ve done no uni work today because I was focusing on my teacher training application!!
