    b) ending his career in Portland without a ring;
    c) winning a ring with another team
    d) ending his career with another team without a ring
    I'm guessing that, for Lillard, leaving Portland but not getting a ring anyway would feel awful, and that, even if he won a ring elsewhere, he would still have some regrets about not sticking it out in Portland.

  • @dneuens
    @dneuens ปีที่แล้ว +7

    This whole discussion reminds me of all the teams I've watched that came up short of winning it all. Each time there is a disappointment because you want to feel that exhilaration, you want the players you identify with to achieve the peak of the sport they've spent their entire lives playing. But then I feel gratitude. Sports are there for our entertainment and how lucky am I that I get to watch great athletes on great teams that bring you joy and entertain the hell out of you.
    So, yes, championships matter. I've been lucky enough to have the experience of watching my teams win it all, too, and I remember how that feels. It's awesome. But there are special seasons and special athletes that will always mean something deeper because they represented something bigger, even if they didn't win it all. Portland is lucky to have a guy like that in Dame. If he wins a chip in Portland, it will be fully deserved, but that guy is already and will forever be a champion in the hearts of the people who spent their hard earned dollars to watch him give them a show night after night.
    Lots of shitty players have won championships but will never be held in the same regard as great players who never won it all, but gave their city hope and pride while they played.

    - win regular season award.

    Making it to the NBA is something not to be sneezed at. It's so easy to get caught up in the nonsense of, 'you'll only be considered great if you win a ring'. Considering how many seats are at the table and how many people are trying to get one of those seats from all around the world, the fact you get one, even if it's a 10 day contract, indicates you are truly in that elite category. Winning a championship is obviously a goal but should not be the only goal. You have to learn to enjoy the process, even if that process means you do not win a championship. You have played at a standard that very few have been able to get to. This is a remarkable achievement that gets drowned out by talks of winning a championship.

    At some point you have to take your destiny into your own hands if the team won’t build around you or live with the consequences. Championships and being put in that top echelon just go hand in hand. As good as Barkley was nobody looks at him like a guy like David Robinson when he was arguably better and it’s all because of the ring. Same way that Dame who is practically as good as Steph if you take full account of their games will never be compared to him when it’s all said and done. Steph will be with Magic, Isaiah and those guys while Dame is with the Gary Paytons.

    Question: Is Damian Lillard a great? No sugar coating. Here is another way to look at it, if you are a book writer you just want to be noticed and have your book sold out, your intentions aren't set out to be the best writer but what you publish & share with the world to make a impact with your craft, & words that is what matters. So if you love the game okay just play and make a living but when you are obsessed, & you truly love the game championships are what you strive for.

    I have not heard anybody say Damian Lillard career isn’t successful because he hasn’t won an championship. He has multiple all star selections, All NBA Team selections. Made the 75th Anniversary Team. And will be elected into the Basketball Hall of Fame when he retires.
    It’s just the fact that a lot us know Dame wants to win an championship. But we don’t believe Portland’s owner and front office personnels will ever put the right players around Dame so that he can compete for an championship there in Portland.
    But if Dame wants to stay in Portland, we as NBA fans will have to respect his decision to stay in Portland though.

    The argument I have not yet heard, and maybe due to fear it would inevitably come off as disrespectful to some players, is why a ring measures success at the individual level when it's a TEAM accomplishment. Dame brings up context -- as in how you win the ring matters. But I just don't understand why the thing that everyone on a championship team wins, from the stars to the bench warmers, somehow signifies "success" for the stars on the team and at the same time non-success/failure for stars on all other teams.

    Can we just make it a standard you can “ring chase” if you did it the right way for 3 contracts. At 32+ you should be able to team up with another guy to put together a fair and legit contender. What kd and LeBron did is what ruined it. People talk about the 08 Celtics but those guys put their heart into their cities and we all wanted to see them compete at the highest level. None of them were at the level of kd or LeBron even at their best so it just felt right that they could put together 3 or 4 years of their remaining prime to go for a ring.
