Thanks man for the info on the plugs to buy I got my plugs changed. Shamefully it took 4 hours cause the back coil back on driver side would not line up with plug. Car runs alot better subaru had the gab on plugs little below .20 and it's a new car
Don’t use anti seize on ngk plugs. The lubricant from it could cause you to overtorque the plugs cause them to break and that’s a major issue. The treads on the plugs have a corrosion compound already.
slightly overtorqing the spark plug isn't going to break it or strip the threads. A little anti-sieze is not needed on NGK but it's not going to destroy your damn engine. Chill

About to do this over the holiday weekend and dug this up for a refresher. I think peeps that jack up the engine and other silliness are not aware of the socket disassembly and coil pack spin techniques. I had to figure out the spin one when I brute forced the packs in there and got wild misfires and blinking cels. That moment when you try to fix something and you make it 10 times worse. 😭 But, lots of people worried about spark plug part #'s. It's in your owner's manual. There are actually a few different ones that go in EJs. My 205 and 255 are different.
Its not nearly as bad as people make it out to be, you get a technique and a groove down after a while. The 2309 NGKs have always been a solid bet for me 🔥
Just a bit of a panic. Have you seen the wholes in the frame of the Subaru accent with tiny steel plates tack welded over them? Perfect in line with the spark plug holes. Was thinking about drilling those holes to make changing spark plugs easier. You could turn your wheel an access them with a long extension through the rim.
@@SuperMuddybuddy it's not a bad idea to do that, I would worry about the rails rusting after drilling into them though. I mean painting them would solve the rusting issue but I like the idea!

People be telling changing spark plug was hard on a EJ and I always thought it was hard until one day I tried it and wow it was not hard at all: just a couple of unscrews and that’s it . Well my car is a 06 sti
Just helped the roommie do his GR8 I believe it is. Apparently hes never done them and Ive never done it on my GRF. Before buying mine I heard about jacking the engine a bit however I think it was more with the GC and GD as the engine bay is smaller than the GR and the VA looks a bit more spacious than the GR. Took about 5 hours (including piping and accessories) mostly trying to find the hole and the air pressure of the coil kept wanting to pop off until we got the bolt in. 180 trick didnt work on the GR. Otherwise same process.
I want to take off my battery but idk cause I went somewhere and said if I just unhook the batterythe system will forget things but wouldn't it just relearn idle speed and stuff in a couple weeks of use anyways? They said I need to put a 12v charger in the obd port to keep the memory intact 🤷🏽♂️
I thought my 06 STI was a pain in the ass to change the plugs on. Then I bought a 2015 Ecoboost Ford Escape as my new daily driver, and was amazed at the plug removal process, and how annoying it is. At least on the Subie you don't have to remove the cowling, wipers, and other crap top reach the number 4 plug.
Hi Smeedia, I own an Impreza Model 2017 and wanted to replace the plugs, while was not able to find the Original => NGK DILKAR7B8, but somthing that should work => SILZKAR7B11. The only difference between them is in the Gap, the original is 0.032 while in the replacement it's 0.044. Does this matters? What are the implications for using the replacement? Thanks for the advice!
You make it all seem so easy. Can you please supply a list all the tools needed? In order to change coils, and spark plugs. Also thank you for this video.
There's a list in the video but 10mm 1/4 socket 1/4 Rachet Spark plug socket 3/8 rachet 2" extention Flat head screw driver 😁 Its not too bad once you get it going 🔥
Thank you for the vid. I'm noticing that alot of 14MM magnetic spark plug sockets on the market are 12pt while the hex on a 2017 WRX spark plug is 6pt. Are you using a 12pt or 6pt 14mm spark plug socket to remove/install the 6pt hex spark plugs? Thank you.
Hey Tanner, are these plugs good for a stock 21 sti, or should i just go oem from Subaru. It's crazy how much more expensive oem are than the 1 step colder.
Just did my spark plugs, took about a solid 2 hours to do, lost a 10mm in the process 😪. Also, my swivel spark plug socket definitely made things a whole lot easier.
Do the spark plugs you use for your STI work for the WRX as well? I have a 2017 and when I clicked the link the spark plugs it had said it didn’t fit but I’m assuming that is just on Amazon’s part haha.

Love your content bro, I have a 13 wrx & was curious if I can install the same exact spark plugs you did? Or are the NGK 2309s for the newer year models only?
Awesome✋ I put those in idles fine but I’m getting a pfffe code that doesn’t tell me what exactly is going on and all the lights come on and flash on the dash after cold start idle. Any thoughts what that could be?
I figured it out 🫢I installed a master brake cylinder brace same day as the spark plugs had to remove my Grimmspeed top mount intercooler to help with access and didn’t tighten the throttle body hose down all the way 🤦♂️
Don't ever put never cease on your spark plugs if you have to use that you're over tightening them you're going to end up stripping the threads out of the block
I was looking at replacing my spark plugs in my STI and was under my car. Have you ever looked at taking the plugs out from under the car it seemed that there was nothing in the way from the bottom of the car?
I’m about to be doing this tonight. I asked the dealership how much and they quoted me 980$ yeaahhh…no…I also have 60k miles on mine, will I potentially feel any performance change?
I do not, the only things that need to be removed are the battery, secondary air pump and intake, in the spark plug video I point out where the bolts are for the pump. The battery is just 2 10mm bolts to remove that one.
@@Smeedia just wondering in case my plugs are seized up because they haven't been changed for long, can I spray some penetrating spray into the chamber ?
Damn. Your engine looks so clean! I'm in Vermont, and dirt, salt, and dust get everywhere. Just royally effed up, and mistaked the cvt transmission plug as the oil plug. Fun, fun... Check engine light came on too, and it has one code, indicating "multiple misfires". Thinking spark plugs? I've been dreading the change, but found this video and now have some hope. WTF is up with Subaru tho? It's not very user friendly. I'm use to adding transmission fluid from the top, not these side plugs. And the location of the spark plugs?! Damn! They REALLY want you going back to the dealer, I guess...
Thr plugs aren't too bad once you've got a rythem down for them 🙏 Subaru use to have fill plugs up top but mived away from them around 2008 or so to the side fill 😮💨
What would be the recommended spark plug gap for a fully built sti with an fp blue turbo and full bolt ons? I can run e85 or pump but on pump gas I make 400whp and peak boost is like 20-22 psi
Are the spark plugs congruent to where they are on the WRX as well? Thx for your vids btw man, they’re very helpful and you’re pretty damn thorough about the topics you discuss.
What’s up man, love your videos. Just curious have you ever changed the gapping and if so, why? I know the NGK 2309 one step colder plugs are pre gapped at .032 but curious to know if some pro tune shops have there own gap specs.
Thank you! appreciate the feedback, trying to get some of those helpful techniques out there to hopefully save people money from having to pay someone else to do this for them!
I change mine every 15-20k but Subaru service manual states every 50K I believe, when you should change them depends on how yo uh drive the car and what all is done to it
What’s the best way to get a step by step on what to move out of the way beforehand and be able to do this on my WRX? It’s my first time working on this car and no one I know how’s to work on a car like this (fiancé won’t even touch it since it’s JDM) so I’m trying to figure out how to do everything properly so I don’t screw up my daily driver. 😬Some guidance would be awesome.
Not sure where you can find a step by step but you'll need to remove thr battery, intake and secondary air pump. Not too terrible. The air pump is 3 12mm bolts 🙏
I've been catching up on the blob eye build and the EG build, and I have to say I feel a little silly having gone the jack the engine up route. All I'm wondering now is what if any difference is there between this and a GD chassis frame rail? I remember doing my blob eye in 2008, but let's just say I was still learning how to use a wrench. I remember it being harder than you made it look.
So I replaced mine and have a slight misfire in cylinder 3. Took it out and checked it, looks fine so I put it back and I still have a misfire... Should I try the coilpack next?
Few years back I had one corroded to the head (also lived somewhere very humid) ive always used anti sieze with 0 issues. Ran it on my 630WHP among many others. but you are correct NGK says to not do it.
I know you own a brz but the technical instructions on the frs specify jacking the engine out of the cradle to which I definitely do. Haven’t done plugs on my wrx yet but I know on the frs I can’t physically get my bear claws for hands in the tight space haha
When i did them on the BRZ I had to jack up the engine, impossible to get them out otherwise from what I've tried 😅 thankfully on the STI I don't need to
Smeedia Well if there is enough space like on an outback I’ll be happy. I don’t work on Subaru’s very often, last time I did the connector retaining tab broke like on a Toyota and ended up falling out
Plugs and coil packs would be where u would start on that one. Swap in new plugs and swap the coil packs to see if the issue follows. If it does than it's just a coil pack if not you've got a bigger issue

13 wrx hatch cranks but doesn't start after putting plugs in. I got fuel and air. I torqued them to spec.. what could it be?
Coil packs plugged in?.👀
Thanks for the reply, seems like the maf pooped on me. It'll run when it's unplugged and not when plugged. Got one from subaru waiting on pick up.
Do I need to worry about pre gaping the spark plugs I buy from the dealership or are they good to go in the engine ?
Do the spark plugs you use for your STI work for the WRX as well? I have a 2017 and when I clicked the link the spark plugs it had said it didn’t fit but I’m assuming that is just on Amazon’s part haha.
Diffrent part number,

Love your content bro, I have a 13 wrx & was curious if I can install the same exact spark plugs you did? Or are the NGK 2309s for the newer year models only?
Yessir same same plugs 🤝
Awesome✋ I put those in idles fine but I’m getting a pfffe code that doesn’t tell me what exactly is going on and all the lights come on and flash on the dash after cold start idle. Any thoughts what that could be?
I figured it out 🫢I installed a master brake cylinder brace same day as the spark plugs had to remove my Grimmspeed top mount intercooler to help with access and didn’t tighten the throttle body hose down all the way 🤦♂️
Gap? Bought some NGK SILFR6A's, stock plugs, what ive read online says they should be gapped to 0.03, but they're at 0.025
Dumb question, but how much are you tightening them when you install? Thanks for the content, trying to maintain my 16 STi in Portland, OR
Once they're hand tight I go 90* past
@@Smeedia thanks! Looking to do my first spark plugs if you couldn’t tell 😅
I've tried from under the car and it's much worse 🙃 this method is the easiest way I have found it do it
I tried doing my Forester XT from above, but could not get to them and found I could only get to them from underneath.
signs u need new ones? my car doesnt have any lights on but the car feels a bit sluggish not sure if maybe its the spark plugs, car has like 28k miles
Would you recommend going 1 step colder plugs for daily drivers with standard FBO mods and tune?
I'm going to have to use ( get them comfy ) as my perfessional recommendation from now on 😅
Just gotta get em nice and comfy in there 😅🔥
Recommend these for a 18 STI stock turbo, just intake and downpipe?
I’m about to be doing this tonight. I asked the dealership how much and they quoted me 980$ yeaahhh…no…I also have 60k miles on mine, will I potentially feel any performance change?
thanks great video, can I ask about the coolant radiator in your car?
It was a mishimoto X line but i would highly suggest the Koyo 😁
@@Smeedia thanks bro
I know this is an older video but would yall still recommend these plugs or is their another ngk plug I should choose?
Do you have any videos showing how to remove the parts around the spark plugs?
I do not, the only things that need to be removed are the battery, secondary air pump and intake, in the spark plug video I point out where the bolts are for the pump. The battery is just 2 10mm bolts to remove that one.
Hey man great video. So to conclude there's no need for a torque wrench? Just finger tight and 1/2 turn should be good?
Just good N snug is 🤙 I've never torqued them 🔥
@@Smeedia just wondering in case my plugs are seized up because they haven't been changed for long, can I spray some penetrating spray into the chamber ?
Yes you can, I wouldent do a crazy amount though
It’s not to bad once you do it multiple times. Hardest part is having an extension to short or long and getting stuck on the strut tower 😂
Thr plugs aren't too bad once you've got a rythem down for them 🙏
Subaru use to have fill plugs up top but mived away from them around 2008 or so to the side fill 😮💨
Coil pack doesnt want to ge back in there after i change the sparks .? Any idea
Great video man!
Thank you 😁
Did you tighten the plugs to a certain torque value? I’ve never done spark plugs before and I definitely don’t wanna over torque lol
20lb/ft, but getting a torque wrench down there will be a challenge 😅
@@Smeedia Yehh I figured lol so you would recommend to finger tighten first then just make it snug? hopefully I wont over snug lol
@@marcn1777 that's what I do, shouldent have an issue but if you can somehow get a torque wrench down there then that would be ideal
I’ve been told “hand tight and then 1/4 turn.” Knock on wood that hasn’t failed me yet....
Thanks for the feedback and support! And yes they the same with the WRX 🙌
Are the spark plugs on an '17 impreza located in the same location as the WRX?
Yes it is the same 🙏
@@Smeedia thank you
Nice video bro, I look at this spark plugs Amazon and says it won’t fin on your car, any suggestions, drive a 2018 STI on stage 1+ thanks man
Same spark plugs 🤝
Ngk 2309s
@@Smeedia thanks bro 😎
Part # or replacement for ignition coil 2014 wrx
What’s up man, love your videos. Just curious have you ever changed the gapping and if so, why? I know the NGK 2309 one step colder plugs are pre gapped at .032 but curious to know if some pro tune shops have there own gap specs.
Sometimes, on high HP builds I'll gal them down to .028
@@Smeedia that’s what I thought. Thanks a lot man. 👍🏼👍🏼👊🏼
What about the vb would it be similar process?
Great video buddy really informative 😎👍
Thank you! appreciate the feedback, trying to get some of those helpful techniques out there to hopefully save people money from having to pay someone else to do this for them!
What do you figure is the best coil pack to run in 2012 WRX sti Hatchback? I Thank You for your video it made the job super simple.
Oem 🤝
Any video about timing belt? I have an 08 sti hatch. Thanks 🤙🏼
None yet but I've got it added to the question have to find a car that needs it done 😅
@@Smeedia You want to change the belt on mine? I'm in Washington too
😉
Can you run the 2309 plugs on a stock engine or should you stick to OEM plugs?
Could you tell me the size of the extension lol! That’s definitely not a 1 inch I got a 1 inch and it dosnt come out far enough
3" 🙏
@@Smeedia thank you 🙏🙏
On my EJ25 ratchet a wobble short extension and spark plug socket that’s all I use nothing else
How often should I change my spark plugs?
I change mine every 15-20k but Subaru service manual states every 50K I believe, when you should change them depends on how yo uh drive the car and what all is done to it
One caveat: If you’re about to get your car retuned most tuners suggest a fresh set of spark plugs
For a stock sti do you think 60k is fine for spark plugs or do 30 just in case??
I've been catching up on the blob eye build and the EG build, and I have to say I feel a little silly having gone the jack the engine up route. All I'm wondering now is what if any difference is there between this and a GD chassis frame rail? I remember doing my blob eye in 2008, but let's just say I was still learning how to use a wrench. I remember it being harder than you made it look.
Should be the same for a GD, GR or VA 🥳 my old 05 I did the same way 🔥
Do you recommend 1 step colder even if just moderately modified?
Yes, if your going to end up changing your plugs might as well go for the one step colders for a little extra security
Smeedia awesome 🤘 I really appreciate the reply and the info you put out in the videos.
Smeedia just followed on IG @tacticallyclassy
After pulling and replacing the battery did your multi function screen loose any setting ? Or was it only the clock and radio ?
Only the clock and radio 🙏
So I replaced mine and have a slight misfire in cylinder 3. Took it out and checked it, looks fine so I put it back and I still have a misfire... Should I try the coilpack next?
Move thr coilpack to a diffrent cylinder and see if the misfire follows 🙏
Pretty sure NGK says don’t use anti-seize but none the less it’s not to bad to do these I did mine yesterday.
When i did them on the BRZ I had to jack up the engine, impossible to get them out otherwise from what I've tried 😅 thankfully on the STI I don't need to
Smeedia
Well if there is enough space like on an outback I’ll be happy. I don’t work on Subaru’s very often, last time I did the connector retaining tab broke like on a Toyota and ended up falling out
I've seen that happen on older models farther frequently, hopefully does not happen to ya
Are those spark plugs good for stock power on the STI
I have a P0300 code and PFFFE code do you think that could be plugs...?
Plugs and coil packs would be where u would start on that one. Swap in new plugs and swap the coil packs to see if the issue follows. If it does than it's just a coil pack if not you've got a bigger issue
Smeedia ugh.. ok thanks Hoping it is just that where would be a good place to order both of those from
@@roberthollingshead1964 Here are the plugs amzn.to/2sHOjpD What year is your car? so I can get you the right coilpack number
